Coronation Street Episode Review; Weds 18th of April 2018 7.30pm

Welcome to Wednesday's edition of the Coronation Street Blog and the first of tonights two episode reviews.

Distraught at being caught in her recent tryst with Ali, Carla is frantically trying to contact Michelle.
Concerned with Michelle's sudden bruising (caused by Roberts steroid addiction), will Carla 'park' her relationship with Ali to seek her former best friends forgiveness?.

It's another quasi-incestuous 'family affair' no doubt, and we've quite a few of those on the street recently!

The Nazir/Habeeb/ Connor 'Ménage à trois' ( that's Moira's French influence), continues to cause more drama. 

With Rana and Kate looking to embark on a fresh start, can the return of Rana's mother and a sudden serious family illness, cause the star-crossed lovers further heartache?. Saira certainly causes Rana to ask fast and before you can say 'speed daal' a plane ticket to Pakistan is booked...

On the other side of Coronation Street, Eileen remains wallowing in self-pity, until Nicola pays her a visit. Trusting in Eileen's innocence, Nicola promises to keep a frail Eileen close to Phelan's grandchild's life. But as budding journo Daniel Osbournes case against Phelan builds, will it do more harm than good?.

Coronation Street Episode Review; Weds 4th of April 2018 7.30pm

Welcome to Wednesday's edition of the Coronation Street Blog and the first of tonights two episodes.

Clueless about Phelan's messiah-like recovery, an unsuspecting Eileen is still incarcerated in Weatherfield cop shop and facing further questioning.
Upon confirmation of Andy's dead body at the mill, Eileen realises that Andy was last seen alive on the day of her wedding.

The police now need to search Andys old flat, but with Craig facing self-imprisonment due to his burgeoning OCD, will this stop the police from entering?

Also facing a self-enforced prison (albeit metaphorical) is David Platt. His anguish following the sexual assault is now becoming hard to contain. Waking on the sofa, he continues to blow hot and cold with Shona, yet also subtly confides in Maria about a possible HIV test. Masquerading as Gary Windass, David visits the sexual health clinic but as he almost wittingly confesses the 'unprotected sex' to the nurse, he panics and flees.

Returning home, he finds Shona packing her bags. David again ferociously embraces her, before discarding her post-coital. He unconvincingly declares that he doesn't love her anymore and that they are through.

In the juxtaposition of Corrie's usual tradition, the more serious of tonights drama (Murder, OCD, SEX) sat nicely alongside Dev's new chip shop adventures, Rosie and Sophie's 'selfie gate',  plus Chezney dressed as a haddock (he's always been a wet fish - just ask Sinead). And over at the Rovers, Angie relishes her new accountancy role but Jude seems a bit fishy in his new marine biologist job?.As always, Mary's wonderful enthusiasm keeps this story ticking along nicely. But, Just WHATT is Jude thinking not letting Mary meet his new employers?.

Coronation Street Episode Review, Weds August 23

                                                                 

Welcome to another Wednesday Weatherfield Review. A short and sharp synopsis (with opinion) of all the latest goings on, down our favourite fictional street.

Tonight's episode begins with a policeman visiting Seb and looking for Phelan. An edgy looking Phelan sneaks snidely into Roy's Rolls, taking cover. Over at the Factory, Sinead is concerned that Chesney may have agoraphobia (not arachnophobia, Kirk!) after his recent attack and reluctance to leave the house. However, when pushed to leave the house, he decides to take 'the girls' out to town on the bus. Will his anxiety cause an accident? will he notice that Hope has a new head?.

Also heading on a trip is scratch card winner, Shona. It isn't to the viaduct shops though, it's a trip to Weatherfield Prison to see wayward son, Clayton. Upon hearing of his Mums windfall, he fancies a shot at an appeal. Will Shona's will weaken? it seems certain, until it's clear that Macca is involved then the facade falls flat. Back at The Rovers Return, David Platt overhears about the visit. The fine line between love and hate remains blurred, once again.
                                                                     

Another relationship that may cause division is the impending nuptials of BFFs Norris & Mary. The daunted duo have a spa/pub day with an oblivious Jude and a suspicious Angie. At the Spa, Angie pricks Mary's conscience about the lack of spark between her and Norris. I envisage Norris not as a tsunami, more a lacklustre but meaningful wave, in this peculiar 'romance'. Will they actually marry?.

A bemused Phelan finds out the PC plod is, in fact, Nicola's boyfriend, and she wants to build a youth centre for the corrie kids. They surely need it. I admire Nicola's philanthropy but is she a social worker or leader of the council?. She's only just got a mortgage for the flat that Phelan acquired for her. She must have won on a scratch card too?. Anyway, Phelan's surveying skills will prove useful (just avoid the cellar!).

On Chesney's trip into town, he has a crippling panic attack and darts off the Weatherfield wayfarer, leaving the girls on the bus. Luckily, the girls return home safe but the same can't be said for the anxious ex-kebab shop employee. As a search party gathers, it becomes clear that Chesney is still suffering from his recent Bistro stabbing and its a part Sam Aston plays extremely well. In desperation, Sinead frantically calls Chesney's mobile phone with news of the girl's return. The mobile phone rings loudly, whilst sat solely, next to a serene and deep looking Manchester canal.

Let's hope he's ok?.

I'm now off to search for a winning scratch card - I shall be back next week.

Coronation Street Episode Review Wednesday 16th of August 2017

Welcome to another Wednesday Weatherfield review. A short and sharp synopsis (with opinion) of all the latest goings on, down our favourite fictional street.

As tonight's episode opens, we are greeted with the rare sighting of Norris and Sean leaving No.3 together. Upon hearing about Norris's faux nuptials with Mary, Sean proposes that Norris gently discusses his misgivings. However, by the end of tonight's episode Norris is valiantly defending Mary's honour in The Rovers Return, will they marry?. OM triple G - I do hope so.

A Wedding I don't see happening, however, is Eva & Aidan's.
                                                                     

After tonights 'save the date' announcement (18th of Sept), Eva has delved deeper into her revenge plan on Aidan, roping a reluctant Maria into wedding planner mode, and infuriating Jenny Bradley; all at the same time. I can see this plot affecting many residents, and just what is Adam Barlow up to?.

Somebody that isn't up to anything (and really melted my heart tonight) is Gemma Winter. As Rita discovers the aftermath of the chav sweet raid, she quickly points the finger at Gemma and her 'pals'. £100 has also disappeared from her handbag  (the fruit machine win from Freddie, remains unspent). Rita informs Jenny of her suspicion, and an apologetically heartbroken Gemma retreats to 'Prima Doner' venting her upset about Rita, to Cathy. Having overheard Gemma's unintentional besmirch, 'Detective' Jenny Bradley (snooping around the street like a red-headed Sherlock) immediately informs Rita of the overheard misunderstood outburst.


Sadly, it's Rita who has misunderstood. Recently, she has become rather sanctimonious and self-righteous; or is it confusion?. Undoubtedly the matriarchal 'Queen' of the street, I feel this character changing confusion may be part of a forthcoming storyline?. Having completely disregarded Gemma's vulnerable and heartfelt plea of innocence, Rita Tanner calls the police.

This may be an upcoming downfall for our Rita (and Gemma, probably) but she's 'not ready for the knackers yard', just yet!. Spoken like a true Tanner, Rita (maybe Elsie, come to think of it).

Another 'phwoar-some' episode of Corrie, I'm now off to celebrate my birthday.

Coronation Street Episode Review - 26th July 2017

More mid-week musings from your Sheffield-based Corrie connoisseur.

As tonight's episode begins, Gemma is still mithering Chesney to push ahead with his compo claim for his stabbing. Although he recovered extremely quickly, Chesney is nonplussed, however a 'Compo-tastic' Gemma prunes him, and Adam Barlow (Baldwin!) ravishes over the potential compo cash.

Over at The Rovers Return, beardy Barlow is still driving taxis (whatever happened to Chloe?) and Toyah is reeling from another saddening IVF failure. I'm not emotionally bereft, just not emotionally attached to this storyline. With Baby Oliver moving in, it's obvious where this could be heading.

I am not at all convinced with this Bistro drama either but hey, I think this storyline may be warming up.

With the customers cancelling in droves, Robert reaches for the whiskey and begins to drown his sorrows. No sooner is he downing whiskey but soon drowning in debt, as £10k is demanded for our Ches by the scheming Barlow (he is a Baldwin, that lad). Compo-tastic! indeed - Robert flees the scene.

Melodrama at the Bistro wasn't my thing tonight but over at Summer's Grandma's house, we saw Corrie absolutely excels itself as Billy and Todd (aka 'Tilly') finally won her custody. It wasn't before the truth was finally revealed by Drew's father though, and the vile homophobe Geraldine, didn't go down without a fight. Awash with drama, raw nerves and a real acting tour de-force from Billy (Dan Brocklebank), these scenes were incredibly well acted and it seemed fitting. Considering 'Pride month' and the UK's 50th legislative  anniversary, Corrie is once again at the forefront 'flying the flag'; love it.

Back at The Rovers, both Battersby girls are behind the bar (I do like that) but Toyah's harrowing news has been revealed to an anguished Peter. Sad it may be, but I do wonder where the writers are going with this. I also miss Liz behind the bar, and don't get me started on Mad 'Medic' Moira.

As Summer is welcomed over at Tilly's (so proud of Corrie for this), the drama continues at the Bistro.

As Michelle is left alone, she hears a rumbling (cue sinister camera angles and nightmarish tension) 'Chelle discovers R.I.P is splattered in RED paint on the Bistro wall. OOOH! Looks like more drama for Michelle?

I think I'd avoid Nick's Bistro and The Rovers Return tonight, in all honesty. You can't get a pint anywhere, it's all doom and gloom.

That's it! I'm off to the 'Weatherfield Arms'. Speak next week.

Corrie Episode Summary for July 12

MID WEEK CORRIE BLOG REVIEW 12-7-17 
HAPPY HUMP DAY!

Hello and welcome to my first Coronation St ‘happy hump day’ review’.

I am Ryan Oxley, a CORRIE fan for over 20 years, an aficionado of the cobbles, a raconteur of all things ‘Rovers Return’ (I’m also a community RADIO DJ & father of one). It gives me immense pleasure (imagine a ‘Phelan’ smirk) to be joining Glenda and the team on the Coronation Street Blog!

Every Thursday or Friday I will give you an unmitigated synopsis including subtle opinion, good humour, and my unique thoughts on all the goings on down Weatherfield way.

At the start of this episode then, we are introduced to Peter's dashing beard and Liz in glasses as she prepares to sign over her beloved pub over to beardy Barlow. No golden watch for Liz though, as she receives a Peruvian ‘God of luck doll’ (or is it a troll) from Sean. It worked, as the troll, I mean Doll, later resides on the medical centre desk for the busy barmaids’ new receptionist job. The 'micro-economics' of Coronation Street, strike again!

Speaking of Liz, her old forgotten pal Erica is perplexed (as we all are) at Kev’s guilt-ridden rejection of the sultry corner-shop stunner, and his sudden admittance of guilt to Anna (no, me neither). 

Over at Weatherfied CID, young ‘Special Tinker’ is also perplexed and starts an investigation into ‘Victim Support’ cases, as his suspicions of Sgt Clifton are evident, his heinous treatment of Bethany is surely at an end?

Also acting out her own investigating is my favourite, Mary Taylor, as in amongst tonight’s serious drama, we have the unmissable comedy of  Mr & Mrs Cole? I do hope so, LOVE our Mary. Anna & Kevin meanwhile, propose a clean slate, a fresh start altogether. Although this isn’t before Anna shows a rarely seen clarity & insightful part of her nature. I was surprised and bemused at her enlightened discovery of Erica’s betrayal, although Dev’s ‘exciting’ plans for a trip to Jodrell Bank, were surely the giveaway. I mean, hardly a backstreet ‘grease monkey’, is he? (the earlier Kev / Erica innuendo plagued discussion was hilariously well written).

Meanwhile, as Craig makes a concerned call on Bethany, she finally breaks down and tells him the truth. I think Craig (a fantastic future PC 'Weatherfield' in the making) has already sussed Sgt Clifton out, just what will he do with this new information?

Sgt Clifton may well be about to feel the wrath of Craig, but Erica… you are busted!!.

Once again Lucy Fallon purveys such powerful emotion and as an actress, conveys a maturity that is well beyond her young years. An astounding performance.

A happy ‘Hump Day’ Corrie from me. Same time next week?
