Coronation Street Episode Review Friday 4 September

Evening Corrie fans, it’s Kelly here with your Friday night review.

We return to Alya threatening Geoff with a broken bottle. Her arm must be sore, she’s been holding that since Wednesday night. Tim talks her into putting the bottle down while his dad continues to act innocent, claiming he has no idea what would have set her off. When Ryan arrives to take the shaken Alya away, Tim starts to doubt Geoff’s version of events.

Back at the flat Alya cries to Ryan that Geoff is winning and he tells her some bad news of his own… Ali has got four months in jail. Remember Ali? It took me a few minutes I’ll admit. It’s a shame he’s ended up in jail when he started off so promisingly. Still, look on the bright side, maybe they’ll give him a sensible haircut while he’s in there. I for one am convinced that, like a reverse Samson, it all went wrong for him when he let his hair go straggly. I mean look at the state of it!

Meanwhile Daniel confesses to Adam that he’s been paying Nicky to listen to him talk about Bertie while wearing his dead wife’s clothes. When Adam looks understandably weirded out by this, Daniel says that they genuinely like each other’s company and are just friends. Adam checks the fridge quickly for severed heads before pointing out that Nicky is only doing this because she’s getting paid. On the Street he conveniently bumps into the woman herself. He tells her to drop the tart with the heart routine and leave Daniel alone to grieve. She tells him to make it worth her while. We see him reaching for his wallet, but did he actually pay her off? I can’t imagine this is the last we’ll see of Nicky.

In other news, David patiently explains to Shona why she can’t take her clothes off in public; Sean continues to worry about Todd, despite not mentioning him for three years and Cathy has a go at Dev because he’s cut her hours at the kebab shop and she needs the job. This was a storyline that confused me. Back when we first met Cathy, she owned her own house (albeit this was when she was a hoarder so it was stuffed to the rafters with old shopping baskets and broken lampshades). Also, don’t her and Brian own the Kabin? Give Dev at break love, you’re hardly on the poverty line.

Back at No. 4 Tim nice but dim is still puzzling over what happened with Alya. He lets slip to Sally about Geoff’s camera, but when she looks aghast he repeats his dad’s lies that he had it installed as a security measure, but Sally’s not fooled. She tells Tim it’s manipulative and creepy and that he can’t see what’s right in front of him. But Tim digs his heels in and tells her he won’t cut his dad out of his life. Not for her not for anybody.

And that’s all for this week. I feel like Sally Marple is very close to cracking this case. If you’d like to start a petition to make her Chief of Weatherfield police, let me know in the comments or on twitter @mskelstar.

Coronation Street Episode Review Friday 21 August

Evening Corrie fans, it’s Kelly here with your Friday night review.

Abi is being taken away in an ambulance with good Samaritan Peter by her side. When she wakes up after having an operation on her shoulder, Seb tells her that the twins have already gone to Australia but that he understands why she gave them up and thinks they will have a better life. He’s changed his tune. He’s been moping around telling her she’s a terrible mother for months. Still, maybe he’ll cheer up now. Oh no I forgot, he’s still got Alina to sulk over. Give me strength!

Meanwhile at Victoria Gardens, Mary, Billy and Sean are on a stakeout, hoping the errant Todd will be lured by the bag of money they’ve left as bait. When a random girl turns to collect the money I did for a moment think I know they’re replacing Todd with a new actor but this has gone a bit far. But as it turns out she's just a chancer who says she found Todd’s phone by the canal. The man himself remains mysteriously absent.

Over at No. 8  Adam is collecting his stuff. Sarah begs him to forgive her but he says they’re over unless she changes her mind about protecting Gary. Needing a bit of moral support, our favourite Scot asks Daniel to go for a few beers with him but Dan turns him down claiming he’s got someone coming round to do an energy survey. That someone turns out, predictably, to be Nicky, who has apparently taken two buses to get there. I’m no expert on what your average escort earns, but I'd have thought she could have stretched to an Uber.

Norman Bates, sorry Daniel has made her dinner and insists she wears his dead wife’s cardigan again. When she tells him she needs to go, he offers to pay her double. What the...? Where is this money coming from? Has Daniel sold a kidney on the quiet? Come to think of it, we haven’t seen Bertie in a while. Has the poor kid been sent to work up a chimney to pay for his dad's cardigan habit? Nicky wisely refuses the offer, (probably terrified he’s going to make her do Sinead’s voice), and tells him that she’s booked up for the rest of the week and he really needs to talk to his family. Yes, either that or a really world-class psychiatrist.

In other news Paul tells Bernie and Cathy that he’s worried about Gemma being depressed again. Gemma assures them she’s not, she just didn’t want Paul to find out about the surprise birthday party she’s organising for him.

Back at the hospital Abi is in physical pain and emotional distress over the twins. When the doctor gets distracted by another patient, she takes the opportunity to steal some morphine from a medical trolley. She’s caught by Peter who tells her to put it back, but doesn’t shop her to Kev or Seb. Ooh Mr Barlow you are very protective. Could there still be a spark between these two?

And that's all for this week. But if anyone knows how Abi manages to maintain such a perfect manicure while fixing cars all day please do let me know in the comments page or on twitter @mskelstar.

Coronation Street Episode Review Friday 24 July

Evening Corrie fans, it’s Kelly here with your Friday night review.

It’s the day of Yasmeen’s trial and she is having some kind of weird dream sequence involving multiple Geoff clones imprisoning her in a box. The trial seems to have come around very quickly doesn’t it? How on earth have her legal team had time to gather all their evidence and find relevant witnesses? Oh wait, they haven’t, as Yasmeen’s revelation to Imran about Geoff having another abused ex-partner comes completely out of the blue. I’m not really sure what Yas is paying these guys for? All they seem to have done so far is found Sally and Eileen, who both sort of think that maybe Geoff is ‘a bit off’. It’s hardly a cast-iron defence is it!

Meanwhile at No. 4 Tim is worried about being grilled by Posh Paula and his horrible father is determined that Yasmeen is going to pay. As they leave for court in a taxi, they’re watched by Elaine. Do we think she’s really Tim’s estranged mum, Tessa? I hope so. But mainly because I’d like some mother-in-law scenes between her and Sally.

It all comes to nothing though, as before she’s even left prison, Yasmeen collapses and is rushed to hospital with a heart attack. This makes for a very weird scene where instead of helping her, Imran just points at her from a 2m distance. And this my friends, is how we know that *dramatic music* coronavirus has finally arrived on the Street.

Once it’s out there every single character mentions it. There’s social distancing in the Kabin, disinfecting in the Rovers, hand sanitiser everywhere and Nina talking about goats taking over a deserted Llandudno. Which to be fair was a very funny story, even if it did happen back in March.

In other news, Sarah walks into Adam’s office to find Laura in there flirting outrageously with her husband. Laura is momentarily shocked to find out he’s married before telling him to dump Sarah and give her a call. She’s classy. When Adam tells Sarah that Laura is Rick’s wife and that he suspects Gary of murder, his furious wife tells him that his obsession with Gary is killing them.

Meanwhile the object of his obsession is having terrible day. In the Kabin, Gary finds Brian practising with a metal detector which he plans to take to Beacon Woods, aka Rick’s shallow grave, where a horde of Roman coins have just been discovered. Gary persuades him not to go but he’s later talked back into it by Bernie who says she saw Gary putting a shovel in his boot and that he’s after the treasure for himself. What follows is an odd post-Covid scene where, in lieu of any scenes actually being filmed, Brian and Bernie spend five minutes explaining that they were in the woods detectoring when Gary threatened and chased them. To prove the point the man himself then arrives and smashes Brian’s metal detector (from a safe distance). As the row abates, Bernie returns to her house and takes a watch out of her pocket with the inscription ‘To Rick from Laura’. It looks like the game may be up for the Ginger Gangster.

And that’s all for this week. I hope the multiple Geoff’s don’t give you nightmares. Sleep well Corrie fans…or if you need talking down catch me on twitter @mskelstar

Coronation Street Episode Review Friday 26 June

Evening Corrie fans, it’s Kelly here with your Friday night review.

In a parallel universe where teenagers still take exams and it’s possible to book holidays, Amy is stressing about her upcoming RE exam so Steve offers to take them all on a family holiday to Cornwall. Unfortunately, Amy lets this slip to Leanne, who of course gets into a massive strop, because that’s her default setting.

Meanwhile Seb the Incredible Sulk is still sniffing around human chipmunk Alina and making lovely Emma feel uncomfortable. I honestly can’t think of a couple I care less about than Seb and Alina. Oh no wait I can…Fiz and Tyrone. Their latest storyline seems to be Fiz worrying that they’re middle aged and have no fun. I’m not really sure why this has suddenly become a thing? Fiz hasn’t been fun since 2002 and Tyrone is so dull that his missus turned to Kevin Webster for a bit of excitement, a man whose only topics of conversation are pies and spark plugs.

Over at the café, Shona has a coffee with Gemma who she has no memory of, despite them being from the same estate. Gemma tells her how good she and David were together, so Shona decides to order him to the café flat for a ‘date’. Once she’s got her bemused husband there, she gives him a beer, and starts taking her clothes off. That’s the second person she’s made a pass at in two days. I don’t know about you lot, but I had no idea that a brain injury turned you into a sex-maniac. Now that I’ve got all the facts, I’ve precariously balanced a few heavy jars in the kitchen and sent Mr Kelstar out to do the washing-up. Anyways, David turns down Shona’s offer of a bunk-up and she takes this pretty badly and throws him out. When she moans to Roy about it all he wisely tells her that it might be a better idea to take things slowly.

Also in the cafe, Nina, Toyah and Evelyn set off to lobby their local MP (I missed what they were lobbying for/against). After a successful and arrest-free protest, Toyah rushes off to join Imran for a mysterious meeting. It’s with a social worker to discuss her and Imran becoming foster parents. I’m all for this, firstly because I like these two and secondly because now they’ll surely have to move out of the Tardis which they currently share with Alya, Ryan, Craig, Lord Lucan and the Bolshoi Ballet, and get a home for grown-ups.

Finally, Leanne and Steve take Oliver to the hospital for his test results. Leanne is feeling positive, convinced that Oliver is showing signs of improvement and even manages to grudgingly concede that someone buying you a holiday might be quite a nice gesture. I’ve a feeling this won’t last for long though, as judging by the look on the consultant’s face Oliver’s prognosis is not good.
But we’ll have to wait until Monday to find out…

And that's it for tonight folks. Are you missing a bit of drama or did you like the slightly slower pace? Let me know in the comments or on twitter @mskelstar
