Channique Sterling-Brown: “Dee-Dee’s World Will Come Crashing Down!”

Our latest Coronation Street Blog Cast Chat is with my favourite Bailey* Dee-Dee, as actress Channique Sterling-Brown tells the blog all about the proposal, working with Roy Cropper, and what comes next for the feisty lawyer?

Hi Channique! 

How has Dee-Dee been feeling about the proposal? 

“She’s head-over-heels for the guy, and for her, she sees him as someone who supports her protects her, and sees her as an equal. He supported her through her Dad’s gambling and with death threats. It's nice for her to have someone as safe and he represents that"

What has the general public's reaction been like? 

“It's been brilliant, people are so invested in it, and it's exciting! Some people have been quite disappointed as he’s turned out to be a baddie!” 

How has it been working with Calum? 

“We get on really well and have such a good laugh! I think it's good as it means we are open to playing and trying new things. When we filmed the proposal in the flat (studio set) we were filming for 12 hours straight, just us two. You have to bash it out, so it's great to be in that environment with someone who you can trust”

Away from that story - You’ve worked with a lot of other actors as Roy’s solicitor? 

“Playing across from David (Neilson, Roy Cropper) has been brilliant, he’s incredible! I’m (Dee-Dee) also everyone's lawyer so I get to work with loads of cast. I love it - it's a real privilege seeing what everyone does! I've been in the funeral parlour, the garage - it's just amazing”

Dee-Dee’s also been helping Bethany solve who’s been using her credit card. Have they considered that it might be Lauren? 

“I don't think that crosses anyone's mind at this point. We think she's dead and she’s seen no sign of anything from Joel -she’s not reconciled the two situations. In the coming weeks, we will see that change. She’s got her rose-tinted glasses on (when it comes to Joel) but she’s also a smart woman and we will see Joel come under pressure.” 

Are you looking forward to filming scenes where Dee-Dee finds out about Joel’s secrets? 

“Yes, it's exciting. But I do feel sad. Her world is going to come crashing down, but it has to. What’s in the dark must come to the light. I’m also looking forward to the aftermath of it. I think, for Dee-Dee, we are going to see different sides of her. We know she's feisty and strong, but I think there will be an element of vulnerability. I am excited to film that and flesh the character out more”

Coronation Street Episode Review, Wednesday 13th September, 8 pm

Welcome to another Wednesday Weatherfield round-up and to catch up on the latest Coronation Street drama. 

Following Monday night's escape, Stu realises that Eliza has done a runner, and panics, using Alya as a conduit while Yasmeen is away. When he gets a call from the school, he realises his grandaughter is at her Dad's flat. Suspecting that Dom has arranged all this, Stu calls out a social worker (and the police) who decide the youngster is best off with her Dad for another night. Stu overreacts, telling Dom he won't be giving him a penny, before getting arrested for assaulting the policeman. 

Later, he meets Dee-dee at the cop shop and tells her what has happened. Watching the drama progress, I wondered if this could be the start of a custody battle. Surely not, because we have already had Stu go through a lengthy court battle over his wrongful jailing, a case which Dee-dee and Alya won for him! Out of the cop shop, Stu drowns his sorrows in the pub and sings songs before being taken away by Alya and Dee-dee. He wakes up from a booze-fuelled nap and tells Alyla his plan to fight for Eliza with a (drumroll) custody battle! Great stuff - I can hardly wait. 

Meanwhile, Aadi Alahan is also in the thick of it tonight as his affair with Courtney becomes exposed at the business dinner celebration. Before the dinner date, Dev’s been probing Aadi about his love life, thinking he's dating Amy Barlow. Aadi lies and tells his Dad that he does have a new girlfriend, but is too embarrassed to introduce her to the family. As the dinner progresses (it's great to see this storyline cast ensemble together) Amy makes light of Aadi’s new girlfriend (knowing his secret) whilst doing her best Tracy Barlow impression. As the young lad gets embarrassed and Courtney plays along, he decides to get some air. Courtney follows him and embraces Aadi in the doorway, just in time for Dev to catch them in the clinch! Dev is understandably furious but promises to keep quiet to save the deal. Back at the table, the atmosphere shifts as Darren and Courtney argue. Darren loudly accuses Courtney of cheating, and Dev struggles to hide his dismay. Courtney admits to an affair and tells her husband that her beau is ‘'hiding in plain sight’' As drinks flow, Darren gets ever more drunk, and what with Bernie’s jealousy of him greasing up his business partner's wife, it isn't long before Dev gets accused of cheating! Darren throws a punch but stops as Aadi admits the truth. I think we can assume the shop deal is off!

Elsewhere - Roy and Evelyn’s septuagenarian living arrangements offer light comedic relief to tonight's proceedings. The cafe boss is known for his eccentricities, and what with Evelyn’s trademark caustic humour, these two are an absolute delight! 

Also tonight, Dee-dee rebuffs advances from Joel and dithers about her love life, consulting Alya, Adam, and Michael. Paul seeks health advice from Shelly, but her condition is rapidly declining. Cassie helps Tyrone with the girls, but Hope takes advantage.

Coronation Street Episode Review, Wednesday 3rd May, 8 pm

Welcome to another Wednesday Weatherfield round-up and to catch up on the latest goings on, on Coronation Street. It’s the start of a new month, and having done two Corrie press days in two weeks, I can promise that this is a good one - a lot is coming up!

Tonight starts where Monday left off. Paul’s perilous health situation (he’s not telling anybody because more drama is promised) remains hidden from his family, but Dee-dee is trying to use his diagnosis as a mitigating circumstance in court! However, what with being penniless and with Gemma’s wedding coming up, Paul is soon pushed to make another criminal decision with a car theft for Nile. Unluckily, he’s caught in the act by Dee-dee who refuses to turn a blind eye, so Paul decides not to steal it after all. Rather than facing the cops, the lawyer gives him another grilling and tells him to reveal Nile and the car-stealing racket to the cops. Paul then heads over to see Damon in the hope of blackmailing money out of him to cover up for the car ring.  

Brian and George’s new friendship based on model-building pulls us back into Corrie's territory of old, it’s twee, it’s unassuming, and kinda like when Sam and Roy play chess together - I love it. I'm hoping Roy gets invited into this group. Tonight, Brian is looking into entering a competition, with George as his right-hand man. Things soon turn sour though, when one of the small parts goes missing! 

Meanwhile, this Bistro licensing storyline is pulling all kinds of residents together, and in the middle of it, we have Damon and Sarah's fatal attraction. Women do love a bad boy I guess, and no more so than on this street. It's Adam’s birthday tonight and Sarah is playing happy families until Adam gets wind of some local opposition to the late-night licence intricacies. Damon is soon on the scene, and muscles in on the couple's birthday drink - a menage a trois, indeed. Maria then heads into the Bistro and tells Sarah she's not the only one to have objected - right in the earshot of Nick. Adam is fuming, Damon plays dumb, and Sarah struggles to make amends with her husband, who shows a rare glimpse of Mike Baldwin's DNA when he decides to get stuck into his business dealings instead. I liked that. He tells Nick to go on a charm offensive to win residents over. Outside the factory, Sarah warns Damon off.

Elsewhere in the Platt/Barlow/Metcalfe family drama, Stephen moves his Las Vegas wedding plans forward and starts to make use of Elaine’s (never before mentioned) illness. Tim and Audrey’s benevolence towards the couple only seems to help his cause -Tim’s got his card marked. Audrey's shock is cooled by Elaine’s temperament and she’s soon in tears. It was a surprising unleash of emotion, and tonight's top scene for me! Later on, Elaine tells Stephen that she wants a Weatherfield wedding instead.  

In other news, Aaron moves off the street, Amy looks to restart uni life, and Jenny’s hooked up with Owen.
