Coronation Street Episode Review; Weds 13th Nov 8.30 pm

At Richard's bedside (a lot of bedside's tonight) Roy admits that he's his half-brother and they share the same Mother in Sylia. Shocked, Richard (Malcolm from WATCHING) reveals to Roy that he'd known since childhood, but didn't know his Father as he was sadly adopted. If I'm honest, I think its a pity Wayne isn't here to see this, but some superb acting, and it's awesome to see David Neilson tackling something gritty.

Confiding in Nina, Carla is quick to sing Roy's praises to his new niece. Like I said in tonight's first review, she's 100% Carla again, with added vulnerability-I love it.

Family ties are also on Steve's mind, he's taking the girls out of the flat, with Tim, to a Weatherfield County game. After the game, Amy decides its time Steve took her to see 'Little Mix' in concert. It's great to see the girls annoying Steve, isn't it? I wonder where this is heading.

Banishing Vicky to her maternity appointment, Robert is quick to cover his tracks, with Michelle heading back to bedside base. Using Ali as a ruse, Robert tells Michelle that her Doctor son is harbouring a drug addiction. How low with this guy go? Michelle is shocked and swiftly leaves the hospital. Back at the Bistro, Ali tells his Mum the truth but also airs his suspicion about Robert's timing of this announcement. Michelle agrees and seeks confrontation with her fiance.

With Michelle soon heading back to the hospital, Vicky leaves, and Robert has the same idea, deciding to discharge himself and hoping to avoid a Michelle / Vicky clash. Too little too late though, as out of his earshot, a nurse tells Michelle that Robert has had another female visitor. Back home, Michelle announces she's heading out to a meeting, and Robert is soon on the phone to Vicky. Searching 'paternity rights' on his laptop, has Robert had a change of heart... again?

Meeting with Carla, Michelle asks Carla to cover a few more  Bistro shifts and confides in her about Roberts recent (months!!) suspicious activity and shows concern.

Can Carla help Michelle, and finally get her comeuppance on Robert?. If you remember, the night before the factory roof collapse, he gave Carla a serious threat-so let's hope so. I wouldn't want to cross Carla, Michelle, AND Vicky, Would you?

Hospitalisation Street and the Weatherfield Ward of Doom

Last night on Coronation Street, young Seb took a tumble from his window cleaning ladder and fell to the cobbles. Fortunately the ambulance wasn't stuck in roadworks on the ringroad and got him to th'ospickle safe and sound.  Where he's going to find out next week that he's got HIV.

Ah, the joys of Coronation Street and hospital life. 

Now then, as much as I enjoy a bit of hospital drama along with the best of them, I'm getting a bit fed up of seeing the inside of Weatherfield General.

Last week in Corrie we had not one, not even two, but three hospital scenes, all with different characters involved.

There was the storyline about Summer smoking the Spice cigarette.

There was the storyline about Chesney doing a runner from the ward after being told about Katy dying.

And there was baby George taken ill and the whole Appleton clan at the hospital too.

That's three hospital storylines in one week. Three.

And things don't look as if they're about to ease off.

We're still to find out what Rita's biopsy results are and that'll unfold next week too.  Maybe Rita can pop in on Seb and say hello while she's there?

When Kate Oates was first announced as the new Corrie producer I asked Emmerdale fans on Digital Spy what we could expect from her in Coronation Street.

Their response?

Loads of hospital scenes. 

I thought they were kidding too.

Something To Talk About

My Grandma Margaret is not very well. She’s been stuck in a hospital bed for weeks and I visited her over Christmas. She’s in a private room with a small window which looks out onto a brick wall. Not the nicest place to spend the festive season.

We chatted about Grandma’s recovery, what I’d been up to down in London and what my sister’s kids got for Christmas. In particular the drum kit that Santa so kindly delivered to my nephew Joshua, to the delight of the neighbours. Grandma appreciated the company, and we talked for a while but sometimes you just run out of stories to tell and things to talk about. So I chirped up:

“David’s finally thrown Kylie out.”

Grandma already knew. Perched high on a wall in the corner of my Grandma’s hospital room is a small TV and her only real window to the outside world. That window is firmly fixed on Weatherfield. Coronation Street has been a firm fixture in so many people’s living rooms for generations. A constant look at other people’s imaginary lives which provides a talking point, an escape from real life for half an hour – or an hour sometimes if we’re lucky. My first memory of Coronation Street must have been in the late 1980’s when I was a toddler. My Aunty Jean would always announce “Mother, the Street’s on!” and her tiny, white haired old mum would shuffle in and take her seat. Since then, for some reason, Coronation Street has been a constant in my life. It seemed like EVERYBODY watched it.

Grandma has also been a constant in our lives. My sister and I used to get so excited on a Wednesday afternoon as school finished, as it was the day we went to Grandma and Grandad’s for tea. I remember watching Blue Peter, Newsround and, of course, Corrie. I’m, ahem, 30 years old now, and me and my Grandma still have this shared interest. And my safety net for when I run out of things to talk about.

Oh, and look what I discovered right outside the door of her hospital room…

Perfect.
