Clayton - the Corrie loose end who needs to be killed off

I don't know about you, but I'll be glad when Clayton's dead and buried and this whole siege and hostage storyline is over.

I mean, he is going to be killed off, isn't he? Please?

I reckon he has to die because he's a loose end that needs to be tied up.  Having Shona's son be the killer of David's first wife was a master stroke on Corrie. How could Shona and David ever survive? They'd always, always, have killer Clayton hanging over them. And no matter how many times they said they loved each other, and played happy families, you just knew that somewhere in the background, the hurt and pain caused by Kylie's death would never go away.  There would be a part of David that would always blame Shona.

But if Clayton dies? They're good to go. Start all over again, and as David himself said this week, he's even thinking of proposing to Shona. But that's another blog post for another time (i.e. tomorrow!).

I have no idea if or when Clayton dies, but I'm sure he's going to have to. And I'd like it to be David who does it. Let's say Clayton's in the hospital hooked up to a life support machine and David's sitting at Clayton's bedside with a menacing look on his face, threatening to unplug the machine. Except he doesn't. What does happen is that Lily or Harry or Max stumble into the room looking for David, and in the chaos that ensues, the machine is unplugged... but by whom?

It won't matter. Clayton will be a gonner and the loose end that's been hanging for years over Shona and David is all neatly tied up and they can move on. And so can us fans too.

Coronation Street Episode Review; Friday 1 March 2019

Tracy and Steve have adjusted to Amy's decision to have an abortion but no-one has let Amy or Tyler know and so when the two ex-grandparents (Tracy and Vicky) meet in the Street there is a hair snatching cat fight.  Tyler pulls them apart and Tracy responds to Vicky saying "This isn't over!" as we see above.  Later Tracy and Steve tell Robert and Michelle that the continued employment of Tyler in the Bistro means that the Tyler family keep appearing on the Street and it would be better for Amy if the annoyance was removed.  Eventually Robert and Michelle agree and Tyler loses his job.

Seb is desperate for a job and Eileen knows that StreetCars needs a cleaner for the cabs as the previous one has been dismissed following an unsavoury discovery.  Eileen talks Steve into giving Seb the job and he shakes hands with Seb.  As Eileen arrives with Seb to start work they find Abi cleaning the cabs under the instructions of Tim who refuses to back down from giving her the job and refuses to discuss it with Steve.  Abi later attempts to put things right - visiting Seb above - to tell him to take the job.  Seb is having none of it and his life continues to unravel.  Eileen tells Seb he is being childish - but she cannot get through to him either.

Daniel's mind is not entirely on his MA at present and his essay was poorly regarded by his supervisor apart from glimpses of something original in the summary written by Brian.  Ken has trouble accepting that Brian may be better educated than he is and and insists on getting involved in the rewrite of Daniel's essay on Poe - giving his thoughts (above) on a section of the essay as actually written by Brian.  Daniel and Sinead sneak off for a drink and leave the two of them to score points of each other as Brian brings up Ken's recent literary contribution to the local paper! 

Claudia is with Ken for much of this episode.  When Steve backs out of buying the house on Victoria Street, Claudia takes too long deciding to make an offer and fails to secure it.  However magically there is a "Redbank" development somewhere close by and Claudia has decided to buy a flat there and she claims she will be a neighbour to Maria (whom I thought was still in the flat above the salon).  There is a lot of talk about the impending siting of a bail hostel and we are told it will be opposite the house on Victoria Street.  If true it will be located where the long closed gym entrance was to be found and was fenced off when I visited the set in September.

Much of the single hour long episode is dedicated to Shona and Clayton, her murderous son.  Clayton is holed up in a disused factory where he was taken by Shona.  He has a very small mobile phone and wants money.  For some reason Gary is insisting on being paid in cash for the work on barber shop so Nick and David get £2.5k in cash from the bank and until they can pay Gary they put in David's jar which holds his epilepsy drugs that no-one else is allowed to touch and is out reach of children.  Shona overhears Nick and David discussing where to hide the stash and once they are gone she liberates the money.  Later when it cannot be found David first accuses Gail of wanting to go on a cruise and then thinks that Sarah has found it.  The penny eventually drops that Shona must have taken it - which she did - along with some sandwiches for her far from appreciative son.  She has phoned the police saying Clayton was going to hand himself in and needs to keep him from doing a runner before they arrive outside the abandoned property.  Clayton has other ideas (even the negotiator considers him to be volatile) and Clayton starts waving a knife around and declares to the police negotiator that he is holding Shona as a hostage - they have to give him a car, £10k and they must let him leave unmolested or Shona dies.

I think we all knew that at some point Clayton would be back to upset the peaceful existence of Shona and David - was this what we expected or even wanted?  Given that Clayton has already murdered one of David's partners I doubt that Shona will end up dead - lightning striking twice seems unlikely.

Personal view is that I hope Tyler losing his job is not the end of Vicky causing mayhem - Tyler last year was a nasty piece of work and the 2019 version has been very different.  But Vicky - now there is a force of nature.

I think Brian deserves an award for hiding his intelligence over so many years.

Callum Harrison: "Everybody likes a bad boy, don't they?"

There's a good interview with Callum Harrison, who plays Clayton Hibbs in this week's Inside Soap magazine.

He says he was only supposed to be in Coronation Street for seven episodes so being back for Clayton's current storyline means a lot to him. 

He talks about filming the upcoming hostage scenes when Clayton takes his mum Shona hostage. 

"It was such a good experience, being on location. It was very surreal at he time because we were filming in this derelict building and it really helped. It wasn't a nice place, so it was easier to get into the scenario. I loved it."

And he also says he loves playing the bad boy on Corrie.

"I really enjoy bad guy roles! I'll take any part that comes my way as every little helps, but if I had the choice, it would definitely be to portray a bad guy, as there are so many places you can take the character.  They're just interesting to play, and are just better because everyone likes a bad boy, don't they?"

Coronation Street Episode Review; Weds 13th Feb 7.30pm

Welcome to Wednesday's edition of the Coronation Street Blog, and the first of tonight's two episodes-reviewed in a handy blog post.

Abbie and Carla reconcile after their recent argument, but you wonder how much trouble a boat can cause?.

Meanwhile, Abi is excited to be heading to Kefalonia with Captain Barlow. With Simon off of school, he's keen to help his dad on the boat, although Peter hasn't told his son about his trip with Abi until Carla tells subtly fills him in. Confronting his father in Roy's, Simon tells Peter that Abi means nothing to him, unluckily in earshot of Seb.

Later, paying her son a visit to tell him the news, Seb obviously can't wait to chastise his mother again and reveals Peters true feelings.

As David questions Shona's recent sneaky discussions with Nick, Clayton receives a beating for his Mums failed drug deal. Beaten to a pulp, Shona is called to the hospital. At the shop, David quizzes his brother and smashes a mirror in frustration. Over at Weatherfield General, Clayton is relatively unscathed but can Shona escape her sons latest drug dealing violence?.

Roy's coffee addiction is causing concern for Carla as his sleep deprivation and parasomnia put Alex in near danger, who's back working behind the counter.

Failing customer confidentiality, Alex is keen to tell Mary all of the latest gossip, and Mary is fitting perfectly into her new role as Ruby's new childminder. Tyrone is pleased with Mary's cooking, and eccentric house cleaning (headphones and a fluffy pig, anyone?).

Chesney makes peace with Gemma, will his quiche win him a quickie after all?. Fish fingers and fraternisation are certainly on the menu over a planned supper with young Joseph.

Meanwhile, Sally dreams of yoga on a Hindu retreat and introduces Kevin to the idea of a mindful retreat for young Jack. Kevin tells Sally that he's got a  digital detox holiday planned with his son instead. How very millennial!. Maybe Roy could do with a detox perhaps but fear not, as Carla's filing soon puts him to sleep.


Over at Chesney's, Gemma starts making tea for Joseph and accidentally burns herself with a tray. Exclaiming the 'f word' in true Corrie comedy fashion blurts it out in earshot of the youngster (a lot of that going on tonight) The 'f word' has been dropped, and it isn't 'fish fingers'. Joseph is learning all about birds of prey, so if Chesney lets him watch 'KES', Gemma's 'f word' will be the least of worries! (great film, check it out, kids).

And outside on the street, Simon sits mournfully by the boat, looking a little lost... like a lost buoy perhaps.

Just how much trouble can a boat cause?.

Coronation Street Episode Review Friday 8 February 8.30pm

We’re back and Shona is telling Clayton that she won’t be his drugs mule. She finds an ally in Leanne who recalls the trouble she had with Simon. Then Nick, having realised his mistake, apologises to her and tells her that David is a better person because of her.

Meanwhile Roy gives Carla his gift and shows his friends his mother’s ring which he’s had cleaned. As they gather round to look at it, they notice an inscription: RP 01.03.59 Rhea. What could it mean? Mary thinks it’s a reference to a South American flightless bird, whilst Roy leans towards Rhea Silvia the mythical mother of Romulus and Remus. While I respect both their imagination and detective work, when I think of Sylvia my mind doesn’t immediately go to Roman goddesses or emu’s…but maybe she had hidden depths that we didn’t know about?

Over at the hotel Johnny and Jenny finally have a heart to heart. She tells him that she forgave him too quickly over Liz and that their marriage has been a series of disasters. Johnny tells her that their marriage is worth saving because (amongst other things) he likes the way she makes his tea. Unbelievably an endorsement of her hot beverage skills fails to sway Jenny, so he tells her that she’s not perfect and he’s not perfect but they’re perfect for each other. Which is even more ridiculous then the tea comment because as we all know Jenny Bradley-Connor IS perfect, whilst Johnny is a very silly man with a penchant for pub quizzes who doesn’t realise how lucky he is. Anyway, God knows why but it works, and the Connors are reconciled.

Elsewhere Brian practically has to beg Rita to come back to the Kabin (Johnny take note). She eventually agrees on the condition that she is still the manager and that she doesn’t have to make all the tea, as it’s below her paygrade. For the love of God Reet, you’re 87! Surely it’d be a relief to not have to put on four layers of slap every day to distribute a couple of packets of mint imperials and give Brian the Tanner death-stare when he messes up the papers?

Finally, round at No.8 Shona tells David that she loves him for trying to be ok with her helping Clayton. With their problems resolved they head for bed, when we see someone pick the lock on the back door…

Is it one of Clayton’s prison cronies or is it the ghost of one of Gail’s husbands? It’s probably a safe bet that at least one of them is a bit dissatisfied with the afterlife. Maybe Michael can’t rest because someone’s not squeezing the toothpaste right to the end of the tube. Maybe spending 30 years in the hot place is seriously ruining Brian’s curly perm?

All will surely be revealed soon…
