Coronation Street Episode Review; Weds 11th Sept 8.30pm

'Rage rage against the dying of the light' was Dylan Thomas' most famous refrain when writing about his father's cancer battle. However, for Sinead and Daniel, Micheal Rosens 1989 children's classic 'Were going on a bear hunt' is a touching juxtaposition that highlights the tragedy of a child losing a parent so young. The story works almost as a motif to tonight's episode, and its quite the work of art.

As the two-hander episode begins, the TV announcer warns us of the worst possible news for Sinead and Daniel. Even though I've devoured the most recent press releases and TV mag articles, my heart still races as the couple take a seat in the cancer consultants office.

Meanwhile, over at Number one, Ken tells Peter how much he missed Dierdre at the Wedding and laments about how Dierdre and Sinead would have been great friends.  I've not thought of that before, but I think us viewers can certainly agree with Ken on that?

Missing Dierdre, Ken's sombre mood and emotive words set the tone for the episode perfectly. Peter's prophecy about the married couple's future together, is as ever poignant. Even Peter's most recent struggles with Carla, and the booze, (although unseen here obviously) somehow seem to weave into this catalyst of sadness that's about to rock the Barlow family.

Whilst Baby Bertie is being looked after by an upset Auntie Beth, Mr Merchant (the consultant) breaks the news that Sinead's 'lump' is cancer of the lymph nodes, she has a cancerous mass on her liver, and it's terminal. Daniel questions the lack of regular check-ups and talks uncontrollably about Peter's health battle, as Sinead sits silently, stunned with shock. Although Sinead was until recently 'dancing with n.e.d' (No Existing Disease) cancer has returned and aggressively. The consultant tells them that they can go home,  as neither radiotherapy nor chemo will offer her any resistance against the inevitable succumbing.

The prognosis is dreadful, 3 - 4 months to live, at the most. Sinead is 25 years old, just a year younger than my wife. We also have a baby (who's now 3 years old) so for me, this is incredibly frightening and at odds with this healthy reality (most of us) are lucky enough to take for granted.

Still, it doesn't shy away from the fact this is incredibly real and happening right now. Cancer is never discouraged by class, wealth, race, nor age sadly. Tragic.

Back on Coronation Street, the newlyweds arrive at Number one, alongside the rest of the family, to break the awful news. The Barlows reel in shock at such a tragic outcome. Heading back to the flat, Daniel reaches for the booze, whilst Sinead's anger at having been dealt such a fate is completely forgivable.

Instead of a blissful start to married life, Daniel and Sinead are left with the worst possible nightmare of never celebrating their first year of marriage.
Did Baby Bertie's conception cause Sinead's terminal cancer?. It's unlikely, and never a predicament (fictional or otherwise) anybody as young as Sinead or Daniel should ever have to face.

Katie McGlynn (Sinead Tinker) announced this week that she has already recorded her final scenes as Sinead. After tonight's performances, I'm sure she could easily follow in the successful post-corrie career paths of Sarah Lancashire, Katherine Kelly, and Suranne Jones.

Paradoxically, this was a fantastic episode. It's just so sad that it is heartbreakingly true to life.  And just like life's troublesomely tumultuous rich tapestry ...

'We can't go over it.
We can't go under it.
We've got to go through it!'

Tonight's two-hander was directed by Mikey Jones with great scripts from Carmel Morgan and Jan McVerry.

With Aidan's suicide still fresh in memory, it also is worth noting that Corrie tackle issue-based storylines with real tenacity, sensitivity, and incredibly good writing. Its never about sensationalism, and for that, I admire them greatly. Agree?

Coronation Street Episode Review; Weds 11th Sept 7.30 pm

Starting their honeymoon in bed is how married life should begin. Unfortunately, for newlyweds Sinead and Daniel, it's a hospital bed. Following a classic corrie wedding ( I thought so) it's back to reality for the tragic couple, as they wait for the results of Sinead's urgent scan.  Planning a break in the lakes may keep their minds off the scan results, at least.

Also waking up in bed, it's the morning after the night before, for love-rat Robert. Having been left a naggy moany Michelle voicemail, Robert is equally perturbed to receive a gift from bed mate Vicky; a soldier style dog tag. No me neither. I'm sure he's overjoyed, seeing as her engagement ring cost him about £2000! It's a good job he still has the (obvious cash cow) bistro anyway, as Michelle's misconstrued (?) reaction to Ray fawning all over her, looks to have scuppered the franchise deal. Is Ray a pervy letch or has Michelle's ego taken a bashing? She could be forgiven, as Robert hasn't shown her any interest in months.

As Daniel and Sinead get ready to take a break in the lakes, Maria and Ali also arrive back from their night away. Looking to be reconciled from their little relationship misunderstanding (been a lot of them on corrie recently), it doesn't take long for Maria to discover Ali is overworked at the hospital, a colleague of his is arrested, and Maria is quick to defend her 'backstreet' lifestyle to the dishevelled doctor. A bit of a turn around from last weeks superman heroics, and wouldn't she have noticed his lethargy during their little break?

'Kev the Krank' is feeling a bit rank about Abi's 'hilarious' social media page. Failing to find the funny side (me neither), Kev fills Sophie in on the news, and Abi seems to think its actually a good PR exercise for the garage. Persuaded by Sophie, Kev (very quickly) reinstates Abi and suddenly forgets all about being slagged off online (to about 1000 followers), if it means business starts to grow. Even by corrie standards, that was a very quick-firing/re-hiring. It's like Janice Battersby, and Underworld- all over again!

Forgetting that he was (until recently) skint and sleeping on Gail's floor, Corrie's newly loaded loanshark/furniture magnate, Gary Windass, secretly sneaked £1000 (in cash!) into Kate Connor's purse, so that she can leave the street and travel around Thailand. He may (accidentally) have killed Rana, and turned into a wrong 'un, but I think I speak for a lot of Corrie fans when I say 'THANK YOU GARY!'. I've never been a fan of Kate, to be honest. The only saving grace from her tenure was her mad mate Lauren (she was my favourite!!), and of course, her on/off nearly a relationship but not quite, (until she found Rana), with Sophie Webster.

Kate tells Sophie that she's heading off to Singapore, and Paula tells Sophie she can do better than 'Speed Daal'. We know Sophie is expecting a baby in real-life, is this Sophie's 'exit' story?

Meanwhile, Jenny revels in the fact that Kate thinks SHE gifted her the cash, but Johnny has his suspicions. I've got a theory about where this particular story strand is heading, but, I reckon I shall leave that for another post...

Whilst getting ready to head to the lakes (who's car WAS that?) Bethany tells Daniel that her article for the gazette has been published. The apparent awkwardness between the bistro buddies now appears to have subsided. Back at the flat, Sinead receives a call from the hospital, the scan results are ready and it sounds ominous. We shouldn't catastrophise (that's a great word Daniel) but it looks like the 'mini-moon' honeymoon is off and it's back to the hospital to find out the results.

What next for the Osbourne's?

Do let us know and keep an eye out for a special* 8.30 pm episode review, that follows this one.

*It's a two-hander, that's all I'm saying...

Wear your own piece of Weatherfield

If you'd like to carry off Corrie style or just want to own a piece of Coronation Street history in this, its 50th year on our screens, then you'll have to be quick to snap up the one-off items that Coronation Street has donated from its famous wardrobe to Cancer Research UK’s online shop, http://www.shoptobeatcancer.org.uk/

From Thursday 25th November the online shop, which sells hundreds of brand new items as well as donated clothes, will be selling off a top of Sally Webster’s, a maternity dress worn by Molly Dobbs, one of Steve McDonald’s striped shirts and Becky McDonald’s favourite cropped pink velour jacket pictured above as worn on Coronation Street by actress Katherine Kelly, who plays Becky.

Sally Whittaker, who has fought breast cancer both in real life and as Sally Webster on Coronation Street, said:  ‘’I’m thrilled that someone else will get to wear Sally’s top and own their little bit of Coronation Street. Cancer Research UK carries out extraordinary work to prevent, diagnose and treat cancer so that more people like me can survive. It’s also one of the charities benefiting from Coronation Street’s 50th anniversary appeal so it would be fantastic to see our viewers join in wherever they can, whether they buy one of the Coronation Street items, something else from the online shop or even take a bag of donated clothes to their nearest Cancer Research UK shop.’

Flaming Nora asks Corrie fans to support Cancer Research UK

This is a tricky blog post to write because I've never used the Coronation Street Blog for anything more personal than offering my opinions on Gail Platt's hair (always messy) or Rita's latest musings (always fab).  However, sometimes something happens in your life that makes you want to do as much as you can to help.

What I'd like from our readers, please, is for you to sponsor my teenage niece, Claire. She's doing a sponsored walk on November 28th to raise funds for Cancer Research UK.  Without sounding mawkish, I know times are hard, but anything you can spare to support her and this wonderful charity would be most gratefully appreciated.

Claire is a huge Corrie fan - everyone in our family is!  Her favourite character is Graeme Proctor and his amazing range of weird and wonderful hats and her favourite storyline was the David and Tina abortion storyline. She says her favourite line came from David the other week when he said about how it was okay for Gail to tell Nick about Natasha's abortion, yet at the time of Tina's abortion, she never told him that Tina had one.

Please click here to support Flaming Nora's niece, Claire.  A HUGE thank you to everyone who follows this link to sponsor our Claire.
