Coronation Street wins best soap award at TRIC 2020

The Television and Radio Industry Awards took place this year in that London. And Coronation Street walked away with the award for Soap of the Year.

Another Olivier Nomination For Sharon Gaskell

The nominations for the Olivier Awards, Britain's highest theatrical honours, were announced yesterday.  Among the nominees was a name familiar to Corrie fans.  Tracie Bennett, best known in Weatherfield as Rita's foster daughter Sharon Gaskell, has been nominated as Best Supporting Actress in a Musical for her role in Follies.

Tracie played Sharon on the show in two stints.  She was a tomboy fostered by Len and Rita in 1982, helping out at the builder's yard, before developing a crush on Brian Tilsley.  Even though he was married with a child, she pursued him, and then claimed that they were in love.  It lead to a falling out with Rita, and she took a job in Sheffield to get over Brian, returning briefly after Len's death.

In 1999 she came back to Weatherfield with a fiance, Ian.  He had an affair with Natalie Barnes, though, so she jilted him at the altar.  To support the newly single Sharon, Rita gave her the Kabin for her birthday;  however, after a disastrous relationship with Danny Hargreaves that saw her contemplate suicide, she reconciled with Ian and left town.  A heartbroken Rita bought the shop back off her, and they haven't spoken since.

Tracie is, of course, no stranger to the Oliviers - this is her sixth nomination.  She's been nominated twice for Best Actress, and an incredible four times as Best Supporting Actress, winning twice in 1995 and 2008.  She's also appeared in a wide variety of other films and TV shows, including two (in my opinion) criminally underrated 1990s sitcoms, Joking Apart and Next of Kin.

The 2018 Olivier Awards, hosted by Catherine Tate, are presented at the Royal Albert Hall on the 8th April.

Corrie Weekly Awards for Aug. 28 - 20

Wedding fashion fail: All three of those bridesmaids dressed really are dire, aren't they?

Flip Flop award: Sarah finished with Gary for the umpteenth time and now she's taken him back for the umpteenth time.

Delusional award: Gina fancies Dev. She's convinced Dev fancies her. He doesn't.

Centre of the World award: Dev knows Gina fancies him but he doesn't seem to mind the admiration. It could backfire spectacularly. Just sayin'.

Too Good to be True award: Gary says it's the easiest money he's ever made and Sarah's right, if something sounds too good to be true it usually is. But he's been battered for it, and all.

Wolverine award: What on earth made that pattern of cuts on Gary's ribs? Was he tangling with the X-Men?

Coronation Street Wins Another Award

Coronation Street has been given another award this week. But this time it's not for storylines or actors. It's not for writing or performing. It's for something a little more down to earth than that.

Coronation Street has won the Zero Waste Platinum Award 2017.  Yes, I know, how much more exciting could it be?!

In all seriousness though, the award went today to Corrie for showing Excellence in Recycling & Waste Management. In addition, back in 2011, EDF Energy voted Coronation Street characters 2nd best at being environmentally friendly.  The research was based on how often characters used public transport, the amount of times they used electrical equipment and if they remembered to switch them off, and using local markets, amongst other criteria.
Good on you, Corrie and ITV, for being so environmentally friendly.

Vote for Conversation Street's yearly awards

If you're a fan of the Conversation Street podcast about Coronation Street, then you may be aware that podcasters Michael and Gemma do a year end awards episode featuring awards with a Corrie twist to the award titles.  Best Male/Female get termed "Top Lad" and "Top Lass" and the award for "Our Kid" is given out to the favourite younger actor.  There are also some that you won't find on most award shows.  The "By 'Eck" award goes to the most shocking Corrie moment. The favourite redhead gets a "Flamin' Nora" award and since there's always a good street brawl or two, there are always contenders for the "Ecky Thump" award.

Listeners can vote on all of the categories, too. Listener votes count for 2/3 of the points and Michael and Gemma will make up the balance. The nominations are here and you can vote on the awards here until the end of the year.

Coronation Street Live Uncovered wins Prolific North Award

Coronation Street last night won another award. This time it was the award for best Broadcasting Programme – Entertainment.  The Winner was ITV Studios for Coronation Street Live Uncovered

The award came at the Prolific North Awards 2016 held in Manchester on Thursday April 28, 2016.

Well done to the Coronation Street digital team, pictured above.
