Coronation Street Episode Review Friday 1 September 2023

Welcome to another slice of Weatherfield wondrousness. In a packed programme the prime story is about the lying and deceit of two brothers - first up Ronnie has splashed the cash oNewton and Ridley shares but due to the sudden unexpected departure of Old Mr Newton (see the pic caption above) the shares are in free fall as the market is not sure who will be running the outfit.

Meanwhile Edison is in total ignorance of that and not having the brains of a lightbulb decides to submit a bid on the development land without actually telling Ronnie, who then admits that they do not have the cash.  They get on so well they should actually work for the same business.

And the entire nation shouted "No Jenny, Just NO".  Jenny invites Stephen on an away break.  Tim chimes in on our behalf - and puts Elaine's flat on the market, making Stephen homeless.  However, once Jenny is apprised of Mr Newton (Senior)'s departure she starts worrying that the deal selling the Rovers may turn out different to the one she believed she was expecting.

Henry Newton arrives at the Rovers and knows even less than those who have read the paper!  After speaking to his father he can report the offer is a "Corleone" - one you cannot refuse.  In a private conversation between Ronnie and Henry, the former lets slip that he knows Waterfords are involved.

Henry returns from the Board Meeting where (in reference to Succession) he was treated like Kendall Roy and the news is not good - the deal is done - L S Waterford Food and Drink Incorporated own everything and a woman called Lydia Flint will be doing the rounds of the public houses.  Jenny is positive - Elon Musk bought Twitter and that turned out all right, didn't it?  Henry is not even sure he has a job, let alone needs a PA.

Ty is off to Kettering to do a mid-way pick up of the girls from Fiz.  He suggests to Cassie that she gets some frozen pizzas to feed them on her return and he hands over £20!  Ty gets Evelyn to mind the girls when he returns as he has a dental appointment and Ty effectively admits he does not trust Cassie.  Evelyn kindly sets about the dirty washing which the girls have brought back with them whilst Ty reports that Kettering is apparently grim.  When Cassie returns she has a somewhat battered pizza (and it has not been deep fried - it looks soggy and defrosted to me) and seems slightly "over-refreshed" - but she finally gets to meet Hope and Ruby.  Apparently the job centre was shut due to staff shortages.  Ty offers Cassie a job answering the phone in the garage - with full training.

Simon is at work - using a wet teaspoon in the sugar jar.  That lad needs some training!  Stephen asks Carla for some time off to go away with Jenny, and Carla wants to know how long he has been knocking off her step-mum!  Sarah is convinced that Stephen is spending the Nippersnapper payout before they have received it instead of repaying Audrey's equity release - which Stephen denies.  Later Carla confirms to Roy that she is progressing the drugs test.  Stephen discusses his imminent homelessness with Sarah - whilst a "not eavesdropping" Kirk offers him the use of Peanuts' room - the dog can sleep in his bed.

However for Stephen, moving into the B&B room at the Rovers with the potential for cross-landing padding has rather more appeal.  Sarah again warns Stephen against spending the Nippersnapper money on anything other than the mortgage.

Eliza gets to meet her father, Dom, at the precinct and the latter has forgotten to bring his wallet so is unable to buy the ice-creams - leaving Stu putting his hand in his pocket!  Dom seems keen to spoil his daughter and Eliza lets slip that Stu is minted - and Yasmeen is on her way to Pakistan.

Bernie is shopping and Dev sees a message on her phone from Big Garth arranging a meeting and Dev accuses Bernie of cheating on him.  Her only solution is to tell Dev the entire story about Shelly and the computers which need fencing.  However they are interrupted by Tim in search of a cauliflower for cauliflower cheese.  Dev does not take the explanation at all well given that fraud is involved - and Bernie admits it could be the end of their involvement.  Dev later arrives at Number 5 with a bunch of flowers for Bernie.  He tries to get her to tell Paul and says it will end with Bernie inside - but Dev will not tell anyone - Bernie is so desperate to provide for Paul, to whom Tim later mentions the tension between Dev and Bernie.

Although Henry had indicated that it would take 6 weeks before Lydia Flint (Christina Tam) materialised she has decided that the Rovers Return would be an ideal starting point and Jenny shows her around.  Her marketing idea is to have positive quotes on a chalkboard, plus getting the staff into their uniforms.  She gives Jenny the impression that all jobs are safe and that the Waterfords do not rock boats.  Sean is not so sure.

Debbie hears that Waterfords acquiring Newton and Ridley has been completed (and frankly when it is completed the shares are delisted, plus for a quoted company it takes weeks) but is able to tell the Bailey Bros that the shares have shot up in value and they are quids in as per the original plans.  The Baileys share a pint and then Ronnie departs leaving Ed to read the paper - and he espies the Racing page and we are left wondering if his ancient interest in the odd flutter will return.

I remain underwhelmed by the Bailey family.  There, I have said it.  There seems to be confusion over the status of Newton and Ridley - it is a quoted company or Ronnie could not buy shares.  Henry refers to it as a family-run business and yet we know it is quoted.  Quoted companies have extensive rules over "approaches" from potential bidders to avoid the risks of insider trading - and would ensure any CEO leaving would be properly managed with a formal succession plan in place.  So unrealistic characters against an impossible storyline translates into total disaster.

Now can Carla prove her drug intake and might she mention it to Sarah who knows about the equity release and can Jenny remember Leo's mysterious disappearance whilst we know Lou wants the investigation into Rufus's drug overdose to be investigated so would LSD floating around Underworld be relevant?  Is a noose forming or with one bound will Stephen be free?

Coronation Street Episode Review Friday 18 August 2023

Events largely revolve around the Plummer family because we now know that Tyrone is actually a Plummer, along with Evelyn and Cassie, since Cassie let the moggy loose on Wednesday evening.  Ty is conscious that Evelyn has not been entirely honest (well you can sort of see her point of view) and who would not be curious about their "dead" mother?

However first up Tyrone is supposed to be fizzing off to Norwich with Hope and Ruby and he shows some sense in that he engineers keeping the two girls away from his uncertain mother by organising for Kev to drive them halfway - so somewhere around where the M6 and A14 meet Fiz will take the kids on!

Ty goes to the flat where Evelyn and Cassie are living and sends his Nan out whilst he listens to Cassie spin a story - and it is a good story - but it comes from an addict - is it the truth or is it "her truth"?  When Evelyn returns she is told in no uncertain terms that a) Cassie is coming to live on t'Street and b) Evelyn is persona non grata for the foreseeable future.

Evelyn knows that Cassie stole cash and Cassie denies it.  Roy also tells Evelyn some home truths - everyone is being very unfair to the Dame tonight - Cassie accuses Evelyn (to Tyrone) of being controlling.  Evelyn denies it and they argue but Ty has made his decision.

The time has come for a Bailey story.  Apparently the last job at Tavern Mews made money and they need to re-invest in a sure fire winner.  Ed is cautious and wants to continue with modest property development - he knows it, understands it and can do it in his sleep.  Ronnie meanwhile fancies something which is a little more speculative and they are in the lounge at Chariot Square when they spot Philip Newton (of Newton and Ridley) dining with Jason Waterford and drinking the hotel's finest champagne.

Debbie explains to Ronnie that Waterford is a major food and drink retailer who is expanding by buying pubs and breweries.  Due to a little sleight of hand Debbie gets her hands on a document implying that Waterford is going to buy Newton and Ridley - so investing in Newton and Ridley shares is going to make a lot of money.  I wonder if Henry Newton knows he is about to lose his birthright?  And is it insider trading?  Ed refuses to get involved.

Ryan's behaviour is becoming more irrational as the steroid injections are impacting his mental stability - so having exchanged words with Carla over her tidying his bedroom he assaults the wardrobe - which takes the damage silently.

Later outside Vikki Gardens Ryan has a funny turn and Gary stops to help him.  Ryan claims that he has simply overdone his exercise and denies he has taken anything stronger than caffeine.  He apologises to Carla but has a realisation that perhaps the steroids are doing more harm than good so stuffs them in the waste basket.  But is it really over?

George has printed new Shuttleworth business cards showing Todd's award under the latter's name on the bottom of the card.  Todd has started his training course - but is finding the studying difficult.  This being Coronation Street he will probably be on Ritalin or Adderall within days so he can cope.  Apparently according to George a massage is good for dead bodies as it helps rigor mortis.  I get the sense that all the morgue related chat over the breakfast table is a bit much for Eileen.

Carla is back and I mean Carla is back.  Marching around the factory, preparing for a killer speech to a retailer - but Carla accepts assistance from Stephen - are they going to be able to work together?  The meeting goes well and indeed Carla even acknowledges that Stephen was helpful and he knows his stuff.

Roy goes to the flat and seeks to make his peace with Evelyn who says that Cassie is using - no proof but she knows it - and Ty is too trusting.  Evelyn has the chance to tell "her truth" and she knows that Cassie is an addict.  With Cassie ensconced at the Dobbs' house we see inside her bag and can see that Evelyn was indeed right as she has a box of the pregablin - the drug she mentioned earlier.  Ty and Cassie toast their future.

Bonus shot of Cassie - but simply because that is the door onto the balcony - it is not the front door - behind her - so why does it have a letter box?

I find writing about Cassie hard for a couple of reasons - some elements feel a little close to home for various reasons - but also it is fair to say that (and no-one reads this far down do they?) I find Ms Sweeney very attractive (am I allowed to say things like that these days?).  I would probably be dumbstruck if I was ever lucky enough to meet her and will continue to admire from afar - but it does influence my reporting!  Eg I cannot imagine a Liverpudlian girl not having a backbone and not being able to deal with bullies.  And Ty is 40 and I have trouble believing that Cassie is much older than that!

And alongside this can someone have a word with management please?  I realise that drug addiction is bad - but to have Ryan and Cassie both dosing themselves is at least two too many in a single episode.  Steroids and pregabalin by the way are both controlled class C drugs in the UK.

Coronation Street Episode Review Friday 11 August 2023

The big news is the return of Dirk to the action and he is not even in the factory as he and Kirk make it to the memorial being held for the late Rufus Donahue.  Numbers attending are minimal and dear old Uncle Stephen summons the factory faithful to the Chariot Square Hotel to make it look as if Rufus was a much loved member of the Manchester Rag Trade Community.  And if anyone can tell me where Kirk got that shirt please let me know - I want one!

Lou has been to the police station and has collected Rufus' effects - including a tie-pin - and for newcomers Stephen has a convenient flashback to the tie-pin falling away from Stephen's tie as Rufus died.

Slightly more importantly, young Ruby Dobbs has had a magical head transplant and it is so effective that Glenda announces that Ruby will be taking the big solo at the forthcoming "Little Big Shotz" Summer Spectacular show.  Now judging by the face on Hope Stape (and why does she still want that surname?) the person most surprised by this decision is not Ruby but Hope who considered it was a nailed-on certainty that her natural abilities would outshine everyone else.

Glenda speaks approvingly of how Ruby has worked hard to ensure she knows the lines and will give a "special" performance.  Hope by the way is backing singer number 3.  Nina offers to do Hope's make-up for the performance and that seems to ease the situation, as it will be amazing.

Roy is an old softie so at Shona's request gives Lauren a trial shift - a poster girl for eating, well not a lot - I certainly cannot see her having a full English any time soon.  It is fair to say that Lauren is not a natural - delivering coffee when tea has been ordered and George's egg has gone nowhere near the poacher because it completely slipped her mind to pass on the order.  Lauren passes the trial shift to absolutely no-one's surprise (except Lauren of course).

Max breaks his promise to check on Lauren during her shift as Sabrina materialises at the bus stop and they go to the Platt house to play computer games.  Max admits that just being mates is not enough for him.  Sabrina agrees - but cannot be with him whilst Lauren is in his life.  Max later tells Lauren that it is not back on with Sabrina because he will not cut Lauren out of his life.

Talking of tea it appears that Peter makes tea backwards, according to Tim putting the milk in first (which we all know is the right way).  Tim never noticed.  The Stu and Eliza story rumbles along as he does not want her having contact with her father Dom - but the latter is taking legal advice and few think Stu is approaching the problem wisely.

Bernie convinces Chesney that he has little to worry about - Gemma loves him and not Henry.  Gemma meets Henry at the precinct and very reluctantly she agrees to taking the job (she has the skills to be a PA... since when?) in exchange for him saving the Rovers.  Henry later goes to the Rovers and asks for a word with Jenny.  The brewery will buy and keep Jenny on.  Henry explains that Chesney apologised and the figures are borderline - and Henry has always had a soft spot for the place - contracts will be drawn up.  Jenny makes an announcement to the punters and only Gemma does not look to happy about events.  When Gemma gets home she is in for a treat - not sex as she is too tired - but Chesney has made her favourite - a Scotch egg!  Gemma bites the bullet and reveals she has been offered a job at the brewery HQ as Henry's PA.  Chesney is not happy - but it is full time work and the money will be useful.

With the memorial for Rufus out of the way Lou is in the Bistro with Carla, both drinking coffee, with Lou convinced that Rufus did not have an accident - despite the decisions which have happened.  He was apparently good at micro-dosing on drugs and would not make a mistake.  They were estranged but Lou is convinced that there is more to be found.  Rufus was not a tie wearer and certainly not a tie-pin wearer - so why was there one by the pool?

Lou also mentions to Carla, as Peter arrives, that she simply cannot find the watch which was his pride and joy and which is promised to Jools, their son, when he is 18.  Once Lou has gone Peter recalls finding the watch in the back of his cab, pawning it for £15k which paid for Carla's rehab when Uncle Stephen was more than microdosing her beverages with LSD!  Whoops.  Carla suggests to Peter that he should explain to Lou and that is the best way of making it right.

Stephen phones Lou to re-arrange the meeting on Nippersnapper - but she cannot manage tomorrow morning - she has a meeting with Weatherfield's finest to discuss the tie-pin and the inscription "Love G x".  And I conclude the G is Gabrielle.  Can Uncle Stephen feel a noose steadily tightening around his neck?

And whilst writing I have been blessed once again with BBC Radio Oxford broadcasting the Cropredy Convention.  So my thanks to Fairport and that lovely field in Oxfordshire - and one day we shall all "Meet on the Ledge".
