Coronation Street Episode Review;Wednesday 31st of August 8 pm

Whatever else happened in tonight's Corrie, I'd already seen a preview, so this review was inevitably going to be about Audrey's salon reopening!!! An icon all on its own, we've been starved of Audrey's blue-rinse brigade, since the pandemic, and Ray Crosby's failed Coronation Street buy-out. Tonight was a cause for real celebration then, and Corrie did not disappoint! I seem to write this every week now, and I always will, when they have these really big cast gatherings, post-covid. With everyone outside the re-branded salon, Roy, Ken, Rita, and the Platt’s congregated in the sunshine (I’m guessing filming was during one of those heatwaves we had) giving a ceremonial nostalgic tint to proceedings.

A relic relaunched (minus the Renshaw twins), the old guard tells Audrey that maybe a confession about her suicide attempt, to her family, is long overdue. Inside the salon, Stephen asks Audrey about the trust fund paperwork, and Audrey's renewed vigour has given her a change of heart - she's not going to proceed with the trust fund, which refuses him the power of attorney and control of the cash.

Thinking back to Gail's monologue in the aftermath of Aidan's suicide, and Audrey’s recent suicide attempt, that confession to her daughter, couldn’t have been any more apt, poignant, or tinged with sadness, and was undoubtedly tonight’s standout scene! Here are two actresses that have cemented their onscreen relationships for about 40 years, and it’s one of those scenes where Corrie’s TV longevity only adds to the dramatics. No hyperbole required - that was just brilliant. With the clan gathered at Number 8. Audrey reveals all to the rest of the family, promising herself a new start, sobriety, and a bog-standard will, splitting her money between them, apart from Stephen, because she still thinks he’s loaded. Later, we see Stephen buying a suit from the local charity shop. He’s clearly brassic.

Feeling like the street’s pariah, Toyah is cheered up by a lunch invite from Peter, and the old partners catch up at Roy’s Rolls putting the world to rights. Spider’s arrival, alongside his echo-warrior friend, gives Peter some thoughts about possibly joining them at a new protest. The problem is that the target for a protest is Carla’s latest potential bigshot Underworld client. With Carla back on top form, Stephen goes berserk behind the bins, realising he’s run out of monetary business options.

Aadi and Kelly’s rush to get (underage) married, and courting the idea of eloping to Gretna Green, takes my Corrie brain back to the 1990s when Leanne and Nick did just that. Is this a rehash of an old storyline or something a little different? Tonight, the lovesick teens cause Dev parental woes, and tears in the shop, causing Asha to confront her brother. Kelly makes Aadi see sense but he tells his Dad he’d still like to stay at Gary and Maria’s for a bit. Later, the teens email a registrar in Scotland, setting up the rushed nuptials.

Elsewhere, Jenny and Leo’s relationship finally cracks under the weight of his dullness (sorry, but come on!) and, having been covered in poo working for Ed, he decides to take that job in Toronto. Jenny’s maturity leads the way, it’s an amicable split, and quite frankly, I can't see him being missed.

Can he take Stephen Reid, and his terrible suit, back to Canada with him?

A superb episode tonight. Is it me, or is the show on 100% top form right now?

Coronation Street Episode Review;Wednesday 20th of July 8 pm

50 grand, 30 grand, or 24 grand? That's tonight's prize money in the Corrie crime caper competition. Compensation or ransom money: I can't say I'm bothered, either way. I'd much rather we see a random romance on the red rec or in the rovers but in this Netflix / TV streaming era, they need to add spice to the Corrie hotpot. Tonight, Kelly remains trapped by her random enforcers in what I can only assume is a disused part of the Redbank building?  It's a superb set design! Kelly’s captors continue to menace her in the darkly lit basement whilst Gary scurries around to try and find the (ridiculous) £50K ransom demand -he still manages to get £24K (!) from somewhere.

Meanwhile, Maria gets a call from P.C Tinker telling her that the naughty handbag tracker has led them to arrest Darren, the environmental guy, who perved over her at last week’s council shindig. She tells Gary this, but he’s more concerned about assuring Kelly’s safety, who remains trapped and in danger - with distant police sirens giving a sinister edge to the proceedings. Gary meets the kidnappers and gives them £24K, but the men refuse to give her up. Later, he uses a tracker (are they a good thing, now?) to find Kelly but he gets knocked out in a scuffle. Gary soon awakens and crowbars the kidnapper, threatening to finish him off. Kelly then sees that side of him, the murderous one that we viewers all know. Later on, and safely home, they both discuss the aftermath of violence, and a palpable tension is now present between them.

Speaking of silly money amounts and crime, Debbie is struggling to get Ed that compo cash together, and rather than face bankruptcy, starts to get desperate. Aggie seems hellbent on wringing Debbie dry of £30K (a bit steep for an electric shock, but yeah okay) Meeting at Number 3, it seems it's a stalemate, with Aggie demanding the money, and within weeks. Will she kidnap Debbie if Ed doesn't get the cash? I am joking, but I do wonder how Debbie will get out of it? Anyway, that's enough of Corrie's crime for tonight's episode review. In a lighter and more traditional Corrie sense of things;

Gail organises another family meal for the Platt clan, and David announces a planned surprise for Audrey. I wonder if Max will reappear yet? In the meantime, David has a hard time tonight coming up against Gail, and an unforgiving Audrey. I wonder why the lad bothers! Funny though.

I don't play the sport, but I did find myself agreeing with Sean tonight ( a very rare thing) when faced with Frank’s awful attitude towards football and his blatant machismo. Finally showing his true colours to Dylan, Sean did the decent thing by dumping him, I thought, and in fact, that was my favourite moment tonight: real-life relatable drama.

Elsewhere - Phill conjures up another cringeworthy romcom moment in the factory, hurting his back. Helped by Fiz, he deliriously agrees to sign the annulment. Tyrone gets a new tattoo to cover up the AP, and it looks like Mick Hucknall, he didn't realise you can have laser removal treatment! It is expensive though. If I was him I'd borrow some from Gary Windass, or Aggie, just don't be asking Debbie, I think she's skint!

Kelly’s Homeless Drugs Crisis At Christmas!: Corrie Blog Chats To Millie Gibson

Kelly Neelan is Coronation Street's archetypal troubled teen. She's rebellious and misunderstood, vulnerable, and prone to self-destruction. Similar to a (younger) Abi, perhaps? Things have improved somewhat for Kelly recently, and guided by homeless friend Stu, she's gained a hairdressing job with Maria, made an ally in Aadi, and even Nina has cooled towards her! Nevertheless, Abi's return to the street means Kelly can’t stay around much longer. Reeling from Abi's warning to leave Coronation Street, the teenager promises to try and find somewhere else to live.

Could Kelly be facing homelessness again this Christmas? Corrie blog donned a festive jumper, downed a mince pie, and joined an ITV zoom session to interview actor Millie Gibson, who told us all about it!

Hi Millie, What an incredible year you have had on the show!

When you joined Coronation Street, did you ever imagine being involved in such hard-hitting storylines?

No, not at all. I'm honoured and flattered to be trusted and be involved in such storylines. They are all very current and woke; hate crime, teen suicide, drug use, living on the streets, they are all delicate and equally challenging serious issues!

What has the public reaction been like?

It’s still quite mixed, I’m not sure if that comes as a surprise still. We have seen struggle with time in prison, the injustice, and more so when she came out. I think viewers are still holding on to her involvement in the attack.

Are viewers still ‘Team Abi’ do you think?

Yes, and I think it’s hard to have sympathy for someone who's involved in such a horrible crime! It would be hard to give someone like that any sympathy, but people can relate to it.

How does Kelly feel when Abi tells her to leave Coronation Street?

Kelly never thought she would have allies with people like Nina, the Alahan’s, and Yasmeen. As she gets people on board, and her redemption begins, she realises she can’t share the same world as Abi. Abi is full of vengeance and anger for her. Kelly then starts to go into that self-destructive turmoil mindset again.

On Boxing Day, Kelly still can’t find anywhere to stay. Before she goes, she leaves flowers for Seb at the memorial garden. Abi finds out and is furious. How does Kelly feel about this?

It is an overreaction but if you put yourself in Abi’s shoes, she finds flowers from a person that was involved in her son’s murder. It acts as a reminder, it’s anger, and she kicks off big time. It triggers her next actions against Kelly and it’s the very worst. It becomes like bullying in that respect

With things taking a turn for the worse, Kelly goes back on the ‘spice’ again. How has it felt portraying this homeless / drug abuse storyline?

It's been very challenging, and I was quite nervous to act out the scenes on spice. I did some research on how to perform it and I did some work with SHELTER to educate me in the homeless aspect. It was heartbreaking to learn more about young women being homeless. Responsibility is a big thing - I wanted to do it justice.

Kelly begrudgingly heads to an NA (narcotics anonymous) meeting, where Abi is also in attendance. How does she feel about this?

In the NA meeting, it becomes apparent how weirdly alike Abi and Kelly are. It seems they both have a similar relationship with drugs, like a lot of addicts, and the family loss, alongside the self-destructive mindset. She doesn’t want to make too much of it in the meeting, at the risk of rattling Abi, but she speaks about her personal experiences and feelings, and Abi recognises a lot of herself in Kelly.

Gary and Maria also offer to help and look out for Kelly. Does she see them as a new family unit?

I think it’s another unlikely home situation. She’s house hopping and happy to have open arms and a roof over her head. However, it’s ironic that everything she’s been through so far, she wouldn’t have been through, if it wasn’t for Gary, and he knows that. If the truth comes out, it could be the final straw for Kelly!

                                                                   ***

I think we can all agree that Millie Gibson has given outstanding performances throughout this year. Maybe 2022 will see her reconcile and become a confidante of Abi? Laura is also due back on the scene, so it looks likely that more trouble is on its way for Kelly!

Coronation Street Episode Review; Wednesday 29th September 7.30 & 8.30

Even PC Craig Tinker would be hard-pressed to believe that Kelly killed Seb, rather than Corey! However unbelievable that may be, it has undoubtedly ranked up the drama, giving the Hate Crime story this completely new strand. Tonight, Corrie wrapped up the first part of the story as Kelly faced sentencing, ultimately receiving a life term with a minimum of 15 years. Although Corey and Abi were not in court, Kev, Debbie, Gary, and Toyah took seats to witness the event. It's a tough sentence, but I think this conviction only serves to drive the plot forward?

Kelly will be free soon, somehow, but not before Imran has a crisis of his own doing! Kev’s punch (outside of court) probably only added injury to insult for the overworked solicitor. Sabeen may have been his saviour, taking him to the hospital, but surely she was just keeping him sweet for the Harvey Gaskill case? Otherwise, she would blackmail him into it? And that’s if he slept with Sabeen, the night that Kelly was convicted? Gary saw Imran in town that night, but we viewers didn't see that, nor did we see Imran get romantic with Sabeen, so I wonder if Toyah's suspicion will be proven incorrect? As for Kevin, his frustrations are sure to continue. Abi has fled to Doncaster, and it looks like Corey has made it to Weatherfield County first team!

Audrey’s taken Norris’ posthumous joke to heart, hasn't she! Feeling guilt over the hair-dying malarkey, Gail & Sarah organise Audrey a belated Birthday Bash at the Bistro. Audrey’s sudden sobriety has to be a sign of something wrong? Aud's had a gin in every episode since the 70s!! Seriously though, our Audrey has been in the show a long-time, so I wonder if tonight was a gag about her age, or is it a serious story about a woman reaching her twilight years?! Audrey driving into Rita’s car will surely reprise the Coronation Street parking subplot storyline. Agie was on the sidelines but not Sally, so I expect her clipboard and power suit cannot be too far away! Also, why are Streetcars not involved in this parking permit storyline?

Anyway, Corrie has had a lot of youth storylines on the street this year, so I think this Rita / Audrey feud could be balancing things out before the year ends. Talking of nights drawing in, Debbie has had some leaflets printed for the Horrornation Street ™ * Halloween event that Debbie and Nick are organising at the old brewery building. Ooh, spooky! Maybe the snooker hall 'ghost' will make a reappearance?

This is my last post for September 2021.  I reckon with these recent stories, October is going to be full of even more drama. Can't wait!

Elsewhere in tonight's episodes: Nina has designs on Asha, and Daniel makes amends with Max!

* it's probably not trademarked, but, wouldn't that make a great fan event?!
