Coronation Street Episode Review; Wednesday 29th September 7.30 & 8.30

Even PC Craig Tinker would be hard-pressed to believe that Kelly killed Seb, rather than Corey! However unbelievable that may be, it has undoubtedly ranked up the drama, giving the Hate Crime story this completely new strand. Tonight, Corrie wrapped up the first part of the story as Kelly faced sentencing, ultimately receiving a life term with a minimum of 15 years. Although Corey and Abi were not in court, Kev, Debbie, Gary, and Toyah took seats to witness the event. It's a tough sentence, but I think this conviction only serves to drive the plot forward?

Kelly will be free soon, somehow, but not before Imran has a crisis of his own doing! Kev’s punch (outside of court) probably only added injury to insult for the overworked solicitor. Sabeen may have been his saviour, taking him to the hospital, but surely she was just keeping him sweet for the Harvey Gaskill case? Otherwise, she would blackmail him into it? And that’s if he slept with Sabeen, the night that Kelly was convicted? Gary saw Imran in town that night, but we viewers didn't see that, nor did we see Imran get romantic with Sabeen, so I wonder if Toyah's suspicion will be proven incorrect? As for Kevin, his frustrations are sure to continue. Abi has fled to Doncaster, and it looks like Corey has made it to Weatherfield County first team!

Audrey’s taken Norris’ posthumous joke to heart, hasn't she! Feeling guilt over the hair-dying malarkey, Gail & Sarah organise Audrey a belated Birthday Bash at the Bistro. Audrey’s sudden sobriety has to be a sign of something wrong? Aud's had a gin in every episode since the 70s!! Seriously though, our Audrey has been in the show a long-time, so I wonder if tonight was a gag about her age, or is it a serious story about a woman reaching her twilight years?! Audrey driving into Rita’s car will surely reprise the Coronation Street parking subplot storyline. Agie was on the sidelines but not Sally, so I expect her clipboard and power suit cannot be too far away! Also, why are Streetcars not involved in this parking permit storyline?

Anyway, Corrie has had a lot of youth storylines on the street this year, so I think this Rita / Audrey feud could be balancing things out before the year ends. Talking of nights drawing in, Debbie has had some leaflets printed for the Horrornation Street ™ * Halloween event that Debbie and Nick are organising at the old brewery building. Ooh, spooky! Maybe the snooker hall 'ghost' will make a reappearance?

This is my last post for September 2021.  I reckon with these recent stories, October is going to be full of even more drama. Can't wait!

Elsewhere in tonight's episodes: Nina has designs on Asha, and Daniel makes amends with Max!

Corrie Blog Interviews Sally Carman - Stunts, Seb's Dad, & Kev Split Shock! Is Abi Out For Revenge?

Soap awards, soap awards, wherefore art thou soap awards!

Okay, it’s not quite Shakespeare is it, and I am paraphrasing slightly, but Corrie has undoubtedly been at the higher echelons of English drama in recent weeks. By the end of tonight's (Friday's) episodes, we will know that Corey's cleared of murder and Kelly is convicted. Abi is understandably distraught - could the grieving Mother be out for revenge? Corrie has confirmed that this story is far from over with some huge! shocks promised for the October soap week, and Abi is firmly at the centre of them. How is Abi going to cope with the fall-out? Can Abi and Kevin survive, can Abi get some vengeance for Seb, and what about her explosive temperament? Is a (stunt-filled) tragedy of Shakespearean proportions about to hit Weatherfield?

Following her success at this week's various television & media awards, it was an honour to join an online press event for Coronation Street Blog and chat with Abi actress Sally Carman (SC) to learn more about this shocking verdict!

If you aren't a fan of soap spoilers - you may want to stop reading at this point. You have been warned...

Hi Sally!! Firstly, Congratulations on this week’s awards haul and this past few weeks of brilliant Corrie!

Q - The last few weeks of court scenes have been incredible! How was it different to you, then say to film a street or studio-based episode?

SC - ‘'Well it’s been very different for me as I came down with Covid and was off work for a month. I ended up filming all of my bits in 2 days (separately) and being read the lines by Woody Wade (Corrie 1st assistant director) There was no one else in the courtroom set apart from Michael Le Vell (Kevin Webster) and we did a scene outside the court too. It was strange as I still wasn’t 100% but the director (Mickey Jones) mixed it so well. It was very tense and went quite quickly’'

Q - What has the fan reaction been?

SC - ''It’s been brilliant, because, to do a storyline that affects people, a hate crime that affects people, you have that added responsibility. It’s been a real privilege and it’s something that Corrie are very good at doing''

Q - How was it putting the flashback scenes together?

SC - ''Again, that’s been interesting because we only have the scripts, you’ve no idea what the finished product will look like. When you do watch it, to see how devastating it is - you’re taken aback by that. It was violent but necessary. The young cast have been fantastic at telling this story, and they’ve blown it out of the park’'

Q - How does Abi feel upon learning the verdict?

SC - ‘'She was daring to believe that justice could be done. She did everything by the book, with Imran saying ''trust me'' and she was hopeful (which is a hard emotion for Abi anyway) but with this result, a line has been reached, massively crossed - and she can’t let this go'’

Q - Does Abi sympathise when finding out about Kelly’s suicide attempt?

SC - ''I don’t know if Abi is emotionally mature enough to realise how much damage that could cause, to think ‘’ hold on, that’s bad’’ but she’s softening, realising it’s not Kelly who attacked Seb and with time she may have the empathy’'

Q - What effect does the verdict have on her relationship with Kevin?

SC - ‘'Abi leaves Kevin (and Jack)! She can’t let go of what’s happened, and she’s not quite sure of what she’s going to do. Even though she loves both of them, ironically, that is why she has to leave them both. She doesn't want either of them involved in something that may or could now happen due to the trial's verdict’'

Q - What has Abi got planned now the verdict is in?

SC - ''It is life-changing, HUGE, and all of those things. She’s driven by a force that she can't stop. It is out of her hands as well but she has to do what she has to do''

Q - Kevin goes looking for Abi, and the results of which can be seen doing October soap week, which you are filming right now. Without giving too much away, we hear it’s going to be EPIC!

SC - ''It’s ridiculous! It’s outrageous! And so much fun. We’ve been on night shoots, stunts galore, and it’s one of those storylines that as an actor you think ‘’come on, let's have it’’! We were in the studio last week doing stunts and I was pinching myself that I get to do this. I'm happy’’

Q - Will Kevin be able to stop Abi? The boundaries are being pushed but Abi is so vulnerable, and yet is always about to explode?

SC - ''That’s the golden ticket, isn’t it! Being able to play a character that has such a good heart, but is completely emotionally immature to the point where she’s like a 2 year old. She is very reactive, and there’s nothing she’s not capable of doing. She’s an emotionally undeveloped walking heartbeat - watch out!''

Q - Will her actions signal the end of Kevin and Abi? We know there’s a plan enacted during big soap week. Can you tell us anything about that?

SC - '‘I don’t know whether I can say anything, other than someone from Abi’s past is going to make a return and she turns to someone else for help, but it's not Kevin. A blast from the past who she reaches out to. The circumstances that they are going through, they do love each other and have found something so I would hope they have that faith in each other’'

Q - How did you feel when you found out that Corey got away with Seb’s murder?

SC - ''Well, there are two parts to that. As an actor you go ''ooh what’s going to happen next’’ but as a character, I think ''Well how much more has she got to go through and how has he managed to get off?'' Especially just watching those scenes in court, I wasn’t there as you know, seeing Max (Corey actor Maximus Evans) on screen, standing in court looking half-bored, giving out menacing looks - he doesn’t care if the audience like him or not, Max is brilliant. He’s such a nice guy but I could kill Corey!''

Corey escaped the law - but can he escape Abi?

Q - We can reveal that the character returning from Abi’s past is Seb’s Dad, Abi looks him up, and the viewers will realise he’s a bit of a wrong ‘un. Is this an important move for you, in terms of Abi’s character development?

SC ''Yes, I liked what they did with that. We were due to film more scenes (with Stephen Lord playing Seb's Dad) but I got ill so we couldn’t do more. It’s a very dark story and he does try to worm his way back into her life. She tells him to ‘’do one’'!

Shameless, Eastenders, Holby City Actor, Stephen Lord will play Seb's Dad in upcoming scenes

Thanks, Sally!

It's a very typical Abi response isn't it, and I'm sure we have more to come! Corrie did warn us and told me to tell you: ''If you’ve been surprised by Abi’s actions in the past - you haven’t seen anything yet!’’

What do you think of this latest development?

I think Sally Carman is one of the best actresses in the show’s history. I've been watching since 1997, have an encyclopedic knowledge of Corrie's past, and I could easily see Abi as a character in any of the shows formative decades. Superb stuff! and well done Coronation Street for this week's award haul - well deserved!

Asha attacks Corey? Corrie Blog speaks to actress Tanisha Gorey

Asha Alahan has found herself being drawn right into the heart of the hate crime attack and its shocking aftermath. Initially, Asha believed Corey was innocent, but when he demanded a fake alibi for the night of the murder, she slowly realised that her boyfriend could be guilty after all?

Confiding in Adi about her plan, and slowly winning Nina over, can Asha convince Corey that she’s still on his side? Enacting a plot to bring the truth to light, could Asha be in more danger than she realises?

I was very privileged in joining Coronation Street online to learn more from the actress that plays Asha, Tanisha Gorey (TG)

Q This storyline has been such a rollercoaster for Asha. How is she feeling about everything?

TG Asha is all over the place at the minute, isn't she! and so many people are involved in this storyline. Maybe she would have given Corey an alibi if Nina wasn't involved. It’s that desperation to be loved, which is why she went back to Corey. She’s still in love with Nina, she’s upset about Seb, and has quite the history with Corey.

Q Does Asha still have feelings for Corey or is Nina where her heart lies?

TG When Asha found out about the attack, it was clear that she still has feelings for Nina. In her eyes, she was the love of Asha’s life, she wanted to be with her, but it all stopped because of Nina. Asha just got a bit obsessed with her. But when the attack happened, it cemented those feelings. She’s still got underlying feelings for Nina!

Q She comes up with a plan to out Corey. Does she feel somehow responsible for what's happened?

TG Absolutely 100%. She and Nina have already had something, so that's enough already and Corey is being so horrible to her. She’s a smart girl, who's starting to realise that things aren't adding up and that she's been lying to everybody on the street trying to cover for him!

Q Asha decides to proceed with her plan to get the truth out of Corey. Can you tell us what’s going through her mind as the plan takes hold?

TG She’s worried and scared, Corey is physically tall, threatening, and feels intimidated by him. However, she feels that she needs to do this for Nina, who has lost Seb, it's just too much. Asha feels that she has to make something happen and feels that she has to do something and to do it for Nina!

Q Unfortunately, things don't go to plan and Corey ends up falling down the stairs! How does Asha feel after this has happened?

TG Hatred completely succumbs her and she’s worried about what she’s going to do. She sees Corey lying unconscious, she’s only so panics about how to react. But of course, she is smart, so she knows that she will be in serious trouble if she is caught. She was trying to get information from him and she can't play dirty!

Q Nina and Abi are in the flat with her at the time. If they weren't there, what would Asha do?

TG Maybe just leave him, He’s done so much damage, she would be thinking of Nina and Seb. But in the end, she is smart, so she would get help and do the right thing.

Q - How has it been working with Mollie (Gallagher - Nina) and Sally (Carman - Abi)

TG As an actress it's just been an incredibly eye-opening experience. Mollie is just wow! and she hasn't even been here that long. They are both amazing to work with! The acting that goes into their work has been mesmerizing. I feel honoured.

Q What's it been like working with the younger teen members of the cast? Are you all off-screen friends as well?

TG Yes, we have a little WhatsApp group chat! We are all such similar ages and into the same things. We are all on the same wavelength and it's been brilliant to share experiences. Everyone is friends!

Q Asha has had some great storylines over the years, and now this comes along. How does it feel to be given such hard-hitting stories to tell?

TG I've been in the show for nearly 12 years now. I think it's great to be given the opportunity. I'm quite proud of myself, I'd done no acting before Coronation Street so it was a test to see if I could do it, and to see if this was for me! Before the skin lighting storyline, Asha had only really been involved in Sunita’s death. The skin bleaching storyline gave me the push as an actor, learning about the issues and take a deep dive into the character.

Q Asha and Dev have a strong on-screen relationship. Off-screen are you close to Jimmi (Harshikin - Dev) and does he ever give you fatherly advice?

TG Yes, it's been 12 years so as he’s playing my Dad, he does come across like that. He is brilliant, he will ring me, take us out to lunch, and tell me he is proud of me and has helped me along the way

***

Tanisha has played Asha Alahan for 12 years! and has been at the centre of a skin bleaching storyline and a sexting ordeal plot. Both plots contained Corey, and Kelly to some extent, so could this be Asha’s ultimate revenge?
