Yet recently there seems to be something missing from a lot of them. Can it be true that the Weatherfield women of 2013 are lacking the grit, determination and feistiness of the late great Elsie, Ena and Annie? Probably, to a certain extent. However this isn't setting out to be a negative post.
There are still some wonderful Weatherfield ladies on our screens and I want to celebrate some of their best bits.
Let's kick off with the magnificent Deirdre Barlow. Deirdre was a down in the dumps character for a good long period, constantly chasing after daughter Tracy and defending even her very worst crimes. Recently though she has enjoyed something of a rather glorious renaissance. Yes, Deirdre is funny again. Yes, Deirdre is smacking Tracy down and putting her in her place again. We do love Deirdre and long may she reign at number one Coronation Street!
However, what I want to know is what is your favourite Deirdre moment? It could be anything from the last forty bespectacled years. From her longstanding partnership with Ken to the fabulous mother/daughter relationship with the late lamented Blanche.
What about her high profile storylines. Who could forget that devious tie seller John Lindsay? All together now: "I didn't do any of it!" The attention grabbing Ken, Mike and Deirdre love triangle? What about her fling with the doomed Samir? Or even the Devster...maybe not!
It could be her sexy specs or her wondrous 1980s perm. Who could forget that? Then there are the little details like the harmonica playing in the Rovers and her eternal love of dodgy pottery.
My own personal favourite Deirdre moment has to be seeing that Wendy Flamin' Crozier off not just once, but twice! Corrie at its finest!So that's my favourite Deirdre moment, what's yours?

For me, the classic Deirdre moments are the numerous times she would sob: "Oh Ken - I've been such a fool"

LOL! It's been said quite a few times.
My fave Deirdre storyline was her trip to Morroco & bringing Samir home. While Samir was "a bit of the exotic" the character was cool. The dynamic between Deirdre, Samir, & Teenager Tracey, was interesting, then throw in the curiosity of and the few bigotted opinions of the other "Streeters", equals one of the best storylines. IMHO.

To me, Deirdre's selection of chain belts is just as important as her glasses in terms of her characterization. Loved it when they were recently discussed by Deirdre and Eileen when they were getting drunk together! Love her put-downs, her naivety when it comes to her own pottery, and the trusty stuffed marrow recipe that makes regular appearances. Looking forward to her teaming up with Liz again.-NN
I don't think we've even started to see Deirdre's best bits if the writers continue to give her wonderful scenes. It just shows that the writing can turn around a character. True, some characters are played by dismal actors and would never benefit from good writing but Deirdre's not one of them. It's quite realistic, too, that Deirdre should have come out of her shell now that she's (temporarily) on her own. Many widows, for example, are suddenly reborn even after a very happy marriage. Can't wait to see the Deirdre and Liz double act.
I love those belts too! And long may she continue to wear them! It will be great to see Deirdre and Liz interacting again over a few glasses of red :)
I have to agree Frosty, Anne Kirkbride has been quite superb in recent weeks. I just wish we got to see more of her - the writers need to give her a strong storyline of her own.
I sometimes wonder what it would be like if Samir hadn't been killed - would they still be together?
I'm still trying to erase the image of Deirdre and Dev from my mind, so I'm thrilled to see what she's become as of late. You have got to give credit to a woman who raised a child like Tracy and can still show her face!
I love the bit when Deirdre was crying while saying I didn't do it lol
