When I first started watching Corrie properly, back in 2004, I was drawn in by how all the characters reacted to their local shop being blown up, and how it affected everyone, and I've watched nearly every episode since then. Going further back than that, I have watched Corrie since I was a kid, I grew up with those opening titles (pictured) with the roof tops, the cat and the rows of terraces. Growing up, I always related Coronation Street to being in Manchester, or somewhere in a nearby town, because all the characters in the show were recognisable as my neighbours - heck, we had a Les on our street, and he was just as rough as Les Battersby, we had an Emily Bishop, we had the nasty neighbour, the gossip, and we even had a convinience store owner called Alf!
My point is, I love Coronation Street, because it's the street I grew up on, the street where I lived.

Lovely, really lovely.
Nobody ever got blisters for taking their minds, hearts or souls for a walk down those cobbles.
As for the storylines, we've sympathised, eulogised and either wanted to punch or hug someone along the way.
Good eggs are few and far between, everyone has had a motive for something at some point - be it an ilicit affair or the need for a loaf of bread. Murderous thoughts, plots to kill - plans to bring new life and give birth - all have and shall continue to happen.
We see people we're familiar with on a regular basis and people we've yet to come to terms with.
So much happens yet, if it didn't, how would we ever cope with some of lifes stumbling blocks?

We've all lived there at some point. And the testament to it all is that we'll continue to live there.
If life was perfect, we wouldn't have Coronation Street.
Yes indeed. Oddly enough I grew up in pretty much the total opposite (wilds of Scotland) but when I started watching Corrie as an adult I loved it - the characters are universal. Here's hoping they don't change that by airbrushing out all the good bits.

Well the world is full of "old and ugly people" as someone has so charmingly put it and whoever said it will be old and ugly themselves not so far away!

Great post! I'm 18 and have been watching Corrie since 2001, and I love it for the same resons as you.
Nice blog there Chewy. I'm 23, and I think it's 'uncool' to like any British soap, but I just don't care for these American series...
I'm 21 and I've been watching since 1996!
I'm 20 and love Corrie and i don't care who knows it. It's an amazing British Stalwart and i don't know what British TV would be like without it - a duller place certainly.
