The official Coronation Street site has revealed that not only will Becky McDonald's sister join the soap but the character, in her teens, will have a three-year-old son.
Corrie producers are currently looking for an actress to play Becky's sister and the site says they haven't ruled out seeing Grace, the younger sister of actress Katherine Kelly, who plays Becky, for the part.
The character has yet be named and ITV promises she'll be no shrinking violet.

Wow, they're very much lookalikes. Her sister is going to play a teenager? I don't know how old she is, but in that picture like we have she sure doesn't look like one! Should be interesting though.
She's about 24. Take my word for it.
Must say I'm curious as to why "Becky" is seemingly being groomed as a major character. It seems to me these days there's an awful lot of Katherine Kelly in the press, and I found it odd that she was one of the spokes-people in "Goodbye Blanche". I find myself being annoyed with Becky's behaviour an awful lot, particularly in the adoption story. I suppose that's a good sign of adept acting and writing. Anyone else wonder about Becky's high profile?
Yes, I do. I've never taken to Becky as a character, and find her annoying to watch, to the extent I almost want to switch off. She was great at the start as a horrible thief, but I really can't be doing with her in the Rovers married to Steve. It's total overkill. Couldn't stand all the wedding carry-on, and now this adoption rubbish is looking to be even worse with loads of whining and moaning. It's not Katherine Kelly's fault - it's the character she plays. I'm guessing other viewers must really be keen on her though, else she wouldn't be so centre stage.
Generally I think Becky is a very good character who we've seen change and grow believably. Sometimes her behaviour does grate, but usually when she's out of order there's a reason for it, often something to do with her past, like the other night when she explained to Steve what it was always like when she was young and "social would come round" etc. I love her relationship with "Royston" and "Hales". I like that the character, like David, has depth and complexity, but I don't like it when she's completely OTT. I absolutely HATED the episode when she got drunk and the wedding couldn't go ahead, for example. I agree that on occasions such as this the writing is mostly to blame. Katherine Kelly is very good.
David Platt is one of my favourite characters now - for ages, I couldn't stand him! but he seems to have mellowed out a lot and there's a lot more humour/humanity about him - his relationship with Graeme etc. Maybe Becky will kind of gel a bit more as well, in time - I hope!! I find her far too gushy just now, and okay she had a tough upbringing, but so did many on the Street, and they don't whine on hysterically like Becky does. I just think it's a bit overdone.
Interesting! I still can't understand why she is becoming such a high profile character. I agree with you both that her personality has changed a great deal from the start, but it's like they (TPTB) seem to be wanting Becky to be a top hierarchy character like Annie Walker, or Elsie Tanner, or Bet Lynch. I have no complaints with Katherine Kelly's acting, I just can't see the character Becky being that kind of iconic character.
I don't really get why they're bringing in family now for Becky. She's got lots of characters to bounce off, the McDs and punters at the Rovers and teh Croppers. Maybe a little later on it'd be nice to explore her background but i think it'd much more worthwhile bringing in Carla's elusive brother.
What kind of parents call a baby Grace Kelly?
That's verging on child abuse. How could she ever live up to it?
I like Becky's character (though agree she's overused) but I still don't quite buy the two of them, Becky and Stevie Mac, as a couple. It just doesn't feel right, perhaps because Steve literally seemed to wake up one day and say "I love Becky!"
Every industry including show biz has got its share of nepotism, favoritism... nothing against the actress -- I quite enjoy her, but I agree that she's overused to the expense of many other characters who are under-used. This is the writers/producers/mucky mucks at Corrie's fault. I think for this kind of TV series, a nice ensemble is best where the emphasis is rotated and characters who are changing get a chance to "breathe" and morph both in the forefront and also in the background... perhaps it takes the writers and story editors more work and more talent, but I think they're up to it or can be... they just have to do it. The audiences just have to demand it...
Agree with posters that I like Becky as a character in small doses but the powers that be seem to get certain characters as favourites and totally over expose them so the viewers begin to dislike them, Antony Cotton as Sean as a prime example a couple of years ago.
I am bored with the mouthy gobby teenager character as well and dont particularly want to see Becky's "sister". Corrie is becomiing too much like EE of late IMO.
It's been very much a hallmark of the outgoing producer that she brings in a new character, builds them, then suddenly they are shoe-horned into every other scene until we get sick of them. It happened with Michelle, it certainly happened with Sean, and now it's Becky's turn.
Personally, I think she would have been better as a machinist in the factory, and should never have become Steve's wife. As it is she is so-over used that I can't stand her. And the thought of a sister with similar traits is too awful to contemplate.
