Victoria Ekanoye interview: Should Angie trust Jude again?

How does Angie feel about Jude now he’s training to be a paramedic, has it had the desired effect he hoped for and drawn her back towards him?
It’s not necessarily that he’s training to be a paramedic, it’s the fact that he’s doing something with his life and he feels real. It feels like there’s no more deceit and he’s finally manning up which is what she wants because she’s had to wear the trousers for so long. What she wants more than anything is that family unit and she’s hoping that this could turn things around. It’s not about the job, it’s about him showing initiative and working to keep the family unit together which is her priority.

So is Angie starting to thaw towards Jude, could the marriage be saved?
Yes I think she’s looking at him in ways she used to look at him before all this started. Drive, ambition, passion are attractive qualities, together with the fact that he’s a great dad to George. Angie wonders maybe this is the missing piece of the puzzle and despite how much he’s hurt her maybe they can build on this and get the trust back. It looks like he’s willing to make a change so maybe there is a way forward. There was a time when Angie was madly in love with Jude and those feelings are still there if she can find them again.

Angie went on a date with someone else last week, is that really what she wants?
I think the date was a knee jerk reaction, her trying to kid herself that she can plaster over everything and move on. But ultimately it was never going to end well, she’s still emotionally attached to Jude and they haven’t resolved anything in their marriage.

With her feelings for Jude reignited, how would she feel if she found out he’d been lying to her again?
I think that would be the end for Angie, everybody makes mistakes and there are certain things you can forgive but I think if she found out he was lying again there wouldn’t be any way back. He saw the consequences of his actions the first time and after they talked it out if he chose to do the same thing again it would show he had no intention of changing. She made a lot of sacrifices for Jude by moving to Weatherfield and he seems to have made none. If she finds out he’s been lying again it would be the final blow.

Mary has been very blinkered about Jude, how do you think she would feel if the scales were to fall from her eyes? Could Angie be there to support Mary?
I think if Mary is to find out about Jude’s lies it could impact on Mary more than Angie. Angie’s dealt with this before and would have to accept this is just who he is whereas Mary still has her rose tinted glasses on. Mary’s only just got her son back, and the family unit, and she wants everything to be perfect. I think Angie’s heart would really go out to Mary.

Is there a darker side to Jude, does Angie really know what he’s capable of?
I think sometimes she wonders 'who is this man I married, he lied so easily every single day for two years, do I really know him?' He’s not the man she thought she married, for this to work they would have to go back to scratch and start again. I don’t think she really knows who he is or what he’s capable of.

When Jude wins the Good Samaritan Award Angie is still oblivious to his lies, is she proud of him?
She’s so proud and elated that despite what her idiot husband has done look at what he’s achieved, he saved a life and that’s a massive deal. He’s turning things around, training in such a worthwhile job, and on top of how good he is with George it just makes Angie think that everything is falling back into place. It’s a really big deal for her.

Have you enjoyed working on this story and exploring Jude and Angie’s marriage and what makes them tick?
Once the trust is broken it’s really difficult to fix, I don’t know how Angie is still there but one of the things I’ve loved is playing against how I would act naturally. She’s very bitter and angry at times and that’s never how I would be, it doesn’t solve anything. Sometimes I dislike Angie and that’s what makes her great to play. Yes she can be hard at times but I think it’s self preservation. I love working with Patti and Paddy and having the chance to flesh out the characters. We did the comedy section with Jude’s fake workmates which was hilarious so then to also get to play the drama and the heartache has been really good.

Victoria Eckanoye on joining Corrie and singing Whitney Houston

Victoria Ekanoye, who plays Angie in Coronation Street, was interviewed on ITV's Loose Women where she came over as a truly lovely lady.

She was there to talk about her current storyline on Corrie which sees Angie at a loss as to what to do with her feckless husband Jude... who has turned out to be a serial liar.

Victoria says that her mum Candy is a massive fan of Corrie and Candy was in the Loose Women audience watching her daughter on stage. Victoris said that she didn't tell her mum when she went for the audition at ITV because her mum was such a big fan of the show. She called her afterwards to tell her she'd got the job and her mum screamed and cried.

She says she's still in shock at working on Corrie as it is such an institution and all her family watch it. "You grow up watching it and all these characters and then the next minute, you're in there with them. It's very surreal."

As for Jude and Angie's storyline, she says she's sworn to secrecy on whether the couple stay together, but she does reveal that Jude's lying ways are not quite over and done with yet.

She praised Patti Clare, who plays Mary in the show, saying she is witty, clever and sharp and said she feels honoured that Corrie gave her a high-profile post-natal depression storyline so early on after she joined the show too.

You can watch the full interview from Loose Women on the ITV Hub here.

Victoria Ekanoye: Jude is not the man for Angie

Why does Angie feel like she is done with the relationship?
It is the end now, she is exhausted from trying and feeling that no matter what she does she doesn’t feel like she should feel towards her husband. She feels betrayed and also a little bit stupid because is a smart woman and should have known better.

Is she aware of Mary’s intentions of wanting them to stay together?
No not at the moment but she has brought a baby in to Mary’s life so the guilt is quite heavy on her because it’s not just Jude she is breaking up with, it’s Mary and the family unit too. But she doesn’t see the vow renewal coming at all.

Why do you think she hasn’t suspected that Jude is planning something behind her back?
She doesn’t realise how deluded and in denial Jude is at all. So this is why it comes as such a massive blow to her. It’s almost like she is being railroaded and forced to stay within a relationship that she doesn’t want to be in... it’s scary!

What’s Angie’s first thoughts when Jude surprises her with a romantic meal?
She did love him and there is that attraction to that extent but it’s done for her. Even if she could forgive the fact that he lied back then and understand the reason why he did, it’s the fact that he is still lying. Is he ever going to stop?

How frustrated is she that he is avoiding talking to her?
In a relationship that is one of the worst things. He has to understand that Angie is hurt and upset and he is acting like he doesn’t want to try to help the situation. She thinks that basically Jude is not ready to accept it’s the end so she has no idea what he is planning.

Why does Angie feel the need to go along with keeping quiet about their break-up?
She wants to break away but as kindly as possible, never in a million years does she think it’s going to be a vow renewal because she just can’t believe that he would be so stupid to think that that would be the next step after everything.

Angie and Mary had a rocky beginning but do you think that if she could turn to her for support things would be different?
Angie and Mary would make a great team it’s just that there is this obstacle and the sad thing is that the obstacle is Angie’s husband and Mary’s son.

How do you think Angie is going to react when she realises what Jude has planned?
She won’t be angry with Mary because she will just think that is Mary being Mary and ultimately like any mother would, Mary just wants her son to be happy. But to Jude I think she will feel utter rage because it is entrapment. All of it is under false pretence and over nothing, they’ve broken up!

Do you think she should be worried about the lengths that Jude will go to?
It’s really difficult for her to wrap her head around because that is the father of her child and her husband so it’s a real myriad of emotions that she is going through.

What advice would you give to Angie?
Get out! He is not the man for you, let him go.

Victoria Ekaynoye: "I used to pretend I was on Corrie!"

Inside Soap magazine have the first of their two bumper double issues in the shops now.  It's well worth getting. I spent most of yesterday reading mine and finding out what was going to happen in not just the soaps, but the television schedule up to the week before Christmas too.

And in the double edition of the magazine this week, there's a great interview with Victoria Ekanoye, who plays Angie Appleton in Coronation Street.

Victoria says that she's loved Corrie ever since she was a kid. "I used to pretend I was in it," she says. "I love singing and I always used to make everything into a musical, so I'd do these Corrie musicals and make my mum watch. I'd play different roles but would always gravitate towards Bet Lynch, she was iconic."

Victoria also says that her mum is a huge Corrie fan and Mary is her mum's favourite character. Victoria says: "I'm like 'mum, you do know I'm in Corrie too, right?'

It's a good interview as it's all based around questions sent in by fans for Victoria to answer. You can read the full interview in this week's bumper double festive edition of Inside Soap magazine.

Victoria Ekanoye: Angie and Mary, the mother-in-law from hell

Angie and Jude go house hunting, are they looking for a permanent move in Weatherfield?

They might be! At the moment they are staying with Norris and it’s a little bit cramped as you can imagine! And also, in the back of Angie’s mind, she wants to get her own place because at Norris’s, Mary can turn up at any time, unannounced, whereas she would have to ask if she wanted to come round to their own place.

How hard has it been for Angie having to share Jude and George with Mary?

Angie wants George to have his grandma around and for Jude to have his mum and for that all to be quite harmonious but it is also her first baby and she is missing out on all these important moments because Mary is constantly interrupting, in the way or taking over. It’s causing a rift between Jude and Angie because it's Jude’s mum but Angie feels like he has only just met this woman and Jude’s loyalty and priority should be with her and George.

What happens when Angie and Jude get to the hospital?

The baby is really sick and even the professionals don't know at this point what’s wrong. Mary is the common denominator - every time he is with her he gets sick. Someone looking from the outside in would deduce that she is the catalyst so that Angie thinks this isn’t really that far fetched. Also, the fact that she has moved away from her amazing life in South Africa makes her even more keen for it to be Mary’s fault because then maybe she will get her old life, her son and her husband back.

What’s Angie’s reaction when the doctor tells her and Jude that George often flares up whenever he spends time with Mary?

Angie feels justified in what she has been feeling. This has caused a rift between Jude and Angie so now she has a professional telling her that this is weird she thinks, “I am not going crazy, I told you,” hoping that Jude will understand and agree.

This causes Jude and Angie to row about Mary, what happens next?

As far as they know, Mary isn’t even around. The baby is being looked after in the baby room and they are arguing because as much as Jude probably does see the logic to Angie’s reasoning, it is still his mum. They are arguing so much and suddenly the alarm goes off and they realise that it’s the baby room. They run over and there are all these doctors rushing in to try and help the baby and Mary comes out.

When Mary is ushered out whilst the doctors tend to George, what’s Angie’s first thoughts?

‘Get away from my child!’ She has a lioness approach to it; primitive, very visceral. She is so angry. Something Mary is doing is hurting her baby and even in hospital he is not safe from her.

What do Jude and Angie decide to do?

Whatever it is, Mary is the danger so Angie wants to eliminate her from her baby’s life because what is paramount is George's health.

What’s the best thing about working with Patti Clare?

Patti makes my job really easy. She makes me hope that my mother in law is not like Mary which is brilliant! But I would be so privileged to have a mother in law like Patti. She’s very funny and smart, she’s got a really good energy. She’s a good egg.

What reaction have viewers had about Angie so far?

There’s been a mix actually which I was surprised about because I just assumed that, because Mary is such a well loved character and Patti is such a brilliant actress, everyone is going to hate Angie from the off. I get it though; it’s in the spirit of the show and if it starts conversation that means people care.  Every now and again people are picking up that there is something going on with Angie, they can’t put their finger on it yet but it’s nice. People think it’s great to have a new dimension to Mary’s storyline.

New character Angie Appleton: "She's a warrior woman!"

Next week on Coronation Street we'll see Mary's son Jude return to the show. And with him, he brings his wife Angie and their son.  Angie will be played by Victoria Ekanoye and you can read more about her here.

In an interview with Metro online, Victoria speaks about joining Coronation Street and what lies ahead for Mary's new family in Weatherfield.

Victoria says that Angie is "a warrior woman".  She says: "She's quite feisty and opinionated – and a little sarcastic! She really sticks up for what she believes in and isn’t fooled by anyone – but at the same time, she is very loving too. She does work and since becoming a mum, she misses that side of things and is eager to get back to that normality, but at the same time, she adores her baby and husband, she loves the family aspect."

As a huge Coronation Street fan, Victoria said that she screamed with her mum when she heard she'd been given the role. "I was born up here and it’s an institution and has been for so long with all my family and friends so it’s so surreal to sit in the Rovers and look at these faces I saw on television as a child. I feel like all the hard work has really paid off because I couldn’t wish for it to be any better.
Also, the fanbase is incredible and the demographic is huge – I can’t quite believe my luck!

"My mum is so excited – she has actually organised a party for next weekend! She’s invited about 40 or 50 people so I have no idea where everyone is going to sit but she is going to play the episode during the party! It’s going to be surreal but I am really looking forward to seeing it."

Victoria Ekanoye joins Coronation Street

Victoria Ekanoye will be joining Coronation Street next week as Mary's daughter-in-law Angie Appleton.

Victoria is best known for her television acting role as Rachel in The Royals. She has also appeared on stage in The Lion King and The Blues Brothers. And her special skill? She can eat fire. Yup, it's listed on her Spotlight CV that she's a fire eater!

It also says she's signed up to Coronation Street as a "regular character" which I do hope will mean that Mary's son and his family will be staying on the street.

Angie Appleton is the wife of Mary's son Jude and the mother to Mary's grandchild.
