Coronation Street Blog visits the Weatherfield garden

If you're in the Southport area, do pop along to the Southport Flower Show before it ends on Sunday this weekend.  Two of our intrepid reporters - Nikki and John Beresford - went along to the Southport Flower Show today to have a look at the Coronation Street themed garden.

Here's the report from Nikki and John, who also had the pleasure of meeting Corrie cast members David Neilson and Patti Claire - who play Roy and Mary.  All photos on this blog post are those taken at the Flower Show today by Nikki and John.

And so, over to John:

"The brief summer interlude that had surprised us earlier this week gave way to yet more rain today, perhaps in honour of Weatherfield's visit to the Southport Flower Show.  Coronation Street stars David Neilson (Roy Cropper) and Patti Clare (Mary Taylor) braved the inclement weather to visit the Weatherfield-themed show garden, created by award-winning designer Chris Ashcroft.

The garden features a Rovers Return pergola, under which visitors were gleefully taking turns to be photographed sinking a pint of Newton & Ridley's at the bar, and the famous chimney pots seen in the Street’s opening credits since 1960. The pergola is creatively balanced by a gazebo on the other side of the garden, under which is set a comfy sofa (supplied by Coronation Street sponsor Harveys) for visitors to take the weight off their feet, although very few braved the stares of onlookers to do so!

David Nielson said he was: "Looking forward to seeing the flower show as nature cannot be hurried and in today's modern, frantic world it does you good to escape into the calm of being surrounded by nature and this lovely relaxing environment." The attention of many devoted Coronation Street fans desperate to grab a photo opportunity meant that, for David at least, today's garden visit was perhaps not such a calm environment as he had hoped, but both he and Patti were clearly delighted to meet the many fans who had turned up to see both them and the garden.

Knowing our readers' love of insider gossip, I asked Patti whether we had seen the last of the controversial storyline concerning her character Mary's designs on Roy. Choosing her words very careful, Patti replied that the story would continue to play out for some time yet, but perhaps not in the way we all expect. Read into that what you will! She added that in a related story, Mary is about to offer help to a friend, with predictably catastrophic (and no doubt hilarious) results.

The Southport Flower Show continues until Sunday 19 August.

Sally Dynevor opens Corrie garden at Southport Flower Show

As reported a few days ago here on the Coronation Street Blog, there's a Corrie garden at this year's Southport Flower Show.  Sally Dynevor, who plays Sally Webster on Coronation Street, launched the garden yesterday ahead of the main festival’s opening today.

The garden features recreations of the Rovers Return and the Coronation Street road sign as well as chimney pots as seen in the show’s opening credits.

Sally, who arrived at Southport’s Victoria Park yesterday afternoon, said: “It looks great – I love the idea of the bar in the middle of all the flowers. Southport is lucky to have such a great show. I think my character would absolutely love it and take tips back to her own garden – Sophie would come if her mum asked her, while Rosie would be really bored but would want to come in case there’s any nice garden designers to meet!”

Well, that's what Sally thinks - but what do we think here on the Coronation Street Blog about the Corrie themed garden? Tune in after Friday this week when two of our Bloggers are heading to the Southport Flower Show to report back on the Corrie garden exclusively for us.  With a bit of luck, they'll also get photos of Corrie cast members David Neilson and Patti Clare, who play Roy and Mary, as they'll also be at the Flower Show on Friday.

Hmm... wonder if there's any Coronation Street roses in that garden then?

Coronation Street comes to the Southport Flower Show

Coronation Street has a seaside outing this summer as the nation’s favourite soap is celebrated at the Southport Flower Show.

A Weatherfield-themed show garden will be among the range of attractions enjoyed by more than 80,000 visitors at the festival in August.

The garden, created by award-winning designer Chris Ashcroft, features a Rovers Return pergola and the famous chimney pots seen in the Street’s opening credits since 1960.

There is also a comfy sofa supplied by Coronation Street sponsor Harveys for visitors to take the weight off their feet as they take in the view.

Regular viewers have seen the famous cobbled street adorned with floral displays in recent weeks as residents have gone head-to-head in the Weatherfield in Bloom competition. But this is the first time that the soap has been celebrated with a show garden at Southport.

Two Street favourites David Neilson (Roy Cropper) and Pattie Claire (Mary Taylor) will be touring the show garden and meeting visitors on Friday 17 August.

Southport Flower Show Chief Executive David Jackson said:  “Celebrating the North’s favourite street at the North’s favourite garden show will be a big hit with visitors and hopefully encourage everyone to have a go at gardening.”

Advance tickets cost just £16 per person. For more up to date information on the show, celebrity announcements, details on how to enter the many competitions, and ticket bookings visit www.southportflowershow.co.uk.
