Cruising in the Canaries with Corrie's Fred, I say, Fred

Fancy a cruising holiday with Fred Elliott, I say, Fred? Course, you do, right?

John Savident, who played the larger-than-life butcher Fred Elliott in Coronation Street joins  an all-star cast of television and radio celebrities on a cruise to the Canary Islands and Madeira next month.

The October 14 cruise will have soap stars past and present from EastEnders, Coronation Street and Emmerdale onboard.

During the 15-night cruise there will be plenty of opportunities to meet stars and to hear stories of behind-the-scenes incidents, both funny and disastrous.

Mike Hall, CMV's Head of Marketing, said: "This is a rare opportunity to cruise with a number of Britain's favourite soap characters. "Passengers can enjoy exciting talks, amusing tales from behind the camera and fascinating personal life stories - all in addition to a great variety of interesting and attractive ports of call."

Star guests announced include Derek Martin (Charlie Slater from EastEnders); Laila Morse (‘Mo’ in EastEnders & I`m A Celebrity); Ian Sharrock (Jackie Merrick in Emmerdale); John Savident (Fred Elliott in Coronation Street); Pete Moran (Coronation Street); Allen Mechen (Brookside) Jeffrey Holland & Judy Buxton (Crossroads & On The Up) and Sunny Ormonds (Lilian Bellamy in The Archers).

Top 25 Favourite Corrie Males - No. 8

FRED ELLIOTT (163 VOTES)

Duration: 1994-2006
Played by: John Savident
2012 character poll position (men): 6

The booming butcher who had a tendency to repeat everything he said. I say, repeat everything he said!

Fred was introduced as a member of the Weatherfield Square Dealers and was known to Alf Roberts. He was quickly established as a flirt and enjoyed schmoozing Audrey, much to Alf’s chagrin.

He became popular with viewers and so became a regular by romancing Rita. Only after a few months of courtship he proposed only for her to refuse. But Rita was the first in a long line of women that he would propose to: Maureen Holdsworth, Audrey, Doreen Heavey, Evelyn Sykes, Orchid (who was actually con artist Stacey Hilton), Penny King and Bev Unwin. They all accepted but only Maureen and Evelyn actually married him. But both didn’t last long: Maureen left him after a week and Evelyn turned out to be a bigamist!!

Fond of his scotch and threat, Fred ran the local butcher shop with son Ashley (until 1999 Ashley thought Fred was his uncle). He also bought the Rovers in 2001 only to be bought out by Duggie Ferguson. He regained the pub in 2002 and owned it until his death in 2006.

He was about to embark on a fresh start with fiancĂ©e Bev in 2006 when he collapsed and died in Audrey’s house. He was on the verge of signing the Rovers over to Steve McDonald. Luckily, Ashley gave his blessing and the sale went ahead.

John Savident in A Gala for St George

While the Daily Mail may be a paper I don't usually read - even if it does have wacky photos of Corrie's Ken Barlow - The Guardian is one that I do. And it was there I spotted an ad for A Gala for Saint George, and the president for the night will be John Savident, better known and much missed as Corrie butcher Fred, I say, half a pound of sausage and some chops, please love.
