Gemma’s Big Fat Weatherfield Wedding ! - Corrie Blog Interviews Dolly-Rose Campbell

Next week, Coronation Street is to air Gemma & Chesney's wedding and I cannot wait. For my latest Coronation Street press event, I was pleased to share screen time with one of my favourite Corrie actors, Dolly-Rose Campbell, to talk all about it!

Hi Dolly! - next year will be your 10th anniversary on Corrie. Did you ever imagine being involved in a Corrie wedding, a big-fat Weatherfield Wedding? I was only drafted in for six episodes whilst Paula (Lane - Kylie Platt) was away having a baby, so to be still here all these years later, having lots of fun storylines, is just amazing! Being a bride at a Corrie wedding is a real honour!

Gemma and Chesney have shared a lovely love story - fans were rooting for them to get together. What is it about these two that make such a great pairing?

I think Gemma and Chesney complement each other perfectly. I think he’s the calm side to her more crazy hyper side and he brings her down to earth. He accepts her for who she is, he doesn't want to change her, they are best friends, and they make a great team.

Gemma’s wedding was never going to be a calm or quiet affair. How important is it for her to have a big fancy do? Is it a case of having something to prove?

I don't think it's necessarily about having something to prove, more something she's dreamt of her whole life. It's about having her day, being a bride, and being fabulous. A day for not worrying about money, work, or learning to sign. Just a day for the family and being with the quads.

In the build-up to the wedding, Paul and Gemma have a falling out - she tells him not to come to the wedding. Can you tell us what happens?

In the build-up to the wedding, Paul is being distant and moody. Gemma doesn't understand why, nor why he isn't as excited as she is. It gets to a point where he blows up at her and tells her that nobody is bothered about the wedding, that he’s sick of her, and it really hurts her feelings. She’s angry at him and tells him not to bother coming!

Gemma's Wedding Dress - Behind The Scenes pic!

At the centre of Gemma's big day is the wedding dress. We've just been shown the pictures - it looks amazing! It's huge, orange, and it has a 7-metre train.. with fairy lights. What was it like to wear?

It was actually really comfortable, it was made to fit me, and unlike the pregnancy mould, it wasn’t heavy. I was blown away by it- it's a work of art. The detail that has gone into it is way more than I imagined.

The dress is orange! Where did the idea come from?

The idea came from the Coronation Street costume department designer, Alex. She decided on orange, the most Chesney colour, and we all thought that was hilarious and agreed! The dress was designed by a Manchester drag queen called ‘Liquorice Black’, his Nan is a fan of Corrie so I think that swung it for us. In the Weartherfield universe, Gemma has bought the dress second-hand and Izzy has made all of the alterations.

What was it like when the rest of the cast first saw the dress?

None of the cast saw it before the wedding, apart from Ryan Russell (Michael Bailey) who was having a costume fitting at the same time. Nobody else had seen it in its full glory, and I didn't actually wear it until we were inside the church. Barbara (Knox, Rita Tanner) loved it! and said it was perfect for Gemma, which was surprising.

Gemma has a sign-language interpreter at the wedding and you’ve been learning in real life. Why did you learn it in real life, and how is it going?

I'm halfway through learning level 2 at the minute. It's getting quite difficult, but I do enjoy it. As part of the casting, we wanted a deaf actor to be in the cast as Aled. He is deaf, and the actor's parents are also deaf - it made sense that either myself, Sam (Sam Aston - Chesney) or Jane (Jane Hazelgrove - Bernie Winter) learnt how to sign so we could help him on set, and to make him feel included.

That's brilliant Dolly, and really commendable! Thank you for the chat.

We are long overdue for a Coronation Street wedding, and this is a big one to look forward to! The dress is 2 metres wide, has a 7-metre long train, and fairy lights, and was designed by a Ru Paul's Drag Race designer. A mini-skirt was also made, due to the camera's struggling to get the huge dress all in the shot! We also get to see Billy do some archdeacon stuff, which is also long overdue.

Watch Coronation Street next week to see Gemma & Chesney’s Big Fat Weatherfield Wedding.

The wedding dress will be available to view at the newly opened Coronation Street Experience.

Dolly-Rose Campbell becomes ambassador for Manchester Pride

Dolly-Rose Campbell, who plays Gemma Winter in Coronation Street, has been named as one of the new ambassadors for Manchester Pride.

She said on Twitter: 'I have been coming to pride for over a decade now. The love and acceptance shown by the people of Manchester allowed me to accept my bisexuality and be proud of who I am. The work that Manchester Pride does throughout the year to engage with and create opportunities in Manchester’s LGBTQ+ community and beyond makes a huge difference to so many people’s lives.'

Find out more about this year's Manchester Pride, which takes place in the August bank holiday.

And here's Dolly-Rose doing the voiceover for this year's Manchester Pride festival in this short video.

Gemma's Christmas storyline revealed

There's a good interview in this week's Inside Soap magazine with Dolly-Rose Campbell, who plays Gemma Winter in Coronation Street.

The interview is part of Inside Soap magazine awards in which Dolly-Rose won the award for Funniest Female this year.

And Dolly-Rose revealed a little snippet about what might be in store for Gemma this Christmas.

She says: "There's a lot of different stuff happening over Christmas - a blast from the past, which is quite revealing.  It might show us a few different elements of Gemma's character and explain some things about why she's like she is. There's plenty more to come!"

I wonder if it might be Gemma's mum coming into the show?  Who- or what - do you think it might be?

Star of the Week: Gemma Winter

Our Gemma has a heart of gold, doesn’t she? The start of last week was a bad one for Gemma when her boyfriend, Henry, supposedly had a broken arm after a fall in the Rovers. Sadly, things went from bad to worse when Hazza turned out to be faking his injury. Classy.

Poor Gemma was torn. Here was the love of her life begging her to lie to Jenny and Johnny and help him sue them for a big ol’ sum of £17K. Once upon a time, Gemma would’ve jumped at the chance to make some easy money, but she’s a reformed character now. Deep down, she knew the choice was simple. Jenny made the decision slightly easier for her by informing her that they’d already found out posh Henry’s somewhat flawed plan. Alas I’ll miss George Banks as Henry; up until now I’ve really enjoyed the character.

After Gemma told him to do one, it didn’t take her long to bounce back to her usual, upbeat self. Bless her heart, she was sure that Liz was missing Mike and was dead-set on getting them back together. Which, while she may not have listened to what Liz was saying, was actually really quite sweet.

And can we just appreciate how amazing Dolly-Rose Campbell was last week? She’s always incredible but I was blown away by Monday’s episode.

Who’s your star of the week this week?

Dolly-Rose Campbell dresses up as Rovers' barmaids

With thanks to the Coronation Street publicity team for sharing these photographs with us.

It's Dolly-Rose Campbell (Gemma Winter) dressed up to look like Vera Duckworth.

The photoshoot appeared in last week's TV Times.

And as well as Vera, Dolly-Rose also glammed it up as Racquel Watts and even as Bet Lynch too!

Dolly Rose Campbell interview: Chesney, Henry and The Rovers Return

Have Gemma and Chesney made up since their fall out?

Chesney is one of her best friends and even though things haven’t been great between them since Gemma’s fling with Tyrone because he struggled to forgive her, when he sees that she is upset he manages to put that aside and comfort her over the terrible news that Henry has got engaged.

Has she ever thought of Ches as anything other than a friend?

Yes it did go through her mind after she broke up with Henry but when Fiz said that he seemed embarrassed at the idea Gemma took that to mean that he wasn’t interested. Other people can see that they would make a good pairing but for many different reasons it hasn’t happened. There is always an obstacle in the way.

Does Cathy think they should be together?

Yes Cathy knows that they are destined to be together and she wants to give it a helping hand along the way.

When Chesney asks her to go out for lunch what does she think?

She doesn’t read anything into it at all, she just thinks he is being a mate and he is trying to cheer her up and she actually forgets about the lunch and Cathy has to remind her. She finds Gemma having a pie and tells her she should be out with Chesney.

Is she genuinely upset about Henry?

Yes she had kept her hopes up because he had been in touch with her all this time, she did still dare to think that something might happen between them. She knew it started out as a bet but she does want to believe that he has feelings for her. But Gemma doesn’t have an awful lot of confidence so to hear he has got engaged was a real blow for her.

Has this proved to her yet again that she doesn’t deserve anything good?

Yes she had let herself believe that she maybe was worthy of being with someone like him and now he has gone for a posh girl she feels stupid and thinks she should have realised that of course he would end up with one of his own kind.

What happens when he comes in to the restaurant?

Chesney is just at the point where he is about to tell Gemma how he feels and that he wants the lunch meet up to be a date when Henry arrives out of the blue.

Do you think the viewers will be rooting for Chesney?

Yes I do, I know from the reaction I get in the street that they will be shouting at their TV for Chesney to tell Gemma how he feels and not let Henry muscle back in. There are a lot of people who would like to see Gemma and Chesney get together. That is the question that I am asked the most when I am out and about.

Would you like them to get together?

I wouldn’t want it to happen too soon as it is fun having the will they won’t they story, it is interesting to keep it bubbling for now and the viewers have enjoyed the Henry Gemma storyline.

What does Henry say?

He tells her his parents had forced him to get engaged and he wasn't happy about it as he is still in love with Gemma. She isn’t sure whether to believe him and ends up leaving the Bistro and tells him to get lost but Henry wants to prove that he is telling the truth and that he does care for her.

What does he do to try and make her believe him?

In the end he tries to impress her with the grand romantic gesture of offering to buy the Rovers for them both to run as a business.

Do you think that might convince her?

I think it could, not out of being materialistic but just out of realising that if he is willing to do that he must care. But she is terrified of being let down again.

What do her friends think?

Cathy and Chesney say that they aren’t sure he can be trusted after everything that has happened and that really does make her scared. She is really torn and doesn’t know what to do. She doesn’t want to hear it from them even though she is thinking it herself.

Does she think this could be the happy ending to her Cinderella story?

It would be a new start for her, going into business doing something that she really enjoys with a man like Henry at her side. She could never have dreamed that could happen to her.

Do you think it could work despite the class divide?

I think it would make some very interesting stories if Gemma and Henry got together, it would be a bit like My Fair Lady. I don’t know if she could be changed though, I think she is a bit set in her ways and he does like that she is a bit of a breath of fresh air, she is real and more grounded and completely different to him and not after his money.

Do you think that there is more to Henry than meets the eye?

He didn’t come in with the best intentions regarding Gemma but this grand gesture could show that he does care and he wants to make a life with her. But there is something else going on and she probably should be wary of him.

Did you ever imagine when you joined the show that you would be looking at potentially running the Rovers?

Gemma from the Dog and Gun running the Rovers, no I would never in my wildest dreams think that could happen, even when I got the scripts where they were discussing it I didn't believe it, I was chuffed to bits. Jack and Vera were my favourite landlord and landlady and no one would have ever though they could do it but they did.

Who do you think Gemma should choose?

I don’t have an answer for that, Gemma should always take care of herself and do what is right for her. She is a strong character, she knows who she is that doesn’t mean she can’t be fooled from time to time, she has a big heart. She comes from the wrong side of the tracks and she wants to prove to people that she is as good as the, Rita has put her faith in her and that meant a lot. She looks at other women in the street like Liz and wants to be like that, so to have that opportunity to prove her worth would mean a lot her her. It should be more about that than being defined by what man she chooses.
