Gemma’s Big Fat Weatherfield Wedding ! - Corrie Blog Interviews Dolly-Rose Campbell

Next week, Coronation Street is to air Gemma & Chesney's wedding and I cannot wait. For my latest Coronation Street press event, I was pleased to share screen time with one of my favourite Corrie actors, Dolly-Rose Campbell, to talk all about it!

Hi Dolly! - next year will be your 10th anniversary on Corrie. Did you ever imagine being involved in a Corrie wedding, a big-fat Weatherfield Wedding? I was only drafted in for six episodes whilst Paula (Lane - Kylie Platt) was away having a baby, so to be still here all these years later, having lots of fun storylines, is just amazing! Being a bride at a Corrie wedding is a real honour!

Gemma and Chesney have shared a lovely love story - fans were rooting for them to get together. What is it about these two that make such a great pairing?

I think Gemma and Chesney complement each other perfectly. I think he’s the calm side to her more crazy hyper side and he brings her down to earth. He accepts her for who she is, he doesn't want to change her, they are best friends, and they make a great team.

Gemma’s wedding was never going to be a calm or quiet affair. How important is it for her to have a big fancy do? Is it a case of having something to prove?

I don't think it's necessarily about having something to prove, more something she's dreamt of her whole life. It's about having her day, being a bride, and being fabulous. A day for not worrying about money, work, or learning to sign. Just a day for the family and being with the quads.

In the build-up to the wedding, Paul and Gemma have a falling out - she tells him not to come to the wedding. Can you tell us what happens?

In the build-up to the wedding, Paul is being distant and moody. Gemma doesn't understand why, nor why he isn't as excited as she is. It gets to a point where he blows up at her and tells her that nobody is bothered about the wedding, that he’s sick of her, and it really hurts her feelings. She’s angry at him and tells him not to bother coming!

Gemma's Wedding Dress - Behind The Scenes pic!

At the centre of Gemma's big day is the wedding dress. We've just been shown the pictures - it looks amazing! It's huge, orange, and it has a 7-metre train.. with fairy lights. What was it like to wear?

It was actually really comfortable, it was made to fit me, and unlike the pregnancy mould, it wasn’t heavy. I was blown away by it- it's a work of art. The detail that has gone into it is way more than I imagined.

The dress is orange! Where did the idea come from?

The idea came from the Coronation Street costume department designer, Alex. She decided on orange, the most Chesney colour, and we all thought that was hilarious and agreed! The dress was designed by a Manchester drag queen called ‘Liquorice Black’, his Nan is a fan of Corrie so I think that swung it for us. In the Weartherfield universe, Gemma has bought the dress second-hand and Izzy has made all of the alterations.

What was it like when the rest of the cast first saw the dress?

None of the cast saw it before the wedding, apart from Ryan Russell (Michael Bailey) who was having a costume fitting at the same time. Nobody else had seen it in its full glory, and I didn't actually wear it until we were inside the church. Barbara (Knox, Rita Tanner) loved it! and said it was perfect for Gemma, which was surprising.

Gemma has a sign-language interpreter at the wedding and you’ve been learning in real life. Why did you learn it in real life, and how is it going?

I'm halfway through learning level 2 at the minute. It's getting quite difficult, but I do enjoy it. As part of the casting, we wanted a deaf actor to be in the cast as Aled. He is deaf, and the actor's parents are also deaf - it made sense that either myself, Sam (Sam Aston - Chesney) or Jane (Jane Hazelgrove - Bernie Winter) learnt how to sign so we could help him on set, and to make him feel included.

That's brilliant Dolly, and really commendable! Thank you for the chat.

We are long overdue for a Coronation Street wedding, and this is a big one to look forward to! The dress is 2 metres wide, has a 7-metre long train, and fairy lights, and was designed by a Ru Paul's Drag Race designer. A mini-skirt was also made, due to the camera's struggling to get the huge dress all in the shot! We also get to see Billy do some archdeacon stuff, which is also long overdue.

Watch Coronation Street next week to see Gemma & Chesney’s Big Fat Weatherfield Wedding.

The wedding dress will be available to view at the newly opened Coronation Street Experience.

Coronation Street Episode Review; Weds 4th Dec 8.30 pm

Fall-outs, accusations, shocks, and comedy crisps! - it can only be a Corrie wedding!

Following Michelle's very public humiliation, Ryan and Ali try and accost Robert, only for Robert to confronted by Tyler, asking where Vicky is?

Back on the street, Paul has run out of the community centre, visibly upset at having admitted his abuse to the factory girls.  Later on, the factory girls reciprocate Paul's painful honesty, by having a good gossip about him in the pub!. It serves them right to be caught by Bernie and Gemma until they all realise that Paul is missing!.. for the ad break at least. He soon turns up at Roys Rolls to be greeted by a search party (aka family, factory girls & Billy). Slight panic aside, Paul tells the search party that he's decided to give evidence against Kel and looks towards closure.

Doesn't Ken seem to have recovered very quickly from pneumonia? I mean he's only 80 years old and its winter, but no worry for our Ken, as he's out of the hospital and back supporting Daniel in his grief-stricken solitude. Did he even ask how his Dad was feeling, did he 'eck!  I suppose we can forgive him for being self-absorbed though, albeit completely lost, and unshaven. Even Adam struggles to get Daniel out of the flat to go to Amy's play. He's still languishing in inconsolable grief and watching Sinead on the laptop.

It's still so sad to watch, isn't it? A toughie but one of my 2019 highlights, as Corrie slowly brings the year to a close.

TRACY BARLOW !! (my ultimate corrie female) has also returned from holiday and is quick to get up to speed with the gossip from Steve and Amy. Seb offers the 'Bryan maiden' gig tickets to a bemused Emma and narrowly averts a comedic scalding from her Dad, Steve.  I am soo glad to see Tracy back, but where is Liz? AND if Ken was ill, why didn't Tracy come back from her holiday early? It seems to be a night of returns as the (seldom-seen) Battersby sisters are at the pub offering sincere condolences and commiserations to Michelle. And, as Paul Winter has decided to face his troubles, Summer has decorated the flat, ready for Christmas! We've got Summer getting things ready for Winter! I did chuckle... was it just me?

Back at The Rovers, Tyler confronts Robert with wild accusations about the previous nights' skirmish and heated argument with Vicky. In front of the whole pub, Robert feels cornered by the residents and the wild words are banded around. Is Robert guilty of killing Vicky, or are Michelle and Vicky in cahoots for the ultimate revenge?.

After his second very public attack of the day, Robert sits in his van and has full-on steering wheel rage! It reminds me of when Pat Phelan did the same thing, upon realising that Vinnie had stolen all of their ill-gotten cash.

It's got me thinking...

Is this foreshadowing, is Robert about to be completely fleeced?

Ultimately, I feel there's a big twist in this storyline, that's yet to come...

What did you think to this Wednesdays Corrie? let us know in the comments section.

Coronation Street Episode Review; Weds 4th Dec 7.30 pm

It's the day of reckoning for Robert and Michelle's wedding, but will all go to plan? This cunning, conniving, and conning duo are now (ironically) more suitably matched than ever. A pairing of evil equals in slippery subterfuge. But with Michelle soon to be in sole control of the bistro, is she ready to go that one step further and humiliate Robert at the altar, in front of gathered friends and family?

Awake early, Michelle stumbles upon Robert just returning from a walk by the canal. Dressed in black, mud on boots, and acting shifty. Its all a bit suggestive, isn't it? A red herring, or has Robert done away with Vicky?

Paradoxically, the flurries of young love seem to be flourishing for new couple Emma & Seb.
But why does Seb then rebuff Emma's idea for a date? Is he playing it cool as Eileen suggests? no, he's not. He's got her tickets to see 'Bryan Maiden' - an Iron Maiden tribute act, as a surprise. I think Seb has got the hair to be a rocker but I can't see Emma moshing to 'Run to the Hills'myself?

As December dawns on Weatherfield, Billy and Sean have plans for a festive flat but Paul is triggered by Christmas trees, with memories of Kel's abuse, so Billy decides against it. As sanctimonious as ever, Sean is displeased at the lack of camp decorations! How is Billy managing to live with his new boyfriend and his ex?. Christian, it may be, but a good idea - hardly! With the cops calling him in to view the polaroids, Paul absconds from work. Contemplating in the community garden about giving evidence, David soon puts his mind at rest. Paul then decides its time to tell the factory staff of why he's absent and requesting days off.

Daniel isn't feeling very festive either. Grieving for Sinead, he immerses himself and little Bertie, in her posthumous video dairies. Is anybody else missing Sinead? I genuinely am!

At Church, my fave soap vicar (big Billy fan me), is at the helm at St Mary's and eager to host his first Weatherfield wedding (fact check - I'm unsure if it is)?
Great to see the vicar back in his cassock! At the altar, Robert gives an impassioned and honest paean in his vows (it's almost a plea, call me cynical) and it looks like the ice queen is about to melt. Fear not though, as Michelle faults not once, (a fine performance from Kym Marsh) and airs all of their dirty laundries, in front of gathered family and friends!

Classic soap wedding. Will they still get married or are this conniving duo finally over?

I'm sure we will find out more in my 8.30 pm episode review, speak in a bit!

I loved Wednesday’s double Corrie so much I watched it again. Backwards.

There’s more to this story than the headline suggests. Kind of.

As if butter wouldn't melt
My cable television provider, who shall remain nameless (it rhymes with Virgin Media) have got into the habit recently of refusing to let me watch my favourite soap on the same day it was broadcast. Last night was such an occasion. To add insult to injury my laptop is broken. Milk and electricity do not mix.

So I got home from work late on Wednesday, settled down on the sofa with a snack, ready to enjoy an hour of classic Corrie on super Wednesday – the day they added an extra sixth episode and it was announced that ITV3 will start showing episodes of Corrie from the 1980s.

I waited, and I waited. Nowt. No Corrie catch up for me. In my desperation I resorted to watching on my trusty, but tiny iPhone. All started well as I peered through bent spectacles, so scratched they are more frosted than a bathroom window. Corrie was just getting juicy as Maria and Eva flailed around in the hotel fountain, a fight so ridiculous Hugh Grant and Colin Firth would have been proud. And then my phone slid off the pillow I was using to hold it up and disappeared down the side of the arm rest. It was stuck. I could hear Eva’s cries, Tyrone’s joking, Kirk’s disappointment. But they were so far away. This was a disaster.

The original fountain fight (Bridget Jones)

Having rescued my phone / mini TV I eventually got through both episodes, gravity yanking my phone into the crevice of my sofa several more times before Johnny and Jenny crossed the factory threshold to blue skies and confusion. I’d made it. Rita was still alive, I was still alive. Wednesdays would never be the same again. But as entertaining as the episodes were, I didn’t feel right. I didn’t feel like I’d got the full sense of how good the night’s Corrie was. I’d have to watch it again. So I did. But backwards.

I like to play around a bit with video editing, and I’ve made several Corrie related films in the past. I remembered that somebody had created a backwards episode of Coronation Street years ago, in an episode that saw Bet Lynch have a catfight in the street with Hilda Ogden. So as I had the general gist of what had happened in Wednesday night’s Corrie, I decided to run some clips through some editing software, with Monday’s buildup included. And this is what happened:

Conclusion? A) it sounds a bit Dutch B) the fountain cat fight is BRUTAL backwards C) Rita's singing is still beautiful and D) I have way too much time on my hands…
