Coronation Street Episode Review Friday 26 July 2024

I have been in two minds over writing this.  Firstly for personal reasons I can see no entertainment value in the gradual decline of an individual's physical state and secondly I honestly do not feel I can do the episode the justice it deserves.  I am not a writer and consequently if you can I would urge you to watch the episode.  Paul plays the song "Oh Happy Day" to tell Billy that the time has come for them to part permanently.  Throughout we hear Paul looking to the future and how Billy, the quads and others will progress in their lives.  Paul has one huge regret - that they have never been to Sitges.

Having said that I am not going to do my usual recapitulation of events - but instead to reflect on the events portrayed.  First up a few words about Debbie Oates.  She has been a writer on t'Street since 2002 and has no doubt been involved in this storyline for a long period.  She had the job tonight of writing the lines we heard in normal conversations and the thought stream of Paul's locked in brain.  For once we are hearing that "somewhere in there" Paul's brain continues to work, continues to resent being shouted at and coming to his conclusion that the time has come.  Some amazing writing to get that balance for the episode.

Director of the episode was Vicky Thomas who has worked with the programme since 2018 and she no doubt had to work out how to piece together the actions as we started in the flat, visited the church for a reminder of the wedding, popped along to see Gemma and the quads, dropping into the Rovers for a reminder that Paul first entered the programme with David as his prison cell mate.  Paul decides that the day has come and without telling him lets Todd know that the time has come.  nuTodd has now erased all memories of earlier Todd and will no doubt have a big surprise today.

Billy (Daniel Brocklebank) of course - running from caring to raging to accepting when Paul reveals his decision, knowing it is too soon and yet knowing that the decision is not his and that he needs to prepare to enable the outcome now that Paul has decided.  He read from Corinthians when they were in the church.  He also initiates a long recall sequence showing very brief excerpts from their love story cut together almost too quickly.

In terms of delivering though second prize goes to Joseph (William of the famous Flanagan family).  Early on he is almost refusing to talk to Paul - preferring to go upstairs and do his homework and not participate in Paul's big day out.  Later when he and three of the quads descend on the flat for the night he talks to Paul telling him that he struggles knowing that the real Paul is still there but just unable to communicate and yet knowing that he wants to do it.  And he reckons he can learn to understand Paul as Billy does.  This changes Paul's mind.

Paul Foreman (Peter Ash) wins first prize however as he gets a big shock of losing his speech, even to the point at which Billy misunderstands him and yet he knows that only Billy can be his interpreter - which more or less makes his decision and he plays the music.  But then he is saved by Joseph who can still hear him and the decision is reversed.  At one point we thought that he had died naturally overnight - but he remains with us for now, although I fear not for long.

I often make the point that it would be nice if we had more of Corrie telling us the simple story of people living their lives in a quiet Weatherfield Street.  However I accept that sometimes there is room for more.  Just over two weeks ago the team delivered the almost two hander with Joel and Lauren and now I feel sorry for that team as another team have now delivered another episode with so much good stuff.  Inevitably only one can win awards and it is therefore regrettable that they came so close together.

And we still have Paul's final story to come.

Coronation Street Episode Review, Wednesday 3rd May, 8 pm

Welcome to another Wednesday Weatherfield round-up and to catch up on the latest goings on, on Coronation Street. It’s the start of a new month, and having done two Corrie press days in two weeks, I can promise that this is a good one - a lot is coming up!

Tonight starts where Monday left off. Paul’s perilous health situation (he’s not telling anybody because more drama is promised) remains hidden from his family, but Dee-dee is trying to use his diagnosis as a mitigating circumstance in court! However, what with being penniless and with Gemma’s wedding coming up, Paul is soon pushed to make another criminal decision with a car theft for Nile. Unluckily, he’s caught in the act by Dee-dee who refuses to turn a blind eye, so Paul decides not to steal it after all. Rather than facing the cops, the lawyer gives him another grilling and tells him to reveal Nile and the car-stealing racket to the cops. Paul then heads over to see Damon in the hope of blackmailing money out of him to cover up for the car ring.

Brian and George’s new friendship based on model-building pulls us back into Corrie's territory of old, it’s twee, it’s unassuming, and kinda like when Sam and Roy play chess together - I love it. I'm hoping Roy gets invited into this group. Tonight, Brian is looking into entering a competition, with George as his right-hand man. Things soon turn sour though, when one of the small parts goes missing!

Meanwhile, this Bistro licensing storyline is pulling all kinds of residents together, and in the middle of it, we have Damon and Sarah's fatal attraction. Women do love a bad boy I guess, and no more so than on this street. It's Adam’s birthday tonight and Sarah is playing happy families until Adam gets wind of some local opposition to the late-night licence intricacies. Damon is soon on the scene, and muscles in on the couple's birthday drink - a menage a trois, indeed. Maria then heads into the Bistro and tells Sarah she's not the only one to have objected - right in the earshot of Nick. Adam is fuming, Damon plays dumb, and Sarah struggles to make amends with her husband, who shows a rare glimpse of Mike Baldwin's DNA when he decides to get stuck into his business dealings instead. I liked that. He tells Nick to go on a charm offensive to win residents over. Outside the factory, Sarah warns Damon off.

Elsewhere in the Platt/Barlow/Metcalfe family drama, Stephen moves his Las Vegas wedding plans forward and starts to make use of Elaine’s (never before mentioned) illness. Tim and Audrey’s benevolence towards the couple only seems to help his cause -Tim’s got his card marked. Audrey's shock is cooled by Elaine’s temperament and she’s soon in tears. It was a surprising unleash of emotion, and tonight's top scene for me! Later on, Elaine tells Stephen that she wants a Weatherfield wedding instead.

In other news, Aaron moves off the street, Amy looks to restart uni life, and Jenny’s hooked up with Owen.

What did you think of tonight’s offering?  I am @rybazoxo if you want to tweet and let me know!

Coronation Street Episode Review, Wednesday 5th April , 8 pm

After a two-week hiatus covering Corrie press days, and manoeuvring my manic day job, I’m pleased to be back on the Corrie episode reviews after a fortnight away, and what a fortnight it's been! Acid attacks, Amy’s anguish, Paul’s plight, Bill Webster's dead, Cerebus going over the rainbow bridge, and all with a plethora of other storylines quietly brewing in the background.

Will Ken's scaffolding ever come down?

Tonight starts at number one with Amy still reeling from Tracy’s policing provocation, she’s now physically struggling to face the outside world, standing in the doorway and shaking with fear. Amy decides to lie and tell her parents it's all been a misunderstanding, in the hope that things will calm down. Tracy tells Adam that she thinks Amy is lying and Abi conveniently overhears, albeit a misinterpretation. Abi relays the gossip to Aaron and the lad displays emotional relief at this change of heart. Aaron’s buoyed by the news and plans a night out until he bumps into Aadi. Aadi is upset at the abuse aimed at Amy, only for Aaron to tell Aadi about Amy’s change of heart.

Summer's fashion sense clashes with Ken's lamp

Summer and Aadi visit Amy to find out what's going on and she tells them it's all been a misunderstanding. Amy is also missing university but not telling anyone. Aadi forgives Aaron and heads to the gig with him, everything looks to be good again for the mechanic. No such thing for Amy though, we witness her having a dream sequence, and her memories of the event are all still very clear. I'm still not a fan of montage music and blurry screens. echoey voices, and such like (it's a Hollyoaks tactic) but if it conveys the message quicker, it's forgiven.

Faye tells Miley about Craig's ridiculous jumper

Craig tries to make good with Miley and Faye by buying her daughter a gift, but Craig turns up with a baseball-themed gift, rather than a basketball, and the slight rift that's been appearing between the couple, since Miley’s return, is slowly getting wider. Craig is visibly jealous of Faye’s co-parenting with Jackson but the couple soon make amends. The pork-scratching analogy was a metaphor for Craig and Faye's stale (and bad-tasting) relationship? I have a feeling this is going to end badly for P.C. Tinker, and at the same time as his Mum leaves Kirk for Marco?

Faye does not like Pork Scratchings

Meanwhile, Paul has decided to leave Dee-Dee’s flat and move in with Billy but still struggles with money worries from Gemma’s wedding and his unpaid loan. Paul's manual dexterity appears to be depleting further. dropping boxes when moving, but he's keen to get back to work. Paul quickly gets a local busboy job at the Bistro but still notices troubling symptoms in his hands. Later, visiting the doctors, Paul's told that he needed referring as his dexterity issues may be a sign of limb-onset MND, a life-limiting non-curable condition.

Later, Paul plans to meet Summer for dinner at Speed Daal, which Bernie turns up at, and Paul isn't feeling in the mood, nor for the bill-paying. Summer asks about his hospital visit, and Paul lies and hides his diagnosis. Spending his first night at the flat, Paul’s awake in sleeplessness as the reality hits home. Hiding his fears from Billy, he breaks down in anguish. All very compelling and important of course, I just wish the Archdeacon would get a smidgen of a storyline relating to his job?

Mary tells Brian she was full of spunk... in her younger days ;)

Elsewhere, Brian’s Italian comedy storyline continues but at least we get screen time from Rita, Audrey, and Mary. Speaking of which, Mary's monologue about her younger days being ''full of spunk'' was tonight's real comedy moment. Dee-dee tells Damon about his upcoming court date, and he’s pleased to see Sarah visit her husband's office. With a bet on the cards, Damon continues to woo the married woman at the Rovers. Dee-dee meets for a drink with Sarah and has noticed her client's flirtations. She gives Sarah a subtle warning.

Well, after two weeks of watching all the episodes in one weekend, it's good to be back on the weekly episode reviews.! What did you think of tonight’s offering?  I am @rybazoxo - tweet to let me know your thoughts.
