The big story this week has been David Platt and the aftermath of his rape by Josh Tucker. David wakes up in Josh’s bed and realises what has happened. He heads home, showers, but doesn’t say a word. Josh comes to the house, telling David it’s what he wanted, but David knows the truth. However, everyone thinks Josh is the best thing since sliced gravy and David can’t handle what’s going on around him. He heads to see his dad Martin and it’s a welcome return of the character after many years away from the show. But even dad Martin can’t get David to open up about the real reason for his visit. Martin’s heading off to a new life in New Zealand and when David returns home to the Platt house he tells Shona that he wants to take Lily and Max and move there with his dad. It’s about as far away from Weatherfield, and Josh, as he can get.

Another member of the Platt clan centre-stage this week has been Gail when Rosemary the clairvoyant tells her she’s got messages from Richard Hillman coming through. Gullible Gail laps it all up, and when Rosemary tells Gail that she’ll rid the Platt clan of the curse which Richard has put upon them all – but it’ll cost – Gail says she’ll pay, of course.

In the back room of the Rovers, Ken gives a French lesson to Leanne, Eva and Toyah after Eva and Toyah lie to Leanne and tell her they’re going to a language class when they were really heading to antenatal.  Leanne is still woefully ignorant of the fact that Eva is up the duff, even though she’s the size of a house. Anyway, Ken gets called in to deliver a French lesson in the back room of the Rovers when Leanne says she wants to tag along.

Sally got her living room wallpapered this week by Tim, who got the wallpaper from Kirk, who got it from someone he knows who’s working in town. What Sally doesn’t know is that her “Italian Frescho” aspirational wallpaper has come from the Weatherfield café. Carla and Michelle have a good giggle at Sally’s mistake, which was rather cruel and out of character for Carla, I felt.

Fiz and Tyrone continue to have problems when Fiz tells him, finally, that Hope is their evil child, not Ruby. But it’s too late, by the time Fiz has told him the truth, Tyrone has already smacked Ruby for being naughty. Fiz is in tears at home with Hope while Tyrone and Ruby move in with Kev.

Finally this week, in an attempt to persuade Michelle’s son Ali to attend Michelle’s wedding, Carla uses her skills on the young doctor to get him to change his mind. She takes him upstairs to Roy’s flat, forgets all about her recent kidney transplant and gets stuck into the red wine before leading him into her room.

And that’s just about that for this week.

This week on Corrie one of the episodes opened with the announcer telling us that it “may contain scenes which viewers might find upsetting” and it ended with “if you’ve been affected by any of these issues…”  

Whatever happened to sitting back, relaxing, enjoying and soaking up a soap? Sigh. 

Another week with too many hospital scenes. Carla, Aidan and Nicola were all in hospital this week. Carla received Aidan’s kidney and in return she told Johnny she’s going to give him her shares of the factory.  Nicola was also wired up to a machine this week in the Weatherfield Ward after complications with her appendix and bowel. Enough, please Corrie. Too many “dramatic” hospital scenes lose any impact they’re supposed to have and fans are losing the will to care.

However, it’s not all been as dismal. There were some lovely scenes in the hospital when Roy went to kiss Carla goodbye as she was wheeled into the operating theatre and instead of planting a kiss on her cheek, Carla turned her head so that Roy had to kiss her full on the lips. And while Carla was under the knife in surgery, Roy and Johnny bonded over their shared love of her too. A nice touch, I thought. 

And at Nicola’s bedside, Phelan sat with tears in his eyes and told Nicola he didn’t want anything to do with her any more after he found out that she’s been harbouring Seb in her flat. He’s a complicated chap, Pat, as all of the best soap villains are.

Elsewhere this week, Billy’s junkie brother Lee turns up with methadone for Billy’s pain. Billy sweats his way through the week, lying to his friends and being a rubbish dad to Summer who is failing at school because of the carer role she’s forced into at home.   When Sarah sees Lee she’s terrified as he was the one who kidnapped her last time he was on the Street. David takes it upon himself to protect his sister and with the help of his new (and only) mate Josh, the two lads bundle Lee into the back of a van and give him a kicking. It’s a nasty storyline this one and it’s going to get darker too.

Meanwhile, with all the focus on the Connor clan this week and their kidney swap storyline, poor Jenny has been feeling left out after Johnny puts his kids first and her second. Jenny walks out of the flat feeling rejected and over a shared couple of cans of beer with Kev Webster, he helps her get a bit of perspective on what’s going on. This was a lovely scene between two old friends, more please.

Steve’s called on to act as referee between his mum and Eileen after they go head to head in a slanging match about Pat Phelan. Liz only wants to warn Eileen against the man she’s married to but Eileen won’t hear a bad word said against him and the two women fight in the pub.

Corrie weekly update - Twisting Peter's Melon and A Sticky Bun

Peter Barlow would like it to be known that he does not still have feelings for Carla Connor. Does not. Got it? Right. And just in case anyone was under the impression that he might still care for her, he denies it left, right and centre. It’s a wonderful subtle joke that threads its way throughout the week after Peter finds out that Carla and Daniel have slept together. He’s jealous but he keeps his feelings to himself, well, that’s what he’s telling himself anyway. We all know different, of course. And when Carla collapses with her kidney problem Peter goes to visit her in hospital. He’s on one side of the bed and Daniel’s on the other. A wonderful scene. 

But Carla in hospital was one of three hospital scenes this week – the others were Aidan Connor and Nicola Thorp. Hospital scenes are supposed to be dramatic, have impact, we’re supposed to care about what’s happening to the character. But when hospital scenes are chucked at us left, right and centre, we stop caring – about the scene, the character… and even, perhaps, ultimately, the show itself?  Please, Kate Oates, give the hospital scenes a rest.   We get it that you like them. Please get it that we don’t want them in every episode, not even every week.

Elsewhere this week, Rana’s parents find out about her affair with Kate. They offer Zeedan a large amount of money to stay with Rana as a married couple, money that Zeedan can invest into his business. It’s a deal that Zeedan takes but Rana spends the week in tears, she can’t half cry that girl.  When Yasmeen finds out what’s happened she tells Rana to pull herself together. “If you’re gay, you’re gay!” Yasmeen is great, she really is. Sadly for Rana she cries in reply: “But I don’t know what I am!”

Over in the Bistro, Chesney overhears Gemma’s fella Henry talking to his posh mate Hugo about Gemma. It becomes clear that Henry’s dating Gemma for a bet and Chesney’s not having it. He tells Gemma what he’s heard and she storms out of the Bistro after tipping food on Henry’s head. But Henry really has developed feelings for Gemma and isn’t going to let her go so easily even though she knows the truth about why he started dating her. And so Henry calls in at the kebab shop to see Gemma but Chesney forbids him and chucks Henry out. Later, Gemma’s quite taken when she hears from Cathy how Chesney defended her honour.

Tim packs to leave Weatherfield, telling Sally that he needs to get Faye away from the evil Phelan. But he spends so much time telling Sally that he’s leaving, that he doesn’t actually leave. He tells her in the pub that he’s leaving. He tells her in the kitchen at home that he’s leaving. But as far as we know, he’s still there.  Meanwhile, Sally cries on Kev’s shoulder as she wonders if it’s the end of the road for her and Tim. 

Speaking of Phelan, he knows there’s something odd going on inside Nicola’s flat when she won’t let him inside and he sees the curtains twitch. It’s Seb, of course, doing a terrible job of lying low and keeping away from the windows. So, when Faye finds out that Seb’s at Nicola’s flat, she goes there in a Streetcars cab. Unfortunately, Phelan overhears Steve take the call and follows Faye to Nicola’s flat. He barges inside with Faye, determined to find out what’s going on.  In a bid to get her dad out of the flat, Nicola feigns pregnancy problems and Phelan rushes his daughter to the hospital for an ultrasound.  Nicola then tells Phelan she’ll move in with him and Eileen until the baby’s born, thinking that it’ll be safer for Seb if Phelan has no cause to visit her flat again. But Phelan knows there’s something up and gets that look on his face again.

Elsewhere this week, Gina forgets to take her medication and goes off the rails, stealing fish fingers for which she gets locked up overnight. Dev tells her he’ll care for her (I’m not really buying their relationship) but she must remember to take her tablets as he can’t have her going off the rails while he’s got Aadi and Asha to look after too.

Speaking of pills, Billy’s in a great deal of pain after Adam swaps his heavy-duty painkillers for ordinary paracetamol. Adam wants Billy to suffer, of course, for what he did to his mam Susan in the past. Billy’s behaviour is affecting Summer now, and she’s become his carer.  Where’s that nosy social worker when she’s needed, the one who was always popping in and out?  Where’s the vicar’s convalescent home he can go to? 

And finally, this week it’s Eva’s 30th birthday and it’s also Amy’s 14th birthday on the same day. Eva pretends to get drunk at her party in the Rovers so that Leanne doesn’t twig that Eva isn’t drinking because she’s really pregnant and is going to give her baby to Toyah. A truly daft storyline in every single sense.

Corrie weekly update - Phelan murderous again

This was the week when killer Phelan struck again and this time the victim was Luke. Lovely Luke with his head full of thick hair is dead and gone, blown to smithereens in an explosion after a car chase. He’d been asking too many questions about Andy’s disappearance and Phelan finally made sure that he’d ask no more.

Elsewhere this week it was Sinead’s hen do in the Bistro and Chesney’s stag do in the Rovers. At Sinead’s bash, there’s a DVD of her as a child showing on a screen in the Bistro. Daniel threatens Chesney and tells him he’s going to show a DVD taken from the CCTV at the RR in CS that shows Chesney hitting himself in the face with a brick. Chesney rushes into the hen do to stop the DVD from being shown. In the fracas, Beth gets thrown to the floor and breaks her arm. There never was a DVD, Daniel tells Chesney later and the two of them agree to bury the hatchet. Right in Chesney’s head. 

Brian moves out of Roy’s flat as Carla prepares to move in. Cathy moves out of Yasmeen’s house and Yasmeen breathes a sigh of relief. Cathy and Brian then move into together into the flat above The Kabin, making them next door neighbours to HRH Rita, Lady Tanner.

Steve offers Michelle ten thousand whopping pounds when he finds out that she’s in debt at the Bistro. It’s ten grand that he doesn’t owe her, but tells her it’s money she should have had from their divorce settlement (it’s not).  Where Steve has got the money from when Michelle was supposed to have bled him dry in the divorce, hence the reason for him selling the Rovers in the first place, is anyone’s guess. As is why he’s being so nice to his ex.  It’s a question that new girlfriend/old wife Tracy wants the answer to, too.

Alya and Aidan continue to do business with the racist Parker Brothers. This escalates and there’s a fight in the street when Luke gets involved (before Phelan killed him, obvs.) Then a poison pen letter is pushed under Alya’s door and a car is damaged at the garage as the racists step up their campaign of hate.

Hospital scene number 1 this week: Roy consults about donating a kidney to Carla.

Hospital scene number 2 this week: Billy still in bed covered in tubes.

Elsewhere this week, Robert walks in on Kate and Rana as they canoodle on his sofa in the flat after Michelle lets the lovebirds use it.

Sean gets the sack from the pub and from his job at the medical centre this week. In both cases, it was for talking about confidential matters in a public place. 

And finally, this week, Ken told Sophie that Emily was back in the country, tending to her niece Freda who is ill. Norris is also with Emily at Freda’s house. I doubt very much that we’ll see Emily back on the Street so I am intrigued as to why she’s been mentioned; most odd.

Corrie weekly update - Padron Flaming Peppers

My favourite story this week has been that of Gemma and Newt. Newt, you’ll remember is the nickname of Henry Newton, heir to the Newton and Ridley beer empire. He’s Cecil Newton’s grandson but to Gemma he’s her Prince Charming. So taken is she by him that she locks herself in the loo at the Rovers when he turns up with a bouquet of flowers for her. Gemma’s not used to such niceties from fellas, and Rita has to go and have a word with her to get her out of the loo.

THIS WEEK'S HOSPITAL SCENE NO. 1. Baby George keeps falling ill, and it seems as if it happens each time he’s with Mary. In a soap twist I’ve been shaking my head at this week, Mary’s son Jude and his wife Angie report Mary for child abuse to the social services. Mary’s in pieces, she wouldn’t hurt a fly never mind her beloved grandson. But Jude and Mary are certain she’s hurting their baby and decide to head back to South Africa. Again. Oh, just go and never come back. 

Todd figures out that the car crash Billy was involved in many years ago was the same car crash that killed Susan Barlow – Peter’s twin and Adam’s mum. Billy’s beside himself with grief.

THIS WEEK’S HOSPITAL SCENE NO. 2 – Robert after having his testicle removed in the cancer scare.

Faye moves in with Eileen and Phelan and away from Anna and Gary. She chooses to believe that Phelan’s a good guy and so it’s left to Gary to tell Faye that Phelan raped Anna. Still it’s not enough for Phelan’s grip on Faye and Seb to loosen. Gary’s at a loose end and heads back to Ukraine to do another job. Sarah gives him a St. Christopher medallion before he leaves.

Over at Underworld, Matthew Singh gives the place the once-over but is shocked to find there’s a squatter living in there. Less shocked is Aidan Connor. Is Aidan deliberately trying to put Matthew off from buying the place?

Johnny and Jenny’s plans to move to Spain continue and Kate says she fancies moving with them. Rana’s not happy to hear this and then the next thing you know, she and Kate are stripping each other’s clothes off in the back of the Speed Dahl van while Luke finds them together. This story might be titillation for the lads and post-feminism soap for ladettes, but for this long-term soap fan it’s just really dull.

And that’s just about that for this week.

Corrie weekly update - Kabin Fever

Sally wins against Kirk to be crowned Mayor of Weatherfield this week - and even Kirk votes for her. But during the campaign, Beth hires a fancy dress outfit so that she can be the flower to Kirkeh’s Buzzer Bee.  Which seems a wasteful thing to spend her money on when she’s out of work and skint. But what do I know? Seems I’m out of step with all things Corrie right now and so I’ll apologise now if this week’s update contains scenes of WTF? ETC.

Anyway, Beth goes to the fancy dress shop to return the outfit and pretends she’s never worn it. She wants a full refund but the shopkeeper can tell it’s been worn because it’s covered in food stains, and also because Beth’s picture is in the paper alongside Kirk where she’s wearing the outfit too. An altercation ensues and the cops are called. In comes PC Craig Tinker threatening to arrest his own mum.  Poor Craig though, his obsession with timing and detail is threatening to derail him as his obsessive behaviour takes hold.

Elsewhere this week, the Kabin was sold. See, I told you I was out of step with Corrie because the last thing I remember about this was Rita lying in her hospital bed and Colin brought in the papers for her to sign to sell her flat to.him. We never saw her sign them. We never saw Norris sell the Kabin to him either. Neither were mentioned again apart from a throwaway comment on Wednesday night. But somehow Colin now owns the Kabin and the flat. Norris has a retirement party in the Rovers and Rita is homeless as Colin’s bought her flat too.

Never in all my Corrie-watching years has a storyline moved on so quickly, so ridiculously, so thoughtlessly and with such little regard to us fans. We’re supposed to care about the programme but ITV are making it hard for us to do so when it feels like it’s being thrown together right now. Add to the mix this week that there were at least two fluffed lines (one from Gary Windass and one from Queen Rita herself) that went unchanged. It really, really saddens me to see Corrie like this.

The good news however is that Rita is given the all-clear from her brain tumour. It was benign - and a nation raised its glass to HRH Reet of the Lady Tanner.

Michelle goes to visit Robert in prison and despite the fact that his appearance has changed completely and he’s gone silver grey instead of Captain Scarlet black, she gives it scant mention.  Also changed appearance completely this week is David Platt who invites Shona to live with them all.  David and his new beard and moustache were not commented on once. Come on, Corrie. You know you can do better that this. You’ve had 57 years practice.

Anna gets arrested for pushing Seb off his ladder and wanting the lad dead. She didn’t do it, of course, it’s Phelan’s plan to frame her after he plants one of her ear-rings inside Barlow’s solicitor office. The Corrie comedy coppers arrest her anyway and Anna’s as bitter as you’d expect. Well, you would be too. But there’s worse news for Seb when he’s diagnosed as HIV positive. Faye has a test too and she is free of the virus but Seb now has to come to terms with a life on medication.
Chesney returns from Portugal with son Joseph in tow, who doesn’t say a word, not a word. The lad’s grieving for his mum and having a hard time fitting back into life in the rain and cold of Weatherfield.  Chesney dumps Joseph on an uncaring Sinead while he sorts out a school place for his son. And if that wasn’t bad enough, he then tells Sinead she can look after Joseph while Ches is at work.  Sinead isn’t best pleased.

Gary finds out that Nicola’s pregnant and goes to confront her, asking her if the baby’s his. She says it’s not and then she seeks him out and tells him it is. Make your flamin’ mind up, woman! Gary disappointed me mightily when he told Nicola she would need to get an abortion. Nicola, quite rightly, chucked him out.

And finally this week the wonderful Gemma used her flirting app to find a fella t the bar of the Rover Return. But while Gemma’s in the ladies loo at the Rovers, the lad calls his mate on his phone and says derogatory things about Gemma, things that Peter Barlow overhears.  In a beautifully done scene, Peter tells Gemma not to bother with the lad and then chucks him out of the pub. More of this kind of thing, Corrie.  Please.

And that’s just about that for this week.
