Corrie weekly update – Funeral, Phelan and a Fly Swatter

Corrie weekly updates from 1995
All the wit and warmth of Weatherfield
None of the waffle

Available from
amazon.co.uk or amazon.com

This week was Luke’s funeral and his sister Steph returned in tears. But distraught as she was, she let Phelan know that she’s keeping her beady eye on him because she knows he had something to do with Andy’s disappearance. The vultures are circling around Phelen.  Eileen’s suspicious of her husband but defends him to the hilt, so much so that Tim sacks her from Streetcars because he can’t trust her. Tim’s afraid of Phelan for what he’s done to Luke and he moves away from the Street, taking Faye with him. Sally’s at her wit’s end with Tim gone, and he’s not answering his phone either. Sally refuses to believe what Tim says, that there’s that much evil in Phelan. Ah, how little she does know.   In an effort to further bring Phelan down, Nicola tells Gary to suck up to Phelan to get a job working with him at the mill. That way, Gary gets access to the mill where they all know Phelan is hiding something. What they don’t know is that there are two dead bodies (Andy and Vinny) that Phelan is protecting there.

While Alya continues to mourn Luke for longer than she ever dated him, Zeedan comforts Rana who has a few tears at home after the funeral. But it’s not Luke she’s crying for, it’s for her feelings for Kate and she tells Zeedan she’s in love with someone else. It’s left to Kate in the Bistro to tell Zeedan that she’s the one that Rana has fallen for, not Robert, as Zeedan suspected.  Zeedan, who has never touched a drop of alcohol in his life, buys a bottle of Scotch and gets hammered to down his sorrows. Now, the first time I touched a drop of alcohol when I was younger I bought a bottle of Martini when my mam and dad were away on holiday. I had two glasses, danced around the living room then collapsed in a heap and threw up. I have never touched Martini since. Zeedan, however, is made of harder stuff for he swigs almost the whole bottle of scotch and he’s still coherent and able to walk himself up the stairs. I don’t think so, mate.

In order to remember Luke as the gentle, kind fella he was, a fight night is arranged. Ah well. Newcomer Josh is taken on at the garage by Tyrone and sets to arranging the boxing match between all on the Street. Shona is paired up to fight Maria and there’s a wonderful scene where Maria tries to hide her fear, and can’t.

Eva goes to the clinic to have her abortion but Toyah turns up at the last minute saying “I’m not here to tell you what to do with your body…” and then goes on to tell Eva what to do with her body.  And that is to have her baby and give it to Toyah and Peter so they can live happily ever after.  In order to do this Eva knows she’ll have to leave the Street and have the baby somewhere private so that no-one knows the baby’s hers.

Daniel tries (and fails) to make up with Sinead with his offer of a platic venus fly-trap and then he chats to Carla in the Bistro. Carla’s bored, she wants a plaything and she finds it in Daniel who entertains her under his duvet in the flat. As they leave the flat, they snog and Sinead sees them at it. Later in the Rovers, Daniel and Carla have a drink together, under the watchful eye and jealous mind of Peter Barlow, who’s wonderful in this scene. He snips and snipes at Carla, clearly rattled by her having a fling with anyone, not least his half-brother.  And as Peter’s having a go at her, in walks Beth who, protective of Sinead, also has a go at Carla and Daniel together. It’s wonderful scene, really funny and biting too.

Speaking of Carla, she finally tells Aidan and Kate about needing a kidney donor.  Johnny Connor has been absent from Corrie for a while now and I’m not sure where he is. But Aidan and Kate get tested and one of them will become Carla’s kidney donor.

THIS WEEK’S HOSPITAL SCENE:  Carla and her kidney when Roy tells her he’s been tested but has proved not to be a match.

Amy and Steve’s digital detox ends badly when Amy says she’s going to the pictures. Steve tells her he’ll pick her up, but Amy’s really at a house party where everyone’s on their phones texting each other, or whatever they do. Steve and Tracy finally find out where Amy is and barge into the party only to find Amy in full snog with some boy from school.

And finally this week, Gina’s not taking her medication properly and her bipolar condition gets the better of her. She takes on the mantle of chief mechanic at the garage after Sally needs a tyre changed and while they’re there at the garage, offers to do an MOT on a customer’s care. It’s left to Sally to call the woman back and tell her she’ll have to take her car elsewhere as Gina’s not qualified to do it.

And that’s just about that for this week.

Corrie weekly update - Happy New Year?

Corrie weekly updates from 1995
All the wit and warmth of Weatherfield
None of the waffle

Available from amazon.co.uk or amazon.com

Greetings and welcome to another week of words from Weatherfield. Here’s wishing every single one of you a very Happy New Year! And so, without any further ado, here we go with this week’s Coronation Street update which is short because I didn’t enjoy this week’s Corrie at all. Too many plot holes, too many characters changing personality, too many hospital scenes.  Here’s to 2018 and all that it may bring us Corrie fans, whether we want it or not.

It’s David Platt’s birthday and Shona gives him an umbrella, ella, ella.

Carla Connor returns with her cheekbones blazing but her glass of red oddly empty. Is she pregnant? No! On a diet? No! Prepare yourself for months of hospital scenes. She’s got kidney disease and Roy could be the one to save her.

Alya suffers racist abuse from the Parker Brothers at Showcase, the very people that she and Aidan are trying to do business with. The very people who could save Underworld.  There’s no denying that the Parker Brothers are a nasty piece of work in anyone’s world.

Billy falls off a cliff top after Peter Barlow lets him loose from his car boot where he’s bundled him into in his grief at finding out Billy was in the car that killed Peter’s twin, Susan. Billy survives the fall and there’s lots of hospital scenes which just about fair put me off my sprouts.  Added to Billy’s woes is a visit from Ken Barlow pretending to be Don Corleone, wrapped up in a duffel coat, whispering loudly about family secrets. Billy’s got more to worry about however when Peter rings Geraldine, Summer’s horrid grandma who determines to take Summer back home with her. But Todd’s done a runner with Summer (a hasty exit for Todd after actor Bruno Langley was sacked).

Adam tries to commit suicide as he comes to terms with the fact that Billy was in the car that killed his mum, Susan. Daniel finds him and saves him.

Best storyline of the week for this Corrie fan has been Steve and Tracy getting back together, well, sort of. Amy’s not pleased about it, but I am, even if Steve makes eyes at his ex-wife Michelle in the Bistro while he’s supposed to be on a date with Tracy.

And that’s just about that for this week.

Corrie weekly update - Padron Flaming Peppers

Corrie weekly updates from 1995
All the wit and warmth of Weatherfield
None of the waffle

Available from
amazon.co.uk or amazon.com

My favourite story this week has been that of Gemma and Newt. Newt, you’ll remember is the nickname of Henry Newton, heir to the Newton and Ridley beer empire. He’s Cecil Newton’s grandson but to Gemma he’s her Prince Charming. So taken is she by him that she locks herself in the loo at the Rovers when he turns up with a bouquet of flowers for her. Gemma’s not used to such niceties from fellas, and Rita has to go and have a word with her to get her out of the loo.

THIS WEEK'S HOSPITAL SCENE NO. 1. Baby George keeps falling ill, and it seems as if it happens each time he’s with Mary. In a soap twist I’ve been shaking my head at this week, Mary’s son Jude and his wife Angie report Mary for child abuse to the social services. Mary’s in pieces, she wouldn’t hurt a fly never mind her beloved grandson. But Jude and Mary are certain she’s hurting their baby and decide to head back to South Africa. Again. Oh, just go and never come back.

Todd figures out that the car crash Billy was involved in many years ago was the same car crash that killed Susan Barlow – Peter’s twin and Adam’s mum. Billy’s beside himself with grief.

THIS WEEK’S HOSPITAL SCENE NO. 2 – Robert after having his testicle removed in the cancer scare.

Faye moves in with Eileen and Phelan and away from Anna and Gary. She chooses to believe that Phelan’s a good guy and so it’s left to Gary to tell Faye that Phelan raped Anna. Still it’s not enough for Phelan’s grip on Faye and Seb to loosen. Gary’s at a loose end and heads back to Ukraine to do another job. Sarah gives him a St. Christopher medallion before he leaves.

Over at Underworld, Matthew Singh gives the place the once-over but is shocked to find there’s a squatter living in there. Less shocked is Aidan Connor. Is Aidan deliberately trying to put Matthew off from buying the place?

Johnny and Jenny’s plans to move to Spain continue and Kate says she fancies moving with them. Rana’s not happy to hear this and then the next thing you know, she and Kate are stripping each other’s clothes off in the back of the Speed Dahl van while Luke finds them together. This story might be titillation for the lads and post-feminism soap for ladettes, but for this long-term soap fan it’s just really dull.

And that’s just about that for this week.

Corrie weekly update - Kabin Fever

Corrie weekly updates from 1995
All the wit and warmth of Weatherfield
None of the waffle

Available from
amazon.co.uk or amazon.com

Sally wins against Kirk to be crowned Mayor of Weatherfield this week - and even Kirk votes for her. But during the campaign, Beth hires a fancy dress outfit so that she can be the flower to Kirkeh’s Buzzer Bee.  Which seems a wasteful thing to spend her money on when she’s out of work and skint. But what do I know? Seems I’m out of step with all things Corrie right now and so I’ll apologise now if this week’s update contains scenes of WTF? ETC.

Anyway, Beth goes to the fancy dress shop to return the outfit and pretends she’s never worn it. She wants a full refund but the shopkeeper can tell it’s been worn because it’s covered in food stains, and also because Beth’s picture is in the paper alongside Kirk where she’s wearing the outfit too. An altercation ensues and the cops are called. In comes PC Craig Tinker threatening to arrest his own mum.  Poor Craig though, his obsession with timing and detail is threatening to derail him as his obsessive behaviour takes hold.

Elsewhere this week, the Kabin was sold. See, I told you I was out of step with Corrie because the last thing I remember about this was Rita lying in her hospital bed and Colin brought in the papers for her to sign to sell her flat to.him. We never saw her sign them. We never saw Norris sell the Kabin to him either. Neither were mentioned again apart from a throwaway comment on Wednesday night. But somehow Colin now owns the Kabin and the flat. Norris has a retirement party in the Rovers and Rita is homeless as Colin’s bought her flat too.

Never in all my Corrie-watching years has a storyline moved on so quickly, so ridiculously, so thoughtlessly and with such little regard to us fans. We’re supposed to care about the programme but ITV are making it hard for us to do so when it feels like it’s being thrown together right now. Add to the mix this week that there were at least two fluffed lines (one from Gary Windass and one from Queen Rita herself) that went unchanged. It really, really saddens me to see Corrie like this.

The good news however is that Rita is given the all-clear from her brain tumour. It was benign - and a nation raised its glass to HRH Reet of the Lady Tanner.

Michelle goes to visit Robert in prison and despite the fact that his appearance has changed completely and he’s gone silver grey instead of Captain Scarlet black, she gives it scant mention.  Also changed appearance completely this week is David Platt who invites Shona to live with them all.  David and his new beard and moustache were not commented on once. Come on, Corrie. You know you can do better that this. You’ve had 57 years practice.

Anna gets arrested for pushing Seb off his ladder and wanting the lad dead. She didn’t do it, of course, it’s Phelan’s plan to frame her after he plants one of her ear-rings inside Barlow’s solicitor office. The Corrie comedy coppers arrest her anyway and Anna’s as bitter as you’d expect. Well, you would be too. But there’s worse news for Seb when he’s diagnosed as HIV positive. Faye has a test too and she is free of the virus but Seb now has to come to terms with a life on medication.
Chesney returns from Portugal with son Joseph in tow, who doesn’t say a word, not a word. The lad’s grieving for his mum and having a hard time fitting back into life in the rain and cold of Weatherfield.  Chesney dumps Joseph on an uncaring Sinead while he sorts out a school place for his son. And if that wasn’t bad enough, he then tells Sinead she can look after Joseph while Ches is at work.  Sinead isn’t best pleased.

Gary finds out that Nicola’s pregnant and goes to confront her, asking her if the baby’s his. She says it’s not and then she seeks him out and tells him it is. Make your flamin’ mind up, woman! Gary disappointed me mightily when he told Nicola she would need to get an abortion. Nicola, quite rightly, chucked him out.

And finally this week the wonderful Gemma used her flirting app to find a fella t the bar of the Rover Return. But while Gemma’s in the ladies loo at the Rovers, the lad calls his mate on his phone and says derogatory things about Gemma, things that Peter Barlow overhears.  In a beautifully done scene, Peter tells Gemma not to bother with the lad and then chucks him out of the pub. More of this kind of thing, Corrie.  Please.

And that’s just about that for this week.

Corrie weekly update - Conviction, Crowdfunding and the Zambesi Club

Corrie weekly updates from 1995All the wit and warmth of WeatherfieldNone of the waffleAvailable from amazon.co.uk or amazon.com

Bethany’s grooming storyline reached its end this week with the conviction of Nathan and bent copper Neil. But it didn’t end without drama when Mel wormed her way into Bethany’s trust and tried to attack her to keep her from getting to court and testifying against Nathan.  And after the court case ended, Gary gave Sarah tickets to Milan for her and Bethany to get away. Meanwhile, back at home after the trial, Craig confides in mum Beth that he’s in love with Bethany.

Anna continues to play good Samaritan this week helping Seb cope at home with his younger siblings and drug-addict mum. But both Seb and Anna keep all of this secret from Faye.

As Underworld has been forced to close after the break in, the girls and Sean are without work and skint. They decide to set up a crowdfunding page to see if they can raise cash for Fiz to start a business knitting hats for children with cancer.  As the idea was inspired from Hope’s own battle with cancer, Beth adds a picture of Hope and her cancer story to pull at heartstrings and raise more cash. Fiz is furious when she finds out what Beth has gone and done but calms down when Beth shows her how much money is coming in.

Eva’s not in the good books of the Underworld girls as they continue to blame her for losing their jobs. But she’s soon cheered up by Adam Barlow who goes in for a snog.

Meanwhile Daniel proves he’s a chip off the old block by enjoying sub-duvet activity with his editor at the Weatherfield Gazette. She encourages him to go after Phelan on a story about the Calcutta Flats development. Phelan, however, is less keen on having newshound Daniel on his case and follows Daniel to a care home where he finds out that’s where his old business pal Vinny’s mam is living.

Phelan continues to keep Andy alive in the basement of the house he’s supposed to be renovating. Andy tries to commit suicide, even going so far as to write Steph a farewell note, but he can’t do the deed in the end. But Andy might just be the least of Phelan’s problems once Daniel starts digging for the truth.

Rita goes through with her operation to remove the brain tumour. Norris, Jenny and Gemma are by her side when she goes in and her girls are there when she wakes up. We don’t yet know if the tumour is malignant or benign, so further drama may ensue. There was a lovely scene before Rita went into hospital, between her and Norris as he reflected on what might have been between them both had they met earlier in life.

Elsewhere this week, Shona’s ex Dane, who is Clayton’s dad, comes calling on the cobbles wanting a share of Shona’s scratch card winnings. It’s fair to say that she’s not best pleased to see him.

And that’s just about that for this week.

Corrie weekly update - Buzzer Bee and a Caesar Salad

Corrie weekly updates from 1995All the wit and warmth of WeatherfieldNone of the waffleAvailable from amazon.co.uk or amazon.com

Weatherfield County football team announce a new mascot called Buzzer the Bee. Tim applies for the job but it’s Kirk who gets picked. And when a reporter from the local paper comes to interview Kirk, she suggests he goes one further and stand against Sally for Mayor. Kirk? Mayor? It just might work!

In the cellar of the big house, Phelan keeps Andy tied up to the wall. Eileen comes calling to find out where Pat is, and what does Andy do, when he hears Eileen above? Does he call out and run? No, my friends, he does not. He stays put and quiet while we’re yelling at our tellies for him to scream and scarper.  Pat takes photos of Andy, telling him he’s going to get a passport to smuggle him out to France. But when the photos come spilling out of Phelan’s bag in the builder’s yard, Nicola wants to know who the strange, bearded man is. Phelan stuffs the photos back in his bag before Eileen can recognise the man that Nicola didn’t.  Andy’s arm gets infected and Phelan lies to the doc to get antibiotics for him, saying he’s got an infected gum.  Liz, still not used to working behind a counter instead of a bar, takes it upon herself to spread the gossip to Eileen that Phelan’s been into the medical centre and he’s ill and on pills.

Summer and Amy’s friendship continues its rocky way after Summer agrees to dye Amy’s hair – with bleach from Dev’s corner shop. It goes orange, and Amy is marched home by Tracy in a bad mood.  “My mum will kill me!” Amy rages when she sees the colour of her hair, to which Summer quickly replied: “With most teenagers, when they say, that they’re exaggerating but…”  Great stuff indeed from writer Joe Turner that made me chuckle a lot.

Meanwhile, on a night out for Rana and Kate, they meet Imogen who Kate lusts after. Rana’s fair put out and there’s more to her displeasure than just being a third wheel on a lesbian date.  She’s got feelings for Kate herself, but is keeping them to herself for now, although we all know, of course.

Over at the Bistro, Will plants drugs in the first aid box and calls the cops who arrive with their sniffer dog. Michelle chucks the tablets into the curry and the cops go away empty handed.  But Will’s got another plan to bring Robert down and make Michelle his own.  Michelle reckons that drug dealer Rich planted the drugs in the Bistro and storms off to his house to give him hell.  Will calls the cops again and tells them it’s all kicking off at Rich’s house where Robert is taken away for breach of the peace, or summat. To be honest, I’m done with this storyline, I hope they take Robert away and never bring him back. Michelle deserves better and Kym Marsh deserves a better storyline. From the drama and heartbreak of baby Ruari to this?  Come on, Corrie, give the girl a break, she’s worth so much more. Get her away from Robert and put a smile on her face.

And finally this week, concerned about Rita’s memory loss, Gemma makes her an appointment to see the doctor. Now, this upsets Rita even further because she can’t remember making the appointment. And although Gemma meant well, it backfires on her when Rita finds out that the appointment was made without her consent and she cancels. Rita tells Norris and Gemma that her memory loss is being caused as a side-effect of blood pressure tablets she’s just started to take, but there’s worse to come next week, I’m afraid when the truth is revealed.  And proving that she can still act her socks off (if proof were needed) Barbara Knox had me in tears this week when she admitted to Norris in The Kabin that yes, she was having ‘senior moments’.

And that’s just about that for this week.
