Sam Robertson interview: Angry Adam takes on dangerous Damon

How angry is Adam that Damon seems to have walked back in and just taken over his life and his family?

He’s horrified, he’s extremely angry and he’s out to wreak glorious vengeance.

At New Year did Adam think he and Sarah might still have a future, is that what he wanted?

Yeah it’s definitely what he wanted, he never stopped loving Sarah, he still loves her now despite everything that she’s put him through. So when there was that flicker of potentiality he was definitely thinking it was going to happen, until Steve walked in and ruined the moment for him. It was a shame because it turns out that was the last moment of closeness they had together so yeah he was pretty gutted about it.

What is it that makes Adam decide to go and visit Harvey in prison? Is it watching Damon around Harry?

I think he’s upset about Harry but it’s not just Harry it’s Sarah as well. Adam really has it in for Damon, especially after being tied up and almost shot, then there’s also all the past problems they’ve had. He really hates the guy with an absolute passion so for him to saunter back in and take over his life, Adam’s just lost all sense of reason and he’s willing to do whatever it takes to get rid of him.

Adam started off as Damon’s solicitor so he knows a lot more about his past than Sarah. Does that worry Adam?

He knows a lot more about Damon after looking at his legal affairs, so his conscience is telling him that ultimately he’s doing the right thing because he’s saving Sarah from herself. In Adam’s opinion this guy’s a bad egg and she doesn’t seem to know that so he’ll get rid of him for her and get her away from any potential danger down the line.

Adam proposes a deal to Harvey in which he gets rid of Damon, how serious is Adam about getting Damon out of his life?

He’s 100% serious about getting rid of Damon, he’s all in now and he seems unrepentant. He’s not having any doubts about what he’s doing, he has worries about certain elements of the ruse, but his fundamental aim remains resolute, he wants rid of Damon ASAP.

This is a big crossing of the line for Adam both professionally and personally, are we going to see a slightly darker Adam?

That seems to be the case and it’s fun to play a slightly darker side to him. This is the darkest we’ve seen Adam, last year when the whole Damon thing was kicking off I felt Adam was being a bit soft and little bit too forgiving, considering all the turmoil Sarah had put him through, so it’s interesting to see this darker edge coming back to Adam because I’ve always felt it was there somewhere.

Does he realise how dangerous Harvey is?

I think the more he gets to know him the more he’s becoming aware and he’s getting a little trepidatious about being in so deep, but he’s started the ball rolling now so he’s either all in or he’s in trouble. Maybe he didn’t realise at the beginning, but he realises now how dangerous Harvey is for sure.

Does Adam think he can outwit Harvey or is he very quickly aware he’s in too deep?

He realises very quickly that Harvey’s a lot smarter than he gave him credit for, although he’s a villain and he’s from a rough background he’s not stupid. Adam realises quite quickly that he’s been played a little bit by Harvey but he’s in too deep now, he’s going to have to go with what Harvey says and roll with the punches. Adam’s definitely not dictating things now that’s for sure.

He’s risking everything here for Sarah, do you think this is a marriage worth fighting for or do you think Adam has made a big mistake?

I’ve always really loved Adam and Sarah together and I’ve always believed in them so when I was told they were breaking up I was pretty gutted personally but in terms of the storyline it was exciting. I’ve always thought that one day maybe they’ll get back together. I think ultimately Adam’s doing this because he loves Sarah so much and I think he’s being blinded by the love he has for her. He’s willing to sacrifice his own profession, possibly his own liberty, his own reputation to save Sarah so I think that shows the extent of how much he really loves her.

We’ve seen Adam struggling with panic attacks for the last few months. Will the knowledge of what he’s doing here further affect how he deals with this and feels about himself?

I think he’s coming through that now, when he was first learning about everything Sarah had done it was horrifying and he really struggled with his mental health. But he’s now got the fire in his belly back, he’s got that steel within him and he’s decided he’s not going to be rolled over and messed about by anybody. His whole life was unmoored, he was all at sea and he really struggled, now he’s trying to take that control back. He’s found his groove, he’s decided what his objective is but we’ll see how that plays out.

Is he worried about how people will react when they find out he’s representing Harvey, and how it might affect Nick & Sam, or is getting rid of Damon for good to big a prize?

I think at this moment in time he doesn’t really care what anyone thinks he just wants to get rid of Damon at all costs. If anything he’s lost all sense of reason, he’s willing to torch his whole reputation in Weatherfield to get rid of this guy who doesn’t even really live here. He’s blocking any possible guilt out, I think he’s a bit delusional.

Are you enjoying working with Will and Ciaran and seeing a different side to Adam?

Absolutely yes, they’re both really good actors and I’ve watched them from afar and been a big fan of their work. I worked with Ciaran a lot last year which was great. The first time I worked with Will was a few weeks back, he’s quite a big personality and I was quite intimidated to work with him at first. When you start working with new actors and they’re really good it can be intimidating, especially when you’ve got a lot of two handers, but after the first couple of takes I felt like I’d gained his trust, there was good camaraderie and the chemistry was there and it felt like we were creating something really good for on screen so long may it continue. I’m really enjoying working with both of them.
