Coronation Street Episode Review Monday 17th July

TOYAH - SPIDER - CORONATION STREET - ITV

Relationships are under the microscope this evening and none of them come out well. First up is Toyah and Spider, which I think we all knew was going to be temporary. Toyah has been in the back of that van since Friday waiting to be rescued, which Spider duly does without any police back-up because of [reasons]. Turns out that the gunwoman is nothing to do with his ex-wife or white supremacists, but the wife of a heroin dealer who died after Spider's undercover work got him sent down - and she wants revenge with a bit of Toyah-napping. Hey, at least it's not Sam being kidnapped again. Toyah should just start to counsel the woman, she'd let her go straight away. Anyhoo, the upshot is: Spider is shot, but just as I thought Toyah was having terrible luck with boyfriends, it turns out he's wearing a bullet-proof vest. He detains the woman and they're all taken off to Kate Oates Memorial where Toyah wants Spider to quit the force and he believes he's doing too much good to leave, so they split up. Au revoir, Geoffrey. Say hi to Auntie Em.

As an aside, the speech from the gunwoman, about how she trusted Spider and how he betrayed her and her dead hubby makes me think the storyliners wanted to explore the unethical side of undercover work (à la the McLibel/Spycops case). TBH, I think they should've gone there and made Spider have a romantic relationship with a crim, but perhaps the Corrie legal advisors weren't keen.

ELAINE - STEPHEN - CORONATION STREET - ITV

Next up, Stephen and Elaine. Literally the only person who's not now suspicious of Stephen is Audrey who counsels Elaine that Stephen is a good man and loves her and later we see that Aud has bought Stephen's depression story. He's still pretty dumb though - surely he would've known or at least found out that life insurance doesn't pay out on suicide (particularly dodgy suicide). After some arguments (Elaine prefers to descale the kettle than go for brunch (brunch? On a Monday!? No wonder the Bistro is losing money). Btw Elaine, white vinegar will work better than lemons and bicarb), they make up and they agree to go away to the Peak district. The pic on Stephen's laptop shows Matlock Baths, but they are apparently going to Kinder Scout, where people once trespassed to get the right to roam and where Stephen is going to trespass on Elaine's life. Hopefully, when it's over Elaine will able to tai-chi her way through her misery.

DARREN - AADI - DEV - CORONATION STREET - ITV

Thirdly, Amy starts at her new job at the corner shop and Aadi is flirty with her. I'm shipping these two, I think they'd make a cute couple and after her ordeal with Aaron and his being dumped by both Summer and Kelly, they both deserve a bit of teenage lurve. There will be obstacles along the way though and the first one is that Dev wants Aadi to come play golf with him and a business dude. Said dude (Darren) wants to buy up some of Freshco's smaller units that they're selling off and open up off-licences. Dev wants in but he doesn't have the ready cash, and anyway, Darren seems to be more interested in Aadi becoming his intern because he (Aadi) has good business instincts. Not enough to ask how much he's gonna be paid!

Finally, B-Pac and his kissing cousin are back and she's as annoying as ever. Brian hated the trip so much that he tried to stage a pedalo accident at a local boating lake. Once again Peter Gunn's comic timing is *chef's kiss*. He still won't tell Isabella to lancia il tuo gancio, despite Mary's hints.

I agree that Amy and Aadi would make a good couple. Maybe that's a story for later in the year?
I'm sorry to see Spider go but if his time's up and his stint is over, so be it.
As far as I know, Toyah doesn't have a job and is living with Leanne, Sam and Nick rent free. I think she need a new occupation to keep her mind busy.
As Ryan is away, why couldn't she fill in for him at The Bistro? Or volunteer at charity shop at the precinct?
Where are Brian and his silly cousin leading us to? It's a daft comedy thread that's dragged on for too long.
It was nice to see a rare glimpse of The Kabin last night.
I don't know any papershops that stock sweets in jars like this any more. You'd think the sweets would go off, stored in sunlight.
We haven't seen the sets of Trim up North or Audrey's for a while, either.

Doesn’t Toyah work at the factory in sales?

I'm not sorry to see Spider go...I preferred him as an eco warrior, and I won't miss his overacting either. Toyah works at the factory and has kind of pitched in with the Bistro and Sam.....she should get back to counselling.
Brian and Mary are going to be an item..and Isabella will be found out that she isn't related to Brian at all.
The Kabin bless it...has seen better days. They used to sell vinyl for pete's sake! I don't think many buy magazines, or cards and do they still sell ciggies? Lord knows how they stay afloat when there's no foot traffic there
