Coronation Street double episode review, Monday Oct 1

All serious stuff tonight apart from a little levity brought to us via Mary and her transatlantic holiday win. She was in fine joyous form tonight, even before she knew she had won the competition. What a brilliant line she came up with too - a thoroughly worthy winner with her elephants saying to each other, 'Good job we brought our trunks.' Norris became considerably less grumpy as he tried to worm his way in as the companion on the holiday. What a lovely gesture though by Mary as she hands the tickets over to Roy and Hayley so that they may deliver the paperweight by hand,.rather than having to post it at extortionate cost. One of the writers' most brilliant lines for Mary is tonight's, 'Last time I flew they had to make an emergency landing on account of my screaming. We were only going to Inverness'.  We can forgive her (just) for her rather derogatory comment to Hayley claiming to be more like Audrey Hepburn than Hayley.

Elsewhere though there are some very dark themes. Tyrone is really struggling  with his devious wife in her attempts to keep the three of them together. At least as a househusband he will be able to protect Ruby from her mother. That said, you have to feel for someone who says of her violent father, 'I hated him so much and now I've turned into him.'

Poor Maria! A young woman with a young son needs to stay alive. It is every parent's fear that they will become too ill to look after their children. Death is something a parent cannot contemplate, so it is perfectly understandable that she is in such a dreadful state  Marcus is certainly the kind of friend you need in this situation.

The Lloyd and his daughter and his old flame story is somewhat tedious. It will be interesting to see where the story goes but hopefully go it will.

Nice touch from Nick buying the football boots for Max. David succeeded in swallowing his pride and when Max becomes the new Beckham he will see that it was all worth it. Kylie had no such reservations and she can't be blamed for that.      .
