Corrie's Spider returns to soap

Anyone who knows me will know that my favourite all-time Coronation Street fella, ever, is Spider Nugent.  Played by Martin Hancock, Spider turned up at his Aunty Em's door looking to save the world, and that. He wooed Toyah Battersby and left to run a juice bar in that London, never to be seen again.

Come on, Corrie, get Martin Hancock back to play Spider again! He's clearly still up for acting roles as Digital Spy have revealed today that the actor has signed up for a guest role on Doctors.

Martin will play a homeless man on Doctors, called Beano who has spent 20 years on the streets across various cities, having dropped out of university and turned to alcohol.  Homelessness is now a way of life for Beano, and show bosses have billed him as "intelligent, wily with a good sense of humour" and "rather expert at spotting lucrative opportunities".

Hancock's appearance on Doctors will air next year. Doctors airs weekdays at 1.45pm on BBC One.

Please let Spider return to Coronation Street, please! I'm on a one-woman campaign to get him back on the Street.

It is astounding that he hasn't been asked back in a decade. It is even more perplexing when you read recent interviews with Georgia Taylor who says she's now free to return to Corrie and wants to reinvent the character of Toyah (Something which Jane Danson has gone on record as saying she's been pushing for her return as it would be nice to have someone completely on Leanne's side).

I would love Spider and Toyah to return for a wedding. Imagine the Nugent's living on the Street? Who would have thought that the Battersby girls would marry into two of the earliest and most respectable family names?

The character sounds like Spider if his juice bar had gone under and he'd found himself on the streets.

Agree with Rachel - hardly a stretch for him that Beano character is it? Just Spider in another... er... web.

Lovin' your wishful headline though Nora. Only write, and it will be so. Etc. Good luck with that. I'd love to see Toyah back too, now that we don't get to see lovely Georgia on Casualty any more.

Surely by now, with his experience he'd be the management spokesman for some green organisation
- Oh I know, speaking to the media, heading up the 'Save The Badger' campaign that's in the news at the moment.

They've grown up, why can't Toyah come back as educated with her degree and Spider come back as a eco above management level fellow leading the organizatin. He could be heading the money organization. 2012 peole, do none of these people get an education. They can move up and still have their lives revolve around the street.

I'd love to see both Toyah and Spider back - good characters played by strong actors. But when Toyah moved to London to live with Spider, it was only as friends - they had split up long before. Still, at the rate in which the past is being ret-conned lately, that could easily be changed...

It was nice to see him in "The Corrie Years", and I thought while watching it would be great to have him back on the Street. It would open things up for Toyah, too, and would also bring Emily back into some storylines (she's been on the back burner or in the cupboard far too long).

He's my favourite too, Flaming Nora! Male or female. I guess cause eco-anything is not often mentioned in soaps, stereotyped as not sexy. On the contrary, I think with Spider as a new family man on the Street, all sorts of interesting stories will happen! Better than the revolving bedroom doors we get constantly now.

Spider could occasionally team up with Roy, maybe be a teacher at the school. Instead of crashes, fires and murders, there could be all sorts of other stuff - wind-farm fights, get on yer bike campaigns, climate change deniers... See, writers, that wasn't so hard.

I wish Spider and Toyah would come back, in any capacity. Two truly loved characters they are!

From your mouth to God's ears, Nora.
It would be really interesting to see what these two promising people developed into. As well as offering the potential for new storylines that are not bonking or violence-based.

Oh what a disappointment. I misread the headline taking it to read Spider was coming back to THIS soap. ohhhh :(

I don't think that the powers that be would know how to bring back Spider and Toyah to be honest. I don't think that any of them know the show as it was and wouldn't know where to start. They only knew of Dennis because of Elsie Tanner was an icon. And tell me what have they managed to do with him? They've reinvented the show so badly they wouldn't know what to do with good earthy characters (pardon the pun):) They only have place for whiners and screechers these days.
Just my opinion of course.

If you want to see the return of Spider, head down to the North Pole on New North Road (London) on a Wednesday night. I was there last night and to my surprise, he was the bingo caller! Had a couple of chats with him outside and have to say he was a really good guy.
