Corrie double episode review, Monday June 11 2012
Not much levity on the Street tonight. The main story of course was Simon's disappearance which brought about some dreadful 'adult' behaviour. So, David Cameron and Peter both need to improve their parenting skills.
What a great performance Simon gave tonight! That child's delivery is superb. When his father asks Simon where he found his computer game console, Simon, quick as a flash, with an undeniable logic, replies that he found it 'where you hid it.' Peter, desperately trying to keep his temper, is almost reduced to begging to make Simon do what needs to be done to get to school on time. The classic line from Simon, beloved of all children when required to do something a harassed parent asks is, 'Make me,' but Simon adds 'loser' which is really pushing it!
Ken, to be fair, is a good grandfather and seems to genuinely love Simon.'We miss him,' he tells Peter and points out that Simon's behaviour 'is a direct result of all this acrimony.' Peter appears reluctant to allow Ken to take care of Simon for fear he will 'lease him out to Leanne.' Some excellent lines tonight; sharp script and great acting.
A little lightness was forthcoming from the Maria and Marcus strand with another great line excellently delivered as Maria suggests that a statue of Marcus is built and put up in the precinct .'Nothing's ever too much trouble for him,' she tells the salon. This strand of the Street is fascinating. Where are we going with Marcus and Maria? Has Sean noticed anything? Are the writers just toying with us?
Sophie once again takes on the role of a pretty effective Relate counsellor. Dev is a man on the edge and only the hard-hearted would be unmoved by his despair. The trouble is, sound though Sophie's advice is, it might have come too late. But, now that Sunita has been roundly rejected by Karl, she may return to the husband she claims she no longer loves and who she berates for begging like a dog.
Wine features twice tonight. The very serious situation involving Simon and Carla's storing of the bottle in the utility cupboard and then Gail's spilling of 'a thimbleful' on the trousers of a punter in the Bistro. She proudly states that he started talking about dry cleaning bills, but that she 'nipped that in the bud.' Thank goodness for a little humour. And whilst we are on humour, you have to praise Ken for his efforts, but the book on weather won't threaten J K Rowling's prime position as a children's author. .
