Coronation Street Weekly Awards, Nov 21 - 25

Sam Slick award: Silver star:Phelan grabbed the police mention of Vinny and swiftly implied that Michael suspected Vinny was going to rip them all off. Nicely played.

Gold Star: Adam flaming Barlow! Adam arranged to have the car stolen for half the profit! I thought it might have been taken by the loan shark guy that Daniel owes, but he wouldn't have known where to come looking for Daniel. Adam's dodgey mate would have, though, in order to know where the car was to be stolen.

Prig award: Daniel. Correcting peoples' grammar and geography and making a general annoyance of himself.

Long Lost Family award: Anna mentioned Kevin is going to visit his sister. His SISTER! (Debbie for those of you that don't know) The Barlows really did feel like family, even if they were bickering, teasing each other and Tracy trying to dig out Daniel's secrets.

Man Up award: Todd did the hard thing, the mature thing, and was going to face the investors with the bad news but Phelan stepped up to the plate. Mind you he also swerved the blame to Vinny as we all knew he would.

Black Widow award: Gail and she knows it. She even referred to the neighbours joking about how many husbands she's buried.

Grace Personified award: Gail asking Eileen to go in the family car to the funeral. Classy and generous gesture.

Odd Couple award: Adam and Daniel get to share a flat. They hate each other. Should work out well.

First-look pics: Maria makes Aidan jealous on Coronation Street

Spotting him Maria leans in to kiss a delighted Adam, inviting him back to her flat.

Corrie weekly update - Eileen & Gail truce? Over Michael's dead body!

Coronation Street’s on a roll at the moment. So much so that the action is coming thick and fast. I’ll do my best, as always, to condense it as much as I can into a cobble-shaped update of fun. And so, without any further ado, here we go with this week’s Coronation Street update.

“I’m not your daughter, mum. I’m just gay!” says Todd to Eileen when she gushes on about wedding dresses. But before she can get online at Brides-R-Us to order her frock for her wedding to Phelan, he goes and does a runner. However, this being the world of soap, he doesn’t run too far. Phelan’s ready to fly off to Mexico with Vinny and the money they’ve scammed from people who’ve put down a deposit on the flats. But Vinny flits on his own, with all of the cash, leaving Phelan feeling duped on the Street. Todd calls a meeting in the Rovers to let everyone know what’s happened to the flats, to Vinny and Phelan, to their money. But just as Todd’s about to speak, in comes Phelan and he tells everyone that Vinny’s to blame. Phelan says he’s just an innocent, like them all, duped by Vinny’s scam. Todd has the decency to squirm. Eileen chucks Phelan out but then tells him he can move back in to Sean’s old room until he gets himself sorted out. Oh Eileen, oh ‘eck.

Speaking of Sean, he and Norris get another lodger when Brian negotiates his way inside Emily’s house.

Michael’s funeral takes place and Gail says goodbye to yet another dead husband. Andy’s more upset than you’d imagine him to be, and is determined to get the truth about what happened to his ‘dad’. He and Anna engage in conspiracy theories about Phelan, they’re on to him, but what can they do to prove that he had a hand in Michael’s death and the building scam? Anna tells Gail everything she knows about Phelan and the scam and there’s a very touching scene between Eileen and Gail as they bond over Michael’s dead body.

Cathy engages Michelle as her and Roy’s wedding planner. Roy, as we all are, is feeling uneasy about his upcoming wedding to Cathy and sacks Michelle as fast as he can.

Gemma wins her Good Samaritan Award and Rita dresses her as a Rita mini-me, in some lovely scenes. However, Gemma’s not happy that she didn’t get to meet singer Peter Andre, as had been promised by the awards organiser. So Chesney arranges for Pedro Andre, a look-a-like, to turn up on the cobbles instead. Gemma’s over the moon and goes in for a snog. “Not on the mouth!” Pedro cries “Not the mouth!”

Secrets are exposed at the Barlows this week when Tracy nicks Daniel’s keys and goes to his flat for a look around. She discovers the flat’s a mess, there’s no furniture there and no sign of Denise, Daniel’s mum. Daniel’s forced to tell the Barlows the truth about his mum; that she abandoned him when he was 15 and he’s lived on his own ever since. He’s also in trouble with a loan shark who’s been creeping around the cobbles looking for him too.

Adam’s got secrets too. His posh Jag goes missing from outside No. 1 and although he pretends he’s upset that it’s been nicked, it’s had it taken as some sort of insurance scam.

And there’s another revelation when Peter admits he wants to become a cabbie for Streetcars. I do hope he’ll get on with Fat Brenda.

Coronation Street double episode review, Friday 25 November 2016

I do love a good Corrie drama, even the odd stunt, but the most enjoyable aspect of watching for me has always been intimately experiencing the lives of its characters as if you’re the unseen guest at every table. Friday’s double Corrie captured that feeling perfectly as we were nestled upfront alongside the Barlows, Platts, Nazirs, and those collected in the Rovers, to witness events unfold.

Daniel Osbourne is undoubtedly my favourite new addition to the street. He’s unique, clever and compelling with a feisty streak, and I’m loving Rob Mallard’s subtle performance of this intriguing character. We’ve now learned that his mother Denise left him to fend for himself aged 15 with little more than a few debit card deposits, phone calls and a smattering of visits at Christmas and birthdays. It also transpires that the shady individual peering in the window of number 1 may be a debt collector, after Daniel was left with no choice but to take out a loan he couldn’t repay.

The fact that Daniel has been needlessly scorned at by all but Peter and Ken is a testimony to how different he is to people who have yet to see the like of him on the street, and I was relieved to see this latest revelation soften Tracy towards him. Adam is another story, however. He seems to be permanently sneering, particularly at Daniel, and once we learned that the stealing of his expensive hire car is a scam he’s set to profit from, I found it frankly sinister that he was intent on pinning the blame for this on Daniel. This is not endearing Adam to me I’m afraid.

Ken watching the cars depart for Michael’s funeral as he emerged from the medical centre alone, Tracy having forgotten to accompany him, was a lonely sight which was beautifully shot. It also foreshadowed the news that if he experiences any more stress, it could lead to a fatal stroke. Ken reveals this to Peter who steps up to the plate, gathers the clan together for a peaceful meal, and arranges for Adam and Daniel to move into Dev’s flat above the shop. The fact that they haven’t been getting along is mainly down to Adam, so it’ll be interesting to see how this unfolds. The positive thing is that they’re agreeing to do so without quibble for Ken’s sake. I’m loving the new Barlows, and particularly Peter as the calm, measured patriarch holding the whole thing together.

As we bid farewell to Michael, we witnessed arguably his greatest legacy; a truce between Gail and Eileen. While all wish to forget about the flats and arguments for the day that’s in it, Andy can’t, and even though a visit to Phelan seems to reassure him, he still looks suspicious concerning what exactly happened.

As Zeedan turns 21, the wonderful Yasmeen tries to keep her best face out for the sake of his birthday, but he can’t as Rana incurs his wrath by encouraging Alya to bring her card and present in person. We already heard Zeedan say he wants to know she will respect his decisions, and now he’s angry about his future wife going behind his back. Rana, however, retaliates to say she doesn’t like pig headed, macho men. It was great to see her come into her own in this episode, and even though they made up, I’m wondering if their different attitudes will make them compatible.

I really enjoyed Dev’s visit to Yasmeen. His awkwardness at calling over regarding money was offset by her offer of a meal and her dignity in the face of the financial problems they share because of Sharif.

Elsewhere, the scenes in the Rovers were simply a joy as Brian, Mary, Rita and Norris set about putting the world to rights, undoubtedly over a dubonnet, a gin and halves of Newton & Ridley’s finest, none of which Norris seemed enthused to pay for. That is, until he managed to score another lodger in the form of Brian, and he’s more than happy to stun everyone by buying a round. I’ve loved every minute of Brian Packham’s return in the capable hands of the brilliant Peter Gunn, and I'm delighted he's set to become ensconsced at the centre of the street.

As I have done with a number of Corrie episodes of late, I watched these twice, and long may my urge to do so continue.
