Coronation Street Episode Review Friday 29 March 2024

Good day.  Welcome to Friday night on the Street.  Unusually events tonight are not on a single day as will become clear.  The Rovers Return is at the fore I am pleased to record with an awful lot going on.  First up Rita has won a night on the town - theatre, dinner, hotel and so on - and needs company which Jenny is happy to accept, although it means kicking speed dating to the kerb - unless Daisy would like to take charge (she is still grumpy over having to ditch another karaoke evening).  Rita has been let down by Ken who has had a better offer from Elspeth.  Daisy has other plans - Ryan is whisking her away to the Lake District for the night as it is the anniversary of the acid attack.  However before Daisy departs she tells Jenny off for spending some of the "money" on a designer dress and the two of them have to talk Glenda into a busy evening - she gets the job of serving everyone and running the speed dating (Sean was spotted on Tipping Point a little earlier so was presumably out of town) by herself.

Amy talks Steve into going to the Speed Dating and we see him swaggering down the Street doing the full John Travolta to "Staying Alive".  His first date is Tracy and it goes downhill from there on.  Much later he ends up with Cassie and thinking that there might be a mini-spark he asks her out properly - she responds that she was only feeling sorry for him because of Tracy and she goes home.  Steve has not scored again observing that he knew most of the ladies present and he has lived there too long.

Glenda's on top form this evening and gets these two, a random passing stranger, whom we later learn is Connor and Christine Boyd (Daisy's mum) to become involved.  Glenda later tells Connor that she is only in charge this evening as Jenny and Daisy are both away.  He reckons it must be great being in sole control of a pub.

Paul's tablet is becoming ever more useful - asking Billy for cups of tea and a snog.  For some reason the two of them are in the Rovers during the speed dating, watching the desperate heterosexuality! Paul's replacement voice comments adversely on the events of the evening and in consequence Glenda confiscates the tablet for the evening.

During the speed dating everyone asks Izzy about the chair - the answers were "Shark attack", "Never swim with crocodiles" "Former Trapeze artist with a clown who forgot the safety net".  There is also Trev wandering around with an elephant in his pocket.

Hours later Glenda hears strange noises coming from the bar and comes downstairs to find two men grabbing bottles and all sorts.  She gets pushed to the floor and the two ruffians grab what they can and make rapidly for the exit.  The second half opens with the daylight of a new day and Jenny returning to find a police car on her doorstep.

Along at the Browns' Oakhill Admissions Officer, Dawn (Michaela Longden) lets them know she will be popping by tomorrow - and the house is a worse tip than usual - so they spend the night doing a deep clean.  When Dawn arrives Gemma adopts an impossibly upper class accent and they seek to demonstrate that they are a good family - all the while the new fridge freezer periodically emits ice cubes as the quads have started dismantling it.  They are all very nervous but Chesney sees Dawn out and verbally she confirms that Joseph will be going to the ball Oakhill, thanks to Granny Linda.

Sarah visits Damon and whilst she is prepared to wait for Damon he says it would be wrong.  If he had really loved her he would never have attempted the robbery - and he simply is not worth the wait which Sarah reluctantly accepts.  She consoles herself with alcohol with Bethany in the Bistro.  The following day Sarah asks Adam if they can defer selling the flat for a couple of months - she wants Harry's life to be stabilised.  Adam offers a brew and friendship - Sarah rejects both for now.  Sarah later tells Harry (credited as Freddie and Isaac Rhodes) that Damon will not be returning.  She tells Harry that Damon made a mistake and has to pay for it.

Glenda keeps making light of her experiences claiming to be tough as old boots - but before long we can see that in reality she is suffering badly from recurrent memories.  Out getting fresh air Glenda suffers a panic attack and flashbacks and realises that she can identify one of the ne'er do wells as that Connor and that she was the one who told him that she was there alone.  George surprises her and she attacks him as she is caught up with her memories.  Connor has a swallow on his inside wrist.  George and Jenny seek to re-assure her.  Later Carla praises Glenda, Jenny and Daisy as three brave women after their various attacks in the Rovers (Connor, Stephen and Justin) - still standing and the pub open again.  (All with your money Carla!).  Jenny is looking very sheepish at this point.

Paul would like his tablet back and Glenda is aware that it was taken in the robbery.  Paul is distressed at the loss - knowing that he is losing his speech.

Steve has arranged tea at the Bistro with Amy and she is not ready when he arrives at Preston's Petals so Steve closes and cashes up.  Tommy Orpington chooses that moment to try and talk to Tracy and he has written her a letter which he pushes under the door.  Steve picks it up.

At the end of the day Glenda is fetching drinks for herself, Jenny and Daisy and she has another flashback to the previous night.  She might deny but all is not well.

The good things about tonight - Rovers front and centre, Damon finally gone (I hope), Izzy actually having lines, the ice cubes from the freezer.  Bad things: I hope we are not going to do PTSD again; I hope Paul's tablet or the contents can be recovered (from the cloud?); Gemma's accent (was it necessary?).  No doubt there will be more on Monday!

Coronation Street Episode Review Friday 17 February 2024

At breakfast Maria agrees to return the borrowed laptop to the school and tells Liam to spend the day resting.  Liam unexpectedly turns up at the salon to tell Maria that she is an excellent mother   Once returned by Maria a random teacher (Houmi Miura) checks the search history of the laptop and finds out that Liam has been researching how he might die which she reports to Orla Crawshaw.  The school get hold of Gary and immediately he and Maria head back to the flat where we are all pleased to see that Liam has thought better of it.  Whilst he does not want to be a grass he is given little opportunity as the search history is conclusive proof and has been seen by Mrs Crawshaw.  Mrs Crawshaw promises an investigation and that they will create a safe space for Liam at the school, plus some form of warning for Mason and Dylan if following an investigation there is evidence to support Liam's claims.  Maria considers this inadequate and wants the bullies expelled.  However nothing is ever that simple and of course no evidence exists.  Liam also forgets to repeat the story about Mason threatening him with a knife which we know Dylan has stashed somewhere at Eileen's.  Maria and Gary agree to alternate sleeping on Liam's floor.

With an oversized absolutely final demand for payment from her gas supplier Lauren knows she is up against it.  Alongside this she takes a phone call and tells the caller she does not want money or a present and she is doing fine and the individual should get lost. She decides to return to O-Vidz the online platform from which Ryan had her banned for being underage some months ago.  She gets all dressed up so when Max and Sabrina arrive unexpectedly then she has to admit what she was intending to do - but does not proceed as Bobby arrives.  I might have to admit to an error of judgement.  I was not that struck by Bobby (Bozza) on his first arrival and I am not entirely convinced he has reformed, however he makes a move on Lauren (Lozza) this evening and they kiss and she seems keen - but he makes an error in slipping her top of her shoulder to find that the top of her arm has been heavily and extensively bruised.  She refuses to discuss it and denies it is her "ex-boyfriend".  Bobby meets Max and Sabrina on the Street and they exchange what each knows - but cannot work out what is going on with Lauren.

R'Leanne and R'Toyota rope in R'Gail to start planning the wedding of the millennium - all sorts of exotic locations are considered with all concerned expecting Nick to cough up the air fares.  I have a suggestion that Nick should simply drive Leanne up to Gretna Green and marry her.  It would of course be a repeat of an earlier story involving a young couple with disapproving parents ... hang on a minute that was Nick and Leanne the first time around, this is the third time around!  Perhaps not such a good idea.  Anyway Nick keeps discussing his reluctance to marry Leanne with David - and he will let the moggy out of the sack eventually.  Plattchat is also highly entertaining with regular updates on the discussions and a gif of Daniel O'Donnell.

Tommy Orpington is decorating Preston's Petals and there is banter back and forth with Mary and Tracyluv until Mary observes to Amy that Tracy has been like a bear with a sore head this morning and Mary has no idea what has got into her.  Tommy O pipes up that "It's me". Collapse in laughter for all in this house, followed by a rewind to see that he added "I have been stressing her out with all my questions about her interiors" - which led to further laughs!  She sends Mary off on a 30+ minute walk to get her a poke bowl from the place on Miller Street.  Mary departs and Tracy offers Mr Orpington a visit to her inner sanctum in the back room but he declines the poking opportunity.

Dee Dee has not heard from Joel for about 20 minutes so tells Alya that it is probably all over.  Joel turns up with flowers and later still with a Chicken Caesar salad and Dee Dee realises here fears are baseless.  Alya turns up with a calorie laden taken away, bad mouths Joel and then realises he is hiding out of her eyeshot but in camera shot listening!  Alya makes herself scarce.  Joel and Dee Dee start kissing but unlike Bobby he makes no attempt to undress her and announces he is off.  Clarity then strikes us all.  Apparently Dee Dee is saving herself for her wedding night having given up on carnal relations since discovering God and there will no sex please - we're British.  Eventually he agrees to stay the night on the sofa.  No sign of the woman who has been pestering him for the last week or two to sort out her "legal" problem.

Steve, Tim and Tommy O end up in the Rovers and Amy has to remind Steve that he is supposed to be spending more time with Tracy when he has an afternoon off and not with his male mates - and Amy only knows because Steve tried to use his social media account on SendPX.

In a move with inevitable hilarious consequences Gav has started a window cleaning business.

Tonight in the "you could not make it up department" Mason demonstrated he needs an English teacher referring to Counsellor Connor rather Councillor Windass.  Two wrongs do make a right!  Although I have a feeling she has not actually taken Gary's surname (she remains Maria Connor in the credits) - but would Mason know that?

So Charlie Wrenshall (Liam) played a blinder tonight - well done to him.  Lozza needs help - can Bozza deliver?  Some lovely scripting around Tommy and Tracy, similarly the Plattchat reports were good.  I am not 100% sure about Dee Dee's newly reported faith in God - if this has been mentioned previously it has passed me by.  However as there were no gangster moments I will say it felt much better than last week.

Tommy O Scores With Tracy M : A Classic Corrie Affair Begins?

It’s been a while, I must admit. With work exams and Corrie's schedule changes, I've been using the weekend to get my Weatherfield fix via the ITV hub. I'm old enough to remember the Sunday morning omnibus, and in this digital age, I guess I'm retreating to old formats as I get a little older. That aside, I’ve been so busy that I don't see Corrie during the week, or on live TV, so my Wednesday episode reviews have stalled. In recent weeks, I've been loving the show, and unlike some online criticisms, I struggle to see any real issues with the drama/comedy/ storytelling balance. Resurrecting a few old characters and sweeping dead wood away is a classic soap trope, (it may be long overdue in some Corrie quarters, I agree that) but resurrecting a character or reintroducing one into the show is also a good start.

With Stephen Reid’s recent return and murderous demise, I think I may be a little offside in assuming the same thing will happen with Weatherfield County striker Tommy O, but it is a soap, so who knows?

Reappearing on Christmas day for a scene with Tracy McDonald, I was already aware of the footballer's return (from a 2023 press event), and that he was due to have an affair with a Weatherfield woman. Still, I had no idea who until I saw that scene. I've already seen some online whinging about another ‘affair’ but without character copulation, subterfuge, scandal, and stolen kisses - you've got no drama, and without the drama, you won't have a show - it's that simple. I would also refer the echo-chamber moaners to the classic corrie affairs of old - such as Mike and Deirdre, Peter and Carla, Kevin and Molly, and the recent Tyrone, Fiz, and Phill affair that prove these scenarios also provide the writers with some dramatic content to work with.

Wednesday's snog between Tommy and Tracy is only the beginning (I'd guess). And as Steve returns from Paris this week, he'll surely be too blinded by his adoration for the Weathy County star striker status to realise his hero is also scoring with his wife! But for how long?

Can we envisage a classic Mike and Ken battle between Steve and Tommy, for Tracy’s affections, or will this be more comedic (like Tyrone and Phill), as is usually the tone with Steve Mcdonald of late, and what about Amy? Will she side with her mother (who also slept with Adi’s Dad, Dev) or her father? Will Steve react like Fiz (when she found out about Tyrone’s infidelity) and shack up with someone else? I think Steve would be great with Glenda! Will Steve and Tracy reunite after Tommy transfers to another Weatherfield woman? (Toyah, perhaps)?

Either way, I'm happy to see Tracy get a meaty storyline again ( I adore Kate Ford) and I'd be interested to see how this affair pans out. We may have seen this kind of thing before, but like I say it creates storylines, which we need for the show. As the Corrie (terrestrial TV) schedule changes again this week (football, rugby, or summat), that's worth remembering. Speaking of which, I've got more revision to do.

Ta-ra for now!
