Woman gets legs covered in Coronation Street tattoos

Picture: South Shields Gazette

A woman from South Shields in the north-east has had her legs covered in Coronation Street tattoos.

The Shields Gazette reports that Corrie fan Rebecca Haynes has shown her love for the soap by covering both her lower legs with tattoos devoted to Coronation Street.

Elsie Tanner, Deirdre Rachid, Richard Hillman, the Rovers Return and even the flying ducks from Hilda Ogden's mural all make an appearance. So too does local newspaper The Weatherfield Gazette and its front page devoted to the show's devastating 2010 tram crash.

Rebecca, 32, from South Shields, said: "People may think I'm crackers although I don't think it is any different to showing your love for your favourite football team. People around here may have Sunderland tattoos or Newcastle United tattoos and no-one says anything."

Corrie fan has Weatherfield Gazette tattooed on legs

If I've learned anything from over ten years of editing the Coronation Street Blog, it's that Coronation Street fans like to express their love of our favourite telly show in many different - and unusual - ways.

For Coronation Street fan Rebecca Haynes, it's getting iconic scenes and the Weatherfield Gazette tattooed on her legs!

Rebecca's posted these pictures to Twitter today, saying "It's only taken around 4-5 years but we're nearly finished. Only 1 more sitting to go. Some say I'm crazy, well let them!"

Inked Corrie fan to replicate tattoo in memory of Martyn Hett

Martyn Hett and his amazing Deirdre tattoo
Today marks two weeks since the Manchester attacks that claimed the lives of 22 individuals attending an Ariana Grande concert in the city that night. Whilst we were all utterly devastated at the news here at the Coronation Street Blog, the fact that our friend and guest contributor Martyn Hett was one of the victims brought the situation much closer to home than we ever imagined.

In the days following the news of his passing we dedicated several posts, including this one to Martyn. I plan to pay tribute to our truly iconic Martyn myself sometime soon, though I'm still finding it difficult to put into words how much I valued our friendship.

So far, a charity set up by the Manchester City Council and the British Red Cross, We Love MCR, has raised over 6 million pounds to support those who were affected by the terrorist attack on 22nd May. There has been an incredible amount of fundraising, and a lot specifically in Martyn Hett's name, including the sale of t-shirts bearing his likeness that has raised £5,800.

And another fundraiser is Corrie fan Rebecca Haynes (who is on Twitter @rebeccahaynes25), whose love of the show sparked some rather impressive tattoos of the Rovers Return, Elsie Tanner, Hilda's ducks and Corrie quotes around one of her legs. In Becca's own words, here's what she is planning to do in memory of Martyn:

"I have really been affected by the horrible events in Manchester, and especially when I learnt fellow Corrie fan Martyn Hett lost his life. Although I had never met Martyn Hett, I was both sad and annoyed. How dare someone think they have the right to take a life? I share something in common with Martyn, not only for my love of the street but I too have Corrie tattoos. I want to pay tribute to Martyn and get his Deirdre tattoo in the same place (although on the opposite leg). I'd love to raise some money for the We Love Manchester charity by doing this."

Connor McIntyre is just one of the many stars she's met
Becca's incredible tattoos with a fantastic attention to detail
Becca is all booked in for her tattoo at the end of July, and more information on her fundraising can be found on her Just Giving page where you can also donate if you wish to.

I think it's an absolutely wonderful thing Becca is doing and I'm sure Martyn would have been over the moon - I'll follow up this post with the end results sometime in August!

Canadian Corrie fan covers wife with Coronation Street tattoos

Crikey.  I'm almost lost for words here.

The Manchester Evening News report today that Canadian Coronation Street fan Steve Pearce has covered his wife Lindsay in tattoos of the soap's cast.

Steve, who runs his own tattoo studio in Calgary, has tattooed Corrie character faces onto his wife Lindsay’s leg.

The pair, who say their shared love of Weatherfield helps keep their marriage together, took on the project ahead of a visit to Manchester this year. They will be finishing the inky masterpiece in front of an audience at the Tattoo Tea Party, held at Event City near the Trafford Centre over three days from February 28 to March 1.

Well, that's inspired me! I'm off out to get my Fat Brenda tattoo done, she's going all the way down my smoking arm.

The truth behind Kym Marsh's tattoo

Emails regularly come in to the blog asking if there's a meaning behind Kym Marsh's tattoo. Kym, as Coronation Street fans will know, plays Michelle Connor in Corrie.

Well, in a 2002 edition of OK! magazine, Kym was quoted saying this about one of her tattoos. Apparantly, she got it for her husband, Jack Ryder.

Q: "You've got a new tattoo, which spells Jack in Chinese. Was it a surprise for him?"

Kym: "Yes, I'd been away for a few days to see my family and I went to the tattooist who did my other tattoos. I asked him what the symbol for Jack was - I always check because it could mean egg fried rice! It was very painful."

Jack and Kym have now split and Kym is rumoured to be marrying this fella.
