The Week In Classic Corrie

MONDAY - Episodes originally broadcast 24th and 26th March 1997

Angie decided to get her own back on Kbec for dumping her by telling Mike that they knew he was making fake goods.  He sacked all his workforce before Trading Standards got a whiff of what he was up to.  He fretted to Alma that he might go to prison, but he still had to get rid of the dodgy stuff.  However fate - in the form of Don Brennan - intervened.  While clearing out Josie's stuff he found her factory keys and decided to punish Mike for firing the machinists and ruining his life.  He let himself in and burned the building to the ground.  Alan tried to apologise to Fiona for hiding her from his racist mates but she refused to listen.  He proposed to her to show how committed he was and she finally accepted when he declared his devotion.  Less devoted were Maxine and Ashley; she was embarrassed by him and his butcher's outfit, but her running hot and cold upset him.  Des set off on his canal boat adventure, letting Angie take over his house and car while he was away.  Derek took him to the canal basin and waved him off with a smile and a handshake.  After years of rowing they seemed to finally be pals.

TUESDAY - Episodes originally broadcast 28th and 30th March 1997

Mike and Alma arrived to the smoking remains of the factory.   The fire investigation officer interrogated him, and when a Trading Standards officer turned up, Mike gleefully told him there was nothing left.  Don realised that Baldwin was going to be quids in when the insurance paid out so he anonymously called the police and told them Mike was responsible.  The police picked him up but as he was innocent he wasn't worried.  However, Alma was less convinced; the timing was all too convenient for her, and despite Mike's protestations, she told him she didn't believe him.  Andy was called into his tutor's office and told that if he didn't get his act together he'd end up with a terrible degree.  He drowned his sorrows, which seems to be his answer to everything these days.  He upset Fiona in the pub so she went to see Jim to see if there was anything she could do to help.  Trust me, Fi, stay well away from Jim.  Maxine decided she'd only go out with Ashley if he treated her right and demanded he take her to a nice nightclub and ply her with drinks.  When a couple of her mates appeared though she pretended he was her cousin, and he realised she was ashamed of him.  He left her to it.

WEDNESDAY - Episodes originally broadcast 31st March and 2nd April 1997

Alan took Fiona to meet his parents.  She bonded with his mum over how much work he did and how he ignored his private life.  Red flag, much?  Sally's mum had a stroke so the Websters went to see her; Sally stayed behind in Scarborough to take care of her and Kevin returned alone.  He was met by Natalie, who'd left her philandering husband and decided to get more involved in the running of the garage.  And not just the business, if you know what I mean.  Mike turned detective, chasing up ex-members of staff who might've had a grudge.  He realised that Josie would've had a key and confronted Don.  Don confessed to starting the fire, saying he wanted Baldwin to know it was him since there was no way he could prove it.  Audrey went to the cafe to help out since Roy was full of cold.  She spent most of her shift flirting with lorry drivers because she's ace.

THURSDAY - Episodes originally broadcast 4th April 1997

Steve got out of prison on a home visit (is that a thing?) just in time for Fiona's engagement party.  He insisted on going, despite Jim and Andy saying that was a really bad idea.  She needed the numbers because her brother Lee refused to attend, angry that she was marrying a policeman.  Steve was upset to see her with Alan.  Andy got drunk - again - and told Alan that it was his fault he'd been threatened with a gun and his life was going to pieces.  Alan tried to throw him out but Steve intervened and carried him out - wishing Fiona good luck with her neanderthal fiancĂ© on the way.  Don was interrogated by the police, but without any evidence, there was nothing they could do, and his suicide letter and aggressive answering machine message had gone up in smoke.  Mike was left frustrated and angry. Derek was under pressure as Norris had taken on a younger salesman who was showing him up.  He ran around desperately trying to prove he still had it.

FRIDAY - Episodes originally broadcast 6th and 7th April 1997

Mike continued his secret agent antics, sticking a microphone in his coat pocket to try and get Don to confess on tape.  Don saw through it and laughed in his face.  In the pub, Mike told Ashley what his landlord had got up to, but Ashley didn't believe him.  He asked Don about it and, drunk, he admitted to burning the factory down - though next morning he pretended it was a joke.  Liz came round to number 11 for a family lunch with Steve and Jim and Andy.  Andy was disgusted at the pretence and went into town to get drunk.  Steve followed to keep an eye on him but Andy ended up chatting up the wrong bloke's girlfriend and got into a fight.  Steve tried to calm things down, but he ended up bearing the brunt of the violence, and had to go to hospital with a fractured cheekbone.  Worse, it made him late for his return to prison, and he got an extra fourteen days on his sentence as punishment.  Jim had a go at Andy for being selfish, but he was even more disgusted later when he learned Andy was dropping out of university.

Angie, the rampant saucebox, invited Chris to stay on her sofa instead of kipping in the garage because she fancied the pants off him.  She suggested that he move in with her as a lodger.  Tricia and Ray were getting closer and, realising it was better to accommodate her new romance than drive her away, Jack agreed to look after the baby while they went on a date.  When Ray came round to visit the next day he got on like a house on fire with Jamie which made Tricia like him even more.  But the saddest story came with Mavis's birthday.  She was holding a party to celebrate but Derek was mithering about the new salesman showing him up and worked so hard he ended up being late.  He called her on his mobile and said he'd be an hour which left her exasperated and she accused him of being inconsiderate and spoiling her birthday.  As he drove home, he was distracted by Gilbert and Sullivan and cut up an upper-class twit in a 4x4 at some traffic lights.  The man chased after him and confronted him on a side road.  They ended up rowing and the other driver clouted Derek's paperclip.  As he drove away, Derek clutched his chest, fell into the car, and died.  Now I've never been a fan of the dithering Derek, but this was a nasty end for him.  Thelma Barlow had handed in her notice and the producers decided to dispose of Peter Baldwin as well.  The nice thing to do would've been to have the Wiltons retire together away from the Street, but they went for maximum drama, which left pretty much everyone - cast and audience - unhappy.  Derek deserved better.

The Week In Classic Corrie

MONDAY - Episodes originally broadcast 7th and 9th March 1997

If you thought Fraser's arrest would mean the end of that tedious plotline, I've got bad news for you.  His wife turned up at the incredibly 90s city centre flat and told Liz he'd been arrested.  Deirdre advised her to use it as a clean break, but she still had feelings for him, and was glad when his henchman Gerry turned up to watch over her.  However, she got a phone call from Fraser in prison, warning her that Gerry was a nutter and she should get away.  She fled through the back alleys, at one point hiding under a load of cardboard in a skip, which I found far funnier than I think the director intended. Liz ended up on the Street, begging Jim to help her.  He took her in the house but Gerry appeared in the back with a shotgun, part of a long tradition of the residents of number 11 getting threatened with a shooter by a nutjob.  Ken and Sue were summoned to a Governor's meeting, making them both afraid they were going to lose their jobs, so Ken found Audrey and asked her to plead his case to Alf.  Sue told Ken he wasn't all that as a teacher and she only kept him on because she fancied him.  Tricia brought a fella back to the Rovers after hours, Ray, and Jack told Vera he suspected he might be Brad's real father.  Ray incidentally is played by Doctors stalwart and murderer of Ernie Bishop Chris Walker.  At a practice for the parachute jump, Sean fell badly and sprained his ankle, meaning he couldn't go ahead.  Des was forced to go on without him, which worried Claire, who was thinking about her dead husband.

TUESDAY - Episodes originally broadcast 10th and 12th March 1997

The siege continued at number 11, with Gerry threatening to kill Liz.  When his getaway car arrived, he was finally distracted enough for Jim to attack him, wrestling him to the ground.  The gun went off and blew a hole in the ceiling but with the help of Liz's high heel they got him under control and Andy wandered outside and asked for someone to call the police.  The next day Andy was cold towards Liz because her shenanigans got the family in danger.  What was lovely was we saw the effect of the violence on the community.  Emily was traumatised, thinking of Ernest's death, while the pub was atwitter with gossip.  Kevin and Rita then lead a clean-up of the McDonalds' lounge while they were at the police station.  Des and Samantha went ahead with their parachute jump and were disappointed when they got back to the Rovers and found they'd been upstaged by a shotgun.  Des went to see Samantha the next day about the charity money and found her fresh out the shower.  He tried it on with her, so she invited him upstairs... then chucked his trousers out the bedroom window.  He went to retrieve them, in full view of the neighbours - including Claire, who went off in a huff.

WEDNESDAY - Episodes originally broadcast 14th and 16th March 1997

Claire was understandably disgusted with Des and immediately started packing up her things.  Becky was upset to hear about his philandering as she hoped she'd got a real home.  They got in a taxi and left the Street, and to be honest, they won't be missed, because they were boring as heck.  (Claire will return for a one-off appearance in unhappy circumstances).  Samantha told Sean what happened so he sacked Des, then Becky came back and had an emotional scene in the middle of the Street.  Somehow Des decided this was all Sam's fault.  Ken went to the governor's meeting only to be told the whole matter was closed: Sue Jeffers had taken all responsibility and resigned.  Ken was relieved to be exonerated - because he's horribly self-centred - but was then informed that further cuts were needed so he was being made redundant anyway.  Since it's her final appearance I should point out that Sue Jeffers' real name is Romy Baskerville, which is magnificent.  Also, this was Alf's last appearance until November - Bryan Moseley sadly had a heart attack and was forced to take time off.  Fraser was released from prison, and he reunited with Liz, asking her to provide him with an alibi on the night of the robbery.  Andy was disgusted with her.  He knocked back the booze and cut his hand and Jim had to rescue him.  Tricia argued with Jack and Vera over her nights out and they refused to babysit any more.  She threatened to leave, and when they said that might be a good idea, she panicked.  Tricia went to Blackpool to see the Hortons, telling them that Brad was Tommy's half-brother and asking if they knew where Terry was.  They told her she was best off without him.  Meanwhile the Duckworths fretted about her disappearance, and in looking through her papers for where she might have gone, Jack discovered that she'd left the father's name blank on the birth certificate.  Vera told her she could stay as long as she liked but Jack looked concerned.

THURSDAY - Episodes originally broadcast 17th and 19th March 1997

Liz was called in for questioning but she was soon let out.  Fraser was delighted, and decided to sell the Hour Glass and move with his moll to the Costa del Crime.  A thrilled Liz went round telling her family and friends and they all thought she was nuts.  She went to see Steve and he told her he was impressed that Fraser got away with the robbery.  Because Liz is really quite thick this came as a shock to her and she went back to him and told him she wouldn't be taken for a mug.  Fraser had enough of her whining, threatened to break her teeth and went off to Spain without her.  Jack was suspicious of Trisha when he learned she hadn't reported Terry to the Child Support Agency, adding to his worries that Terry wasn't the dad.  Ray came round to visit and to Jack's surprise he turned out to know Trisha and Jamie from way back.  He suspected he was the real father.  Sally started work in the shop, but Maud was upset to learn she was there full-time, not just in the evenings.  She thought she was being pushed out and felt useless, though Maureen was just trying to lighten the load on her elderly mum.

FRIDAY - Episodes originally broadcast 21st and 23rd March 1997

Ring the bells, fire off the fireworks, start a parade: Angie Freeman is back on the Street and she proved how brilliant she was in roughly twelve minutes.  She ran into a dishevelled Des and took the mick, only for Sally in the shop to tell her all about his antics with Samantha.  She turned up on his doorstep with a load of sandwiches and a bottle of red and cheered him up.  It turned out she'd been let go by Kbec and was looking for work.  Des poured his heart out and wondered what he was doing with his life, and Angie encouraged him to strike out and go adventuring on his canal boat.  Maybe Des could nip off to Central Africa and see if he could flog a few tanks.  Liz went on another tour of the Street announcing she was staying but Andy didn't care; he said she was an embarrassment and he didn't want to know.  Fiona went out for a drink with Alan and they ran into one of his colleagues.  They were the first of his workmates she'd ever met and she realised he seemed embarrassed.  Fiona accused him of being ashamed of her because she's black.  He said he wasn't racist, but some of his colleagues were, and he was trying to shield her.  Fiona became upset that her race was an issue, and that he'd rather hide her away than be proud.  It was a really interesting, powerful storyline, very well acted by Angela Griffin.  Kevin found Chris sleeping on the floor of the garage which upset Sally.  She invited him to sleep on their sofa until he found somewhere more permanent.  Maxine persuaded Ashley to model for her and, as they chatted, she found herself kissing him.  Next thing they were romping in the back room.  And Vera told Don that Josie had remarried, to a doctor from the medical centre.  Don decided that it was all Mike Baldwin's fault...

Classic Corrie next week will be a heady mix of tragedy and excitement.  Things are really going to take a turn.  Be sure to watch and let me know what you think on Twitter @merseytart.

The Week In Classic Corrie

MONDAY - Episodes originally broadcast 21st and 23rd February 1997

Tony was skipping work because he'd bought himself a new car: a bright red hot hatch that he revved round the Street.  Kev was left holding the business.  Tony burned round the back streets and while he was looking down at his radio, he smacked into a pedestrian - Joyce Smedley.  She'd asked Judy to walk her dog for her, but she'd been distracted by a little bit of fun with Gary, so Joyce had been left to do it after dark.  Judy was distraught and blamed herself for her mum's death.  Samantha went to Firman's for some shopping and Anne stopped her at the checkouts and accused her of shoplifting.  She'd planted an item in Samantha's bag, but Vanessa the vet from Emmerdale popped up as an assistant and revealed she saw Anne do it.  Eric summoned Curly to Firman's so he could apologise and be present when he sacked Anne.  She swore revenge.  At the Hour Glass (where a very young Vernon Kaye could be spotted having a pint) Liz slept with Fraser.  She told Alan she wouldn't spy on her boss-slash-lover any more, but he told her he could cancel Steve's parole if she didn't.  She went to see Steve in prison and he revealed that Fraser was married, but Fraser said they were separated, and she was the one for him.

TUESDAY - Episodes originally broadcast 24th and 26th February 1997

Tony called on the Mallets and admitted he was the one who hit Joyce.  Judy was rightfully furious and refused to listen to his excuses.  Tony hid away from everyone as he felt guilty and his mum came round to see Kevin to explain he was never coming back.  And you know who his mum is, of course: noted virologist Denise Welch as shameless hussy Natalie Horrocks.  Natalie said it was her money that bought Tony's half so she'd continue as a silent partner.  She promised not to interfere in the garage, but made no similar promises about his marriage.  Meanwhile Judy couldn't bear to see Scamper the dog any more because she blamed him for Joyce's death so she demanded Gary take him to the vets to be put down.  Understandably Gary didn't fancy it and got Vera to look after him while he tried to persuade Judy to change her mind.  Liz was wandering round the Street dressed as a gangster's moll and clutching a mobile phone.  Andy saw her kissing Fraser and was disgusted with her.  Meanwhile Fiona discovered that Alan had been working with Liz, and when she overheard that Liz was now sleeping with Fraser, she went to see Steve in prison.  (Incidentally they must have a really good barber in Strangeways because Steve had a great haircut).  He worried that he'd get beaten up if Fraser discovered Liz was a double agent and phoned her in a panic to tell her to be careful.  Alan confessed to Fiona that it wasn't an official operation so there was no protection for Liz and Steve.  And Roy got rid of the fruit machines from the cafe, because they encouraged gambling, though he kept the jukebox (and wished he could put the Shangri-La's in it instead of Bryan Adams; you and me both, Roy).  I notice his principles didn't extend to getting rid of the fag machine as well.

WEDNESDAY - Episode originally broadcast 28th February 1997

Jack tried to return Scamper but it was the day of the funeral so Gary asked him to keep him a little longer.  Tony turned up at the service, then visited Kevin at number 13 and admitted how bad he felt.  Afterwards, Gary brought Scamper back, and seeing him made Judy cry.  She cuddled him close.  Alan was jealous of Steve and Fiona's past but he agreed to cool it with his pursuit of Fraser.  Liz meanwhile was moving in with him.  However, Liz dropped a bit of paper with Alan's phone number on it, and Fraser found it.  He then returned home and found her hunting through his briefcase...

THURSDAY - Episode originally broadcast 2nd March 1997

The low-rent version of The Departed continued as Alan called on Fraser's wife.  It turned out Fraser hadn't actually informed her he was off with another woman.  She phoned him up, which came as a handy distraction from him interrogating Liz about the phone number in her pocket.  Liz was still scared by how angry he'd got.  Don got drunk in the pub and when he saw Mike's Jag outside he scratched it with his car keys.  Unfortunately it wasn't actually Mike's car and he sloped off, embarrassed.  Des continued to refuse to do the parachute jump, but when Derek defended him, it was the final straw and Des signed up.

FRIDAY - Episodes originally broadcast 3rd and 5th March 1997

Be still my beating heart.  Matthew Marsden as Chris Collins turned up and applied for the vacancy at the garage.  He impressed Kevin with his mechanical skills and he impressed me with his general hotness.  Meanwhile Derek was convinced he was a homeless person because he was wearing beaten up army fatigues and rolling his own ciggie.  Alf and Audrey returned from their holiday to find all change in the Street.  When Gail told Audrey that Roy now owned the majority of the business she was convinced he'd run it into the ground.  Audrey volunteered to help out, so Roy suggested she take the slops out the back for the pig man, and she left in a huff - which amused Gail.  Meanwhile Alf received a visitor, the wife of a teacher at Wethy High who'd been made redundant.  She demanded that Alf reverse his decision as one of the Governors because Sue had only saved Ken because they were having an affair.  Alf defended Ken, and told him about the gossip, which Ken assured him wasn't true.  However, Audrey spoke to Deirdre and discovered the truth, leaving a furious Alf to confront Ken for making a liar of him.  (Bryan Moseley looks noticeably more ill in his scenes, sadly).  Fraser and his henchman Gerry watched over a robbery, but the police turned up and stopped it.  Gerry was convinced Liz must have grassed them up and he discovered that the Alan on the bit of paper was a policeman and the boyfriend of Fiona.  Fraser lost his temper and confronted Liz, and she admitted she'd been asked to spy on him, but she'd told Alan nothing.  Fraser believed her, but Gerry didnt - and then Alan turned up to arrest him...

This whole gangster business is absolutely terrible.  If you have an explanation for why Corrie keeps doing these rubbish Long Good Friday rip-offs please let me know on Twitter @merseytart.
