Calum Lill Talks To Corrie Blog: "Joel’s worst is still to come…”

Our latest Coronation Street Blog Cast Chat is with the show's newest villain Joel Deering, actor Calum Lill. Joining the show a year ago as Lauren’s Duty Solicitor & Dee-Dee Bailey's new love interest, some crafty Corrie foreshadowing has now resolved Lauren’s disappearance/murder plot, revealing Joel as a villainous groomer and attacker of women!

On June 24th I sat in a media suite at ITV Corrie studios, to listen to Calum, who told us about this surprising turn in Corrie's storytelling.

Hi Calum!

Have you had much reaction from the public since Joel's secret was revealed?

“I never got noticed before that! It came out on a Thursday, and I went to a service station on a Friday and felt like I’d got three heads!”

Was it a relief to have some secrets out in the open?

"Yes, it's been over a year. I was asked what I was doing when going into Corrie and I just said ‘’nothing, just being a solicitor”. It was nice to have a bit of it come out (on screen) and for it not to get leaked in the press

Was Joel worried Lauren would re-appear in Weatherfield, or did he think she was dead?

“No, I think his immediate worry was that the police were going to find her (in the flat) and he was going to be arrested. So when the police don't find her in the flat, he thinks she must be alive, but he’s just waiting for her to go to the police. From keeping his head down, back to that arrogance of thinking he’d got away with it. His chickens have come home to roost. He's got a lot to lose!

What was it like filming those flashback episodes?

"It was nice to know what had gone on behind the scenes! You usually go off the script, and he’s this nice guy, but off-camera I knew all of this with Lauren, but I didn't know what. The scripts don't come out until two weeks before filming - then I found out it would be really dark. We’d stayed late at the studio until 9 or 10 pm every night going through those scenes, line by line, to work out exactly what had gone on between them. We did the attack scene in December, and it was the first time I'd worked with Cait (Fitton, Lauren Bolton) aside from a brief scene at the start of the show - then our next scene, I’m kicking her head in!”

Is it different playing Joel now that the secrets are out?

“I don't think I play him differently. It’s just that we now see a different side. It was always happening, just that we didn't see it on screen. Now I can play a scene, where we know he’s lying, so I developed ticks, postures, and gestures, so I knew it was happening, but maybe the viewers did not. We now know he’s a bit more manipulative!”

How does he feel when he realises that Lauren is pregnant?

“He knows that he can't deny that he's slept with her - the proof he doesn't need. Again, he’s seeing this life falling apart (in front of him). Even if the only thing that comes out is that he had consensual sex with her, his life is still over. It's all up in the air. It makes it way more serious. He is very selfish - we haven't seen the worst, yet - this will push him to the extremes

Thanks, Calum!

Cait Fitton On Lauren’s Return: "It Was Mental!"

On 24th June 2024, I sat in the cinema at the Coronation Street Experience, alongside the assembled Corrie cast and soap journos’  to watch last night's episode (09th July - Ep 11309/10) in its entirety. Sitting in a cinema watching an episode of Coronation Street, whilst cast members are in the audience watching it with you, is superbly surreal, and a bucket-list fanboy moment to treasure.

Lauren's return was quite the surprise, and following the episode’s exclusive airing, we headed to a floor 3 media suite* where actress Cait Fitton (who plays Lauren) was interviewed about her character's shock-fuelled return!

READ ON!

Hi Cait,

The truth is out and Lauren is alive! How difficult has it been to keep that a secret?

It's been mental and so much fun! I knew, early on, that I was returning, which is very fortunate in this industry. I started filming again in April, and had to sneak in and out of the building with Cal (Callum Lill, who plays Joel) having to put me in his car boot to make sure we weren't being seen - it was chaotic. I’ve had to get on the floor of taxis when leaving and it’s been a whirlwind of emotions. We filmed on location for some scenes, and I was hiding in a big black coat and sunglasses - luckily I wasn't seen”

Tell us what's coming up for Lauren. Why has she only returned now?

“She wanted to put the trauma to the back of her mind and move on. She rushes the process though. Since she left Weatherfied, she's been going from hostel to hostel, sleeping homeless, and not being able to pay the rent, so she’s been getting booted out of different hostels. She’s not been able to come back as she doesn’t know where Joel is: he could be in Weatherfield or away from Weatherfield, but she doesn't want to take that risk. It was a near-death experience and she doesn’t want to face that again. Only when she hears that Roy is in the hospital, it’s affected him physically, so she decides to go back to put things right. She's in survival mode ”

When did you find out about this element of Lauren’s story?

“When I started in 2022, Lauren was supposed to be just a three-part character / three-month stint as a supporting role in Max’s far-right storyline. I didn't know much about her, I knew things were being aired on screen, but I didn't know why she was the way she was. Coming in as a supporting character, you don’t get that opportunity. Was she a racist or was this inherited from her Dad?  I then got asked back and little hints of what she’d been through rose to the surface. I think I found out about this latest element just before Cal started, but I did not know how long it would go on for, or tense it would have been”

How would you sum up Lauren’s character?

“Strong, very strong, and very caring. She doesn't trust (a lot of) people, but the people she does trust, she cares about a lot. She was very naive and a different person before she left. If anything she doesn't trust anyone now, even those she had a bond with. It will take a long time to break down those barriers. She's a brilliant character to play. She's a lost little girl and from the wrong side of the tracks”

Lauren’s return also reveals that she’s pregnant!! How does she feel about that?

“She’s never had unconditional love, so she doesn't know what that is. But, with a child, her child, she's that child's role model and that baby’s going be with her through everything. She's got someone that's going to love her unconditionally”

How does she feel about Joel’s reaction?

“She’s petrified, terrified, as she knows what this man can do. She knows he won't stop at anything and now it's not just her she’s got to worry about, it's the baby as well. She wants to keep the baby safe but because of his authority and power, and the fact she’s from the wrong side of the tracks, she’s worried it (the baby) could be taken from her”

Thanks, Cait!

* I've got some superb behind-the-scenes photos. I'll share them in a separate post.

Lauren returns and wants Max back? Corrie Blog interviews Cait Fitton

Fresh from his STC release, Max Turner's hardly kept himself under house arrest upon returning to Weatherfield life. He’s riled Alya by letter bombing Speed Daal and gained a new love interest with Bec, the girlfriend of his cell-mate who is still inside. With revelations of his racist past still causing repercussions, you’d think things couldn't get any worse for the troubled youngster, but this week sees the return of his former beau, Lauren Bolton!

In tonight's episode (June 26th) Gav is back at the precinct, having been released from the STC, announcing his intention to marry Bec. When Max reveals that Bec has moved on, and she’s going out with Max now, Gav’s furious. Later, the lovebirds share a kiss but don't realise they are being watched by Lauren.

On Wednesday, Max is shocked when Lauren approaches, revealing that she fell out with her Mum, wants nothing more to do with her Dad (or his right-wing mates), and spent last night kipping in the bus station. Max takes her to the café for a catch-up. He then learns that the CPS want him to make a statement against Griff, which Spider encourages. Lauren then makes a move on Max. Has she returned to try and save Griff, or does she still have feelings for Max?

In my latest Coronation Street cast chat, we spoke with actress Cait Fitton (who plays Lauren) about her character's return. Cait told us ‘I think, deep down she (Lauren) craves attention and wants that affection. It's sad as she’s never had that. She doesn't understand compassion or empathy, because of her background, and how she’s been brought up'

Lauren is also a victim of grooming by her own Dad. Will we see her still under his influence, or has she changed in light of what has happened to Max?

She’s been away for six months, and gone through these experiences that would change a person. I think she just wants to be accepted now. She wants to be taken away from what she was known for, and what her Dad was known for, and she just wants to be herself. But, she can't do that on her own. I think acceptance for Lauren is a big thing and she’s willing to show everybody she has changed.

What does she want from Max?

She’s desperate. Her relationship with her Mum is so toxic, she hasn't got that mother/daughter bond with her. She has no friendship groups and her dad’s in prison. She’s no safety net and needs Max’s help

How does she feel seeing Max with Bec?

It's hard for her because there are so many emotions. She’s a ticking time bomb who puts a front on. She’s instantly hurt, shocked, and betrayed; feelings that are all relevant on this occasion, but she’s suppressing her feelings and there’s a chance she will explode. She wants Max to be happy. Lauren was used as bait in the right-wing plot and feels guilty, but is heartbroken at seeing him with Bec. She’s no malice against Bec, it's just devastating for her!

***

Personally, I'm glad to see her back. Normally (being 40 + years old) I don't get too enamoured with these teenage storylines, but the right-wing grooming plot drew a lot of the ensemble cast together, and I liked it a lot! I may be biased due to my crush on Sair Khan (Alya Nazir) but it is what it is! Anyway, I digress. Could the reformed former bad-boy be drawn back into a romance with Lauren, or (as I suspect) is she being used as bait again in the final hope of somehow mitigating Griff’s sentencing?

Watch Coronation Street tonight to find out - it looks to be another great week on the cobbles!
