Corrie Canine Chaos Sparks Danger For Evelyn & Cassie!

This week on Coronation Street we saw battle-axe Evelyn Plummer confront the mistreatment of a dog outside Roy's Rolls. As the storyline hit our screens, my mind took me back to October of this year when we (and fellow press) spoke to Corrie producer Iain Macleod, who told us all about it:

Hi Iain, what's this latest Evelyn storyline all about? 

''Evelyn makes herself a bit of an enemy in the shape of a man she sees mistreating his dog. It starts with a relatively small exchange where they cross paths at the precinct, some crosswords exchanged! Iain continued ''it goes from there to a situation of court appearances and trips to the hospital, with some danger for Evelyn and Cassie!''

How did this story come about? 

‘'It was an opportunity to do two things really - N0.1 was to see Maureen (Lipman- Evelyn) be strident, kicking backsides and taking names, but also’’ Iain continued ‘’to give us a chance to explore more, her relationship with Cassie. Since Cassie was a teenager, their relationship has been nonexistent - what has existed has been very bad-tempered with lots of estrangement. This is an opportunity to explore their dynamic and this story puts them on the same team'' 

How does this affect Evelyn's relationship with Cassie? 

''Cassie, as is her preference, takes things too far, which causes serious strife for her'' said Iain, '' and at the end of it, they reach a new level of understanding and equilibrium. They get to know each other in an adult relationship, probably for the first time’’.

What is Roy’s involvement in all of this? 

''the story that starts rather innocuously, almost comically, with Roy and Evelyn facing off with this man mistreating his dog. Suddenly, we find ourselves in a rather serious story! Iain enthused, ''I love stories like that, that starts as an acorn of something, then a forest of bad outcomes for our favourite characters! ''

Fiz and Phill’s Wedding Day Chaos? Corrie Blog chats to Jennie McAlpine

A summer wedding is always something to look forward to, isn't it? In recent Covid years, we Corrie viewers have been starved of any big cast ensemble event, so it's with some excitement that I look forward to Phill & Fiz's big day. Fiz however, has some hesitations and hurdles to cross before then!! 

Beset with DIY disasters at their posh new house, Fiz's pre-wedding jitters go into overdrive as she faces up to more Phill-sized problems! Firstly, matriarchal Mimi returns to cause more trouble, and then Phill's beautifully posh ex-wife Camilla arrives on the scene! Could she be a catalyst that stops the big day from happening? That could also be said of Tyrone though, who is encouraged by Kevin to tell Fiz his true feelings. Meanwhile, Cerebus causes Evelyn and Mimi to clash. Will the ceremony even go ahead? As I write this, I'm reminded of Eva and Aidan's big day, so let's hope that's not an ominous thought! 

With all of that in mind, I was ecstatic to be invited to an ITV Corrie press day to chat with Jennie McAlpine, who plays Fiz, to learn more about it! 

Hi Jennie, great to speak to you again. How does Fiz feel as the wedding day approaches?  

Fiz is sure that this is the right thing for her and that this is what is right. If Tyrone hadn't cheated, things would have been different, but of course, Phill is a lot better for her and is the antithesis of Ty. Fiz has no more doubts now. 

Mimi makes a return for the wedding. She caused a bit of trouble the last time she was on the street. How are things between her and Fiz now? 

Well, she wasn't nice the last time she was on the street, was she? Phill finally stood up to her and sent her on her way. Fiz is dreading her arrival, and thinks it's will be the same as last time. If you remember, it was the planning of Phill’s birthday, which she took over, but the wedding's a million times bigger! She (Mimi) is out to cause chaos and sabotage the wedding. 

Does Fiz think that Mimi will put a stop to the wedding?

Yes, I think she does - Evelyn certainly does. It doesn't surprise Fiz that Mimi may try and scupper the wedding. It doesn't go well. 

Phill’s ex-wife Camilla also arrives! Does this unsettle Fiz? Does she worry that there could still be feelings between Phill and his ex? 

Yes. Deep down she’s still quite fragile since Tyrone did that to her. There is an element of disbelief with everything she’s had from Phill, and then his successful ex-wife turns up! She (Fiz) thinks that Phill is going to go back to Camilla and that Fiz will be left on her own. Fiz is low on self-esteem as it is. 

To add to the mix, the registrar is cancelled on the morning of the wedding! Does Fiz feel that her big day is doomed?

Yes, and I think Fiz says exactly that to Evelyn, whilst in the pub! That was one of my lines. I do. I think she thinks it is: that’s a part of how she thinks about herself. It’s as though she thinks she doesn’t deserve the big house and the posh wedding, and that she should have just stuck with the cheating Tyrone, in the first place.  

Whilst she’s feeling vulnerable, Tyrone tells her he still loves her and on the morning of the wedding itself! How does she react? Does this change anything for her? 

No, it doesn't. She just tells him what we've already said before. Had he not cheated on her with Alina, things may have been different. It's not a total shock that Tyrone wants them to get back together - the timing is lousy. However, she still wants to marry Phill and goes ahead with marrying Phill. She takes little notice and carries on with it regardless. Tyrone also gives Fiz a pair of Vera’s beautiful pearl earrings! It's a nice nod to corrie's past, and something else to add to Fiz’s emotional wedding morning.

Coronation Street isn't giving anything away here so we will have to watch and find out if Fiz marries Phill at all? The lead-up to this has included a lot of comedy; Phill and Ty’s fights, staunch matriarchs in the form of Evelyn and Mimi, trouble from Hope, and a tug-of-war for Fiz’s affections. I predict a culmination of all of these factors for the Wedding day episode? 

I shan't be showering the confetti about, just yet!

Coronation Street Episode Review; Weds 12th May 7.30 & 8.30 pm

Abi’s avalanche of emotion over Seb’s death has now seemingly become entrenched, with Corey being suspect N0.1. But are things that clean-cut? 

Tonight, the quagmire of grief continues to cause Abi sleepless nights, with Kevin and Sally worried about her past drug addictions returning to the fore. Igniting a fight against that, Abi continues to chase the police for updates and finds a voicemail from Seb that could hold key evidence in the murder case. Heading straight to the police, Abi replays the message in which you can hear Seb being attacked. The plot is sure to thicken. 

Kelly’s fight or flight instincts are now kicking in, and after Monday night’s revelations, she visits Corey and tells him that she’s thinking of going to the Police. Stefan conveniently interrupts the warring teens and warns Kelly off. Giving his son some clear advice, Corey’s Dad promises to defend his son at all costs.

Meanwhile, Imran and Toyah are contacted by social services, telling them that Kelly’s placement may now be unsuitable, just as Laura makes a reappearance. Ignoring her Mother's unsavoury advice, Kelly is called back by the police anyway. Imran passionately fights her corner, but she decides to go to the cop shop with her Mum. It soon transpires that Laura has returned due to her latest relationship fall-out, and Imran uses this as collateral, attending Kelly’s police meeting in her place. Meanwhile, Corey voluntarily visits the police with his Dad to offer information. The police then tell Kelly that forensics now place her at the scene, and not only that, at the forefront of the attack itself. Imran asks Kelly to come clean about the attack so she tells the police some details but, to me, it still seems to come across as being quite sketchy? She points the finger firmly at Corey until Seb’s voicemail is played. It’s clear that Kelly is laughing in the background of the call, but does that prove anything? Corey has been quick to ditch dirt on her, and by doing it voluntarily, it paints him in a different light. Taking all of this into consideration, the police charge Kelly with assault and murder. Imran promises to stand by her at all costs. Kevin promises Abi the same, as the grieving mother struggles with the latest developments. 

Meanwhile, Summer‘s sunshine spirit has been marred by a Seb shaped cloud and seeks solace in Paul. The sniping comments on social media and the climate at school are getting her down. Summer blames herself for Seb's death but is struggling to speak to Billy about it.  

Evelyn’s return to the cobbles couldn't be more timely, either. Surely Roy can rely on his old friend for compassion and comfort? Maybe not, as Evelyn’s sharply observant belittling of Kirk’s simple demeanour causes Roy to react in anger, and he kicks her out of his cafe. Cancelled by Cropper! Later, Roy apologises to Evelyn for overreacting and exclaims his indifference to society’s intolerance and barbarism. Regaling memories of Hayley’s struggles, Evelyn offers support to Roy’s ever-increasing dismay at modern indifference. Later, Nina finally prepares to leave the hospital but is still struggling to remember the events of the night itself. The injuries of the night are still visible but the emotional scarring underneath may be worse still! 

Elsewhere in tonight’s episodes; the Baileys bring baby Glory home and Ed has finally fixed that staircase. Getting involved in all the baby activity, Micheal also tells his Dad to back off a bit. Ed plans to give them a break by going to see Agi. Ronnie tries to smooth things over but Ed gives his brother short shrift.

Is Corey innocent or is he just pinning the blame on Kelly?

Corrie Comicals week ending 19 February 2021

What do the younger generation say "Chill Grandad" or something similar - so bring back Rosie and Sophie with their offspring and Kev may find himself at home.  Indeed just about everyone got in on the act this week!  However we start with Abi unable to make the vacuum cleaner work - she should be able to do it as she is a mechanic.  However she is clearly not an electrician and with a quick push of the wall socket button (above) Seb, making a rare appearance, demonstrates the basic checks needed before getting into the mechanics!

I am not sure a walk in fridge gave Matt Hilton the best environment in which to show some unusual shots - but Emily Gascoyne hit top form with Debbie asking if the atmosphere is a little frosty and then asking if they can put their disagreement on ice?  Kev is obviously giving her the cold shoulder and her many failings to date are merely the tip of an iceberg!  She reminds Kev that he cheated on his wife and served time for assault, so neither are as pure white as the driven snow!  

Evelyn had a fun time at poor Ty's expense following the reflux episode - which as he pointed out might have been painful but it is not as bad as childbirth!  Ty is now eating Bran Flakes to keep him regular at his age and when he says he is going into town for some things she accuses him of needing dignity pants!  [And if Kev is not in work today and Abi is not in work today - who may I ask is actually mending cars in the garage when Ty goes shopping?].  {We later discover that Ty is taking up running and those of with decent memories might recall another garage owner who took up running with female accompaniment; I wonder if Alina likes exercise?}.

Well we might have had a problem understanding Kev singing Abba but he managed to be perfectly clear in asking for some warmth.  Regrettably covid-jibe time.  Abi had forced the door, Clogs Craig and Flaky Faye were just outside and yet neither of them could actually be bothered to look in to see the Webster family love in!  I hope in real life our police and other emergency services are allowed to assist people in need as this really jarred given the 30 seconds or so that Abi was sobbing having thought she had lost Kev.

Eileen asks Shona to pass on her regards to Gail on the loss of her father; Shona suggests she pops in and sees Gail herself - but Eileen has something far better to do (above).  No doubt we will be revisiting the long running feud - there have been several hints recently and it is definitely bubbling under somewhere there!

For those interested the answer to the question about minimum working temperatures is typically quoted as 16 dec Celsius, although there is no legal limitation as it depends on circumstances; I just hope that it was observed whilst filming in the fridge!  I think I will slide by the rest of the fridge jokes as they just kept going past like a sleigh on the Cresta run.

Mary's "Oh I didn't see you there" received a predictably dusty response from George (above) in Speed Dahl.  Must be the impact of those new screens obscuring your sight Mary!  Most funeral directors I know have offices - I was at a loss on Friday that he seemed to be undertaking his business either in Roy's Rolls or Speed Dahl.  Seems to be a strange way to respect the lately departed but clearly a frame of that size will need to eat regularly.

And finally, sometime in the last couple of weeks the old Council Advice Centre (which was already closed at the point at which the set extension opened) was caught in shot briefly and it had all been boarded up with temporary doors with an additional enclosed area.  Does anyone know why and what is actually behind that particular location?
