Coronation Street Episode Review, Wednesday 7th June, 8 pm

Welcome to another Wednesday Weatherfield round-up and to catch up on the latest goings on, on Coronation Street. I've had a few weeks off as doing press day events usually means I’m weeks in front with storylines and spoilers, but I've now caught up. That said, I've another event in the pipeline so we shall see how this month pans out!

Tonight starts at Sarah and Adam’s Redbank pad, with Adam getting deluged with solicitor work, so he's unable to make the football match with Harry. The late licence is granted but he’s still busy with work, much to his wife’s irritation. Sarah despatches the match tickets to Shona so she finds herself free for the evening. Damon overhears the cafe conversation and heads over to her flat armed with a bottle of vino and a cache of sweet nothings to whisper in her ear.

The clandestine meet is soon interrupted when Gail brings Harry home from school! Sarah's lied about her whereabouts and her mum is quick to spot that something is going off. With Gail out of the way, it’s Harry who sees Sarah actually kissing Damon.

Harry then decides to draw a picture of the event to show his granny! Gail confronts Sarah with the evidence and she admits the truth, and about the fact that she wanted to ruin the late licensing chances. Later, Sarah tells Damon they've been caught and that things must stop, whilst she lies to Harry to shut him up.

Meanwhile, the Baileys haven’t really had much comedy, have they? Ed debuted by knocking a hole through Ken’s living room wall, for the renovations, but we've had little funnies from them since, until now? Fresh from meeting their ex-very posh neighbours at Debbie’s hotel cuisine night, Ed and Aggie are embarrassed about swapping Alderley Edge for Weatherfield and living in squalor at N0.3 (that makeover hasn't done much for them, I guess). Ed tells Dee-dee that they won't stop texting to arrange a posh dinner party, so Agie harangues Tim and Sally into letting them use No.4 for a soiree, instead. A house-swap? I can only guess this will lead to shenanigans, especially since the guest stars playing Patrick and Yvette are both comedy gold.

Elsewhere, Ryan’s suddenly crystal clear with the fact that he’s been catfished and Daisy insists on playing dumb. Carla is hellbent on getting to the bottom of who’s been playing with his emotions. Ryan unloads all of this on Daisy and she blames Justin and Karen.

Back from the STC, Max must wear an electronic tag as part of his licensing conditions. Starting rehabilitation, Max writes a letter for Alya and manages to get it delivered to Speed Daal. Alya's stressed at the solicitors, blowing up in front of Sarah and admits her misery from the Weatherfield race riots and Max’s hand in the violence. Adam offers her some gentle advice. Alya receives the letter and is furious at Max’s indifference, catching him in the street to throw the letter back in his face. Gary splits up the ruckus but lends a sympathetic ear to Max's plight. Gary then tells Alya he’s smoothed things over and Max will now leave her alone. Gav calls Max to arrange a catch-up with his girlfriend, and he arrives home late to the police paying another visit. He’s been spotted visiting Speed Daal! Shona promises to keep a closer hold on him.

In other news, Todd’s still single, David and Glenda got a great scene together, and the charity shop does a great sideline in Dad jokes!

Coronation Street Episode Review, Wednesday 8th February, 8 pm

One foiled terror plot, a stabbing, a murder, and a shooting! It's not even March, yet Corrie seems to be heading into the most crime fuelled year yet?

Tonight is the aftermath of Damon's dodgy drug shipment going awry, and although shots misfired, the dodged bullets have ricocheted into the drama, regardless. Sam, Leanne, and Nick are all feeling the fallout, and the drugs are now at their flat. Nick threatens to dispatch Damon’s drugs unless he picks them up, to which he complies. Surely not, I thought - the bad guy gave up a bit too easy there -, but then my Corrie brain kicked in and no sooner had Damon left the flat when PC Tinker and the cop car pulled up to arrest the drug dealer.

Ryan has an emotional meltdown from the shock of the gunfire, and tells Leanne he fears his life is going nowhere. He later apologises, telling his boss he’d rather stay put, but PC Tinker returns with questions for the Bistro owners. Craig tells the couple what we viewers already knew about Damon’s past. Nick and Leanne play dumb but are still invited down to the cop shop for questioning. Back at the flat, and after questioning, Nick lies to Sam and tells him that Damon is a drug dealer and they knew nothing about it and that he organised the bistro heist. Sam also discovers that Damon is Harvey’s brother, and blames Nick for lying to him. Sam tells his Dad he doesn't want Damon’s DJ gift in the flat and tells Nick to leave as well!

Elsewhere, Eileen (who works in a taxi rank, remember)  and Todd take it into their hands to track down cab driver Mitch to find out what he knows about Laurence. The Mum and Son detective duo ( I preferred Evelyn and Roy, to be honest) soon tracks down Mitch, telling them he thinks Laurence pushed his wife off a mountain, as he was having an affair with him, and she was due to find out. Meanwhile, Laurence and Sean are out for a meal, discussing travel insurance whilst planning a romantic getaway. Back at work, Eileen and Todd visit Sean at the Rovers to tell them what they found out. Sean flounces around, disgusted by their assumptions and accusations, only for Laurence to turn up needing some holiday insurance forms that need signing - he's booked them on a mountain climbing holiday!! With one active murderer on the street, I guess this is all some big misunderstanding to ruin Sean's love life?

Setting up a business meeting, Sarah and Michael need samples stitching up in 24 hours, so they ask Beth Tinker, who’s obviously got some time free now she’s stopped slapping small people. A prediction I got wrong in last week's review, but I don't think we've heard the last of that yet. Anyway, back to tonight. Of course, Beth is free to do a side hustle and arranges an illicit night at the factory, whilst Adam feels inspired by a chat with Sam, telling Sarah he’s ready for them to have a child! Sarah refuses and returns to the factory for late-night sample stitching. Later, Sarah tells Uncle Stephen about her postpartum psychosis (which I'd forgotten about) and Carla’s psychosis following the factory collapse. Stephen seems intrigued by the latter of confessions.

Elsewhere tonight - Roy’s obsession with his mobile phone leads him to let down Evelyn with the charity shop volunteering, and he’s late valuing a model train set - leaving it to be sold at a bargain price. Bernie’s unexpected (and definitely not unbelievable) golfing talent story continues tonight, and she’s got a trial at the club. Dev gifting her Aadi’s old clubs fails to ignite her lucky streak. Bernie seemingly fails the trial but we later learn she deliberately threw it so she could spend more time with Dev.

Coronation Street Episode Review Friday 3 February 2023

Welcome to what I think was a little bit of a mixed bag episode.  I cannot remember if we knew that Tyler Sam was being bullied at school but having taken some boxing lessons from Damon, plus being instructed on the power of threats, the young lad decides to threaten his oppressor with a telescope thumping.  Sam is sent home and explains events - with Damon getting the blame.

Meanwhile Damon is masterminding the next drug delivery for Monday lunchtime and Nick is getting ever more rattled.  To the point where Leanne demands answers and Nick (to my surprise) actually tells her what is going on.  It takes Leanne a while to get her head around the money not coming from Sam's inheritance.

Daisy and her stalker are not getting on well - so Daniel seeing him on deliveries, delivers a piece of his mind.  Justin talks him down and over a brew they exchange some back story - apparently Justin's mother is in a hospice suffering from cancer - a story designed to gain Daniel's sympathy. Daniel believes Justin agrees not to see Daisy again.  Which lasts just long enough for Justin to walk around to the back yard of the Rovers and he uses the knowledge to tell Daisy that he knows why she cannot hurt Daniel and that he is prepared to wait until they can be together.  Daisy recounts her encounter to Daniel, explaining that Justin knew which buttons to press having researched their family histories.  They agree to report him to the police and we have a sit down with Craig who seems not to have made it out of uniform yet. The approved solution is a log of all future interactions to prove that Justin is a threat, to enable the CPS to prosecute.  Subsequently Daniel and Daisy agree to continue as normal - but it looks like it will be strenuous.

Eileen returns and Mary is trying to bring order out of chaos although the toilet might not be fit for use at present. Sadly Eileen is early and perfection has not been achieved.  Breakfast at Roy's Rolls enables Eileen to distribute presents and for us to see Alex hard at work.  Eileen has brought Muay Thai training gloves and handguards for Todd - a present soon allegedly confined to the bin - but once resurrected, an impromptu session leads George hitting Todd who suffers a broken tooth. The only dentist with space is of course Laurence. Todd does not trust Laurence and initially refuses but the family talk him into it.  It is fixed without charge.  Todd almost admits that perhaps Laurence is suitable for Sean.

Relations between the Dobbs and the Sutherlands are still at a low ebb and in an effort to put things right Kirk and Beth are invited for a brew (and pink wafers - Kirk's favourite) this evening and a proper talk about recent events.  Beth looks unaccountably shifty at various times and seems particularly discomfited when Hope arrives and objects to her presence in the house.  Hope storms out and Beth follows her - to our surprise to apologise for smacking Hope - for once the girl was telling the truth.  Beth also hands over some cash.  Beth thinks it is all over, Hope doesn't and calls Beth a cow.

In the absence of Dave cancelling his golf date Devendra decides to take Bernie for a round as there is an important competition shortly.  Inevitably she plays him off the course and is soon taking calls from Gloria Gullon, the Ladies' Captain, asking her to join some trials next week.

Rita wanders into the Bistro and asks if that wonderful Danny Boy could be contacted and asked for his recipe for sticky toffee pudding.  And we get to learn more about Danny than we ever knew whilst he was on the show.  Leanne agrees to text him.  Apparently he was a lovely lad according to our Reet!

Leanne has summoned Damon to the Bistro to sort it out.  She proves that there is a power in threats as she will summon the police if Damon does not back off.  Leanne tells Damon about Oliver and she is not frightened of anyone.  Despite everything Damon tells them the drop will happen on Monday - but that is the end of it, as they are simply too much hassle.  Leanne has a bigger problem than trusting Damon to go away - can she ever trust Nick again?

Coronation Street Episode Review, Wednesday 4th January, 8pm

Happy New Year to all Coronation Street Fans!

This is my first episode review of 2023 and the fast-paced, issue-based, high-intensity of Weatherfield drama continues in earnest.

Wednesday night's episode began with the Victoria Street Christmas Market reemerging as the Peace Market. In this early morning episode opener, Alya and Maria are out and ready to get the market going. Alya clocks the speed daal van and thinks she sees someone in it. She doesn't, but viewers see Lauren’s Dad steal the van. Max then meets with the gang, who subtly hint at a peace festival protest, telling him they nicked speed daals van and ditched it in the canal. Reece warns Max that he and Lauren must stay out of the way of the festival. Later, Speed Daal's van reappears on the street - viewers see a homemade explosive device attached to its ignition!! With his conscience pricked, Max tells Lauren about the beating, Spider's undercover work, and the market protest plan (thank you, Max, I missed the Monday episode)

Realising the gang's plan to blow up the van/market, Max races to inform Yaz and Alya about the unnoticed disappearing/reappearing van, but of course, they have no interest in heeding his warning. Checking the van, however, Alya spots the improvised explosive, and with Lauren having already called the police, our heroine decides to drive away with a bomb on board! Reece returns looking for Lauren but is quickly bundled into a car by Griff and his cronies and driven away.

With the clock ticking, Alya has to dispose of the van before the bomb goes off, and on a phone call with a panic-stricken Yasmeen, she resolves to head to a canal!

Meanwhile, Spider is still in the hospital following the attack, but Teddy has recovered and is released. With Jenny offering Teddy some convalescing in the Rovers, Stephen is panicking and stirs things up, as he always does. I despised! this character to start with, but the Hillman / Phelan undertone has been a masterstroke in Corrie's plotting. Teddy doesn't remember anything, and still thinks he met Leo in Canada, so Stephen's murderous manipulation continues. Later, Spider wakes up, explains the grooming premise to Toyah, and defends Max's predicament.

On the street, news of the bomb spreads, and the Victoria Street peace market begin evacuation. Max and Lauren race to David to explain, with Max finally realising what he got himself into, and Alyla arrives on a disused wasteland, where the bomb explodes the van. Alya has been thrown from the vehicle, unconscious on the floor, but manages to stumble home, with the police finding her on Balaclava Terrace. The police then head next door and arrest Max.

Elsewhere - Damon tells Jacob to quit the Underworld job to work at the Bistro full-time, which he does, telling Nick to double-pay his son, and it's clear that Damon is obviously planning something when he wants a mysterious package delivered. Gemma and Bernie are upset at Bessie Street's reluctance to take on BSL usage, so they head over to shout it out. The snooty school teacher ignores their pleas, so Bernie, Gemma (and Michael Bailey, randomly) decide to do a sit-in protest. With one Corrie cause celebre slowly nearing completion, they thought it was time for another. As someone who wears hearing aids, I get what this is about, so I am all for it.

Elsewhere, I loved Roy's astonishment at the banality of mobile phones, memes, passwords, and emojis misuse. Brian needs to reintroduce those peace cakes to Mary. I’d love to see a modern retelling of the famous 2003 scene (episode 5581) where the old-guard patrons got stoned at Roy's Rolls. Peter’s barter storyline is also enjoyable.
