Daisy’s Dumped! Corrie Blog:Charlotte Jordan Interview

At the end of last Friday’s episode, we saw Daisy’s devastation as Daniel ended their relationship and Ryan reconciled with Chrystal. What now for the Rovers barmaid? Corrie blog had a chat with Charlotte Jordan who told us all about Daisy’s dark Christmas and her Rovers (New Year) resolutions!

How is Daisy taking the break-up?

In Daisy's fashion, she masks her true feelings with a face full of makeup and witty remarks - she is heartbroken. Fresh out of the break-up with Daniel, I think she’s hoping for reconciliation. They’ve always had such a fiery relationship. She’s left hoping and praying once he’s had a bit of time to take the initial sting away, she can convince him to make another go of it.

After losing both Daniel and Ryan, where is Daisy’s head?

She’s having to regroup and refocus. These men at one time or another have been her sole focus for the last two-three years on the street. They (Corrie writers) are using the break-up to bring the dark side of her character back out! She’s going to lean into her morally corrupt tendencies. She feels she has nothing left to lose, so for lack of a better statement: The Bitch is Back.

Daisy breaks into the Platts!

How does Daisy feel about Ryan moving to Glasgow?

Daisy genuinely wants what’s best for Ryan. She feels so indebted to him, that she’s confused about her gratitude for romantic feelings towards him. I hope people haven’t forgotten that Daisy is also traumatised from the Justin saga and hasn’t processed much of it herself as she’s focused all her energy on Ryan’s recovery. On-screen, we haven’t touched on her own. Hopefully, people remember she isn’t the straight-up bad guy in this love triangle, it’s more complex and layered than that.

Do you think Daisy will see Bethany as a threat - given her and Daniel’s history?

Oh god, absolutely! - she’s beautiful, she’s been told how successful Bethany is living it up in London - Daisy is a naturally jealous, territorial person. Bethany had that connection with Daniel when he was at his most vulnerable which will instantly put Daisy on high alert and I have to say it’s a relationship I’m looking forward to playing around with.

Bethany Platt Returns! - Friend or Foe For Daisy?

Daisy seems to like a challenge when it comes to relationships - firstly with Ryan and Alya then the challenge with Daniel initially - does Bethany being back give Daisy that challenge and push to win Daniel back?

Mmm, I wouldn’t necessarily refer to Daniel as a prize to be won - he’s also made some pretty manipulative moves which I think scream “red flag”. I can’t decide whether they need to go their separate ways for good or whether this has proved they’re more similar than we thought, maybe they’re made for each other! If Daisy sees Daniel happy with someone else it will crush her, especially if he moves on fast. But it will also force her to take accountability for what she’s done to their relationship. I think because deep down, she knows how royally she mucked it up, after the initial red mist fades she may want him to be happy but, we can live in the hope that he does eventually find his way back to her!

What would you like to see from Daisy in the coming months?

I’d like her to focus on the Rovers and focus on becoming a successful, mini, secret landlady. I’d also like her to turn the relationship with Bethany on its head. They’ve got a fair amount in common. I think there’s room for a solid friendship to blossom and then selfishly, I’d get some scenes with more of the Platts. I’d like that. Start throwing Daisy into different social circles on the show. I’ve been asking them to make Daisy and Todd pals for yonks! Me, desperately trying to get Daisy some friends!

Corrie Blog Interviews Charlotte Jordan - Justin’s Acid Attack On Daisy’s Wedding Day!

Since Daisy's cancer scare, the Instagram influencing, Rovers barmaid, and stepdaughter of Jenny Bradley has had quite the journey. The on/off relationship with Daniel has slipped to the sidelines as her social media stalker Justin, who she met in the hospital, has taken over her life. From merely following her online, to the persistent messaging, to following her onto Coronation Street itself, inside N0.1, and now the pub, Daisy's wedding build-up has very much become an issue-based story; social media influencing, poor policing, incel-type male misogyny, stalking, and now... an acid attack!!!

We joined the ITV Corrie press team on Zoom to chat with actor Charlotte Jordan who plays Daisy Midgeley, to learn more about Justin's acid attack on Daisy!

Hi Charlotte, Thanks for chatting with us! Can you tell how Daisy feels, when she seems to be doing all she can to stop Justin, yet nothing seems to be working?

She’s doing all the things she’s been told to do and trying to stop him from making her life miserable, but the law isn't on her side. I'm glad this storyline has shown that, and hopefully some laws can be changed, as it's horrendous for women that go through this.

It does appear that Justin has the upper hand in all of this! How's it affecting her as the wedding draws nearer?

The wedding is the light at the end of the tunnel for her, the one thing keeping her going, but it's been tough for her and Daniel. She was scared, tried hiding away, and then went against Justin. She's felt a myriad of emotions, but overall she just tried to stay positive

In those early days, when Justin was sending her flowers and chocolate, did Daisy ever feel that it would become so extreme and dangerous?

No, not at all. I think everyone thought this was just a harmless crush, and those kinds of words were used. She's used to male attention but I don't think she would have understood how possessed he'd become.

Just before the acid attack, we see Daisy winning her battle against her stalker. After goading Justin, he attacks her in Victoria Gardens and gets arrested. How does she feel when he’s locked up?

She tries to take things into her own hands, and take control of the situation. It's probably not the smartest thing to do, but that's the kind of person she is, to fight her corner when she feels like her back is against the wall. She plans to get him arrested and it works. Even though it was scary and a stupid thing to do, she feels like the ends justified the means; it was worth it to try and get control back. Daisy feels let down when Justin is released on bail and has managed to wriggle free. She hopes Justin takes the hint from the judge's words at the hearing and will stay away from the wedding.

What is Daisy’s state of mind on the morning of the wedding? Does she think Justin will stay away from the proceedings?

In the episodes before this, Justin has stayed away so on the morning of the wedding she’s quite optimistic and thinks that he’s finally got the message to stay away. She is feeling very positive, and although she may have some PTSD to deal with, she’s looking forward to marrying Daniel as she loves him very much. The wedding is kind of another message to Justin, to say that she can't control him and that love will win. Ian Kershaw (who wrote the wedding episode) has made this a classic corrie episode in the will they / won't they kind of way with some comedy in there too. It is a lovely way to start the episode, contrasting what happens later on! She starts in a very bridezilla manner, with little things going wrong that she thinks are quite a big deal. Her Mum tells her the Midgeley women are cursed, she’s woken up with red eye, the wedding cake has got the wrong name on it, the wedding car gets stolen, and her dress is ill-fitting. Although you would think these are small things, a lot has gone into planning it and she’s devastated by all of the hard work that has gone into her baby and the influencing things behind it. The wedding dress is surprising and aesthetically pleasing but practical for what’s to come later on

As Daisy is readying to leave the pub and head to her venue, Justin turns up at the Rovers. Can you describe her reaction when she first lays eyes on her stalker? Does she think he will turn nasty?

Yeah, I think that fear will be lurking in the back of her mind since he got released on bail. She did play a bit dirty to get him arrested so she does wonder if he will retaliate in some way. There are so many layers with Justin; she faced a myriad of emotions, and then to see him again after he's been warned away from her - she will be scared.

Justins intend to destroy something so fundamental to her, which is her image and her looks. How does Daisy feel about this?

It's just so evil and heinous. To do something like that with acid is so evil, and take away someone's identity like that, to even think about it, and maybe someone having that intention for you. When it happens, she has to think about how she is going to get through it. How is she going to get to the hospital, how is she going to stop things from getting worse? The deeper mental worry about it all will come a bit later in future episodes.

How do you get into the mindset of filming something so dark?

I have to go the other way and contrast the feelings, to snap in and out of it, and then be happy and talk about other things otherwise, it would be very draining at home. I like to leave those feelings at work, and then listen to happy music, have some snacks, and look after the dog. You've done all the research, all you can to prep, and leave it all on the studio floor and see how it goes

Can you remember your reaction when you were told about the acid attack element of the storyline, and how did you feel about it?

I was shocked when I found out they were taking that route with it. It’s not something you in television, so I was caught by surprise...

Thank you, Charlotte!

On the importance of tackling this storyline Coronation Street Producer Iain MacLeod said: “We were keen to show the long-term reality for people who are subjected to this kind of attack. It is something we might often read about in the papers but perhaps don’t fully understand, in terms of the depth and variety of effects it can have. As well as the medical impacts, we explore the social fallout of having your appearance profoundly changed, both in terms of your own ability to process that and how the wider world reacts to you. The story will at times be heartbreaking but we felt it was an important one to tell.”

Every year thousands of people across the world are subjected to deliberate attacks with acid. The root causes of attacks are often extremely complex, however, a common factor in the vast majority of acid violence cases across the world is gender. Women and girls are overwhelmingly the targets of attacks and men are most commonly the perpetrators.

Coronation Street has worked with The Katie Piper Foundation. and Acid Survivors Trust International ASTI in telling this story. Click the clicks to learn more about their important work.

My POV; Some Corrie fans, and the usual naysayers (who don’t have a TV remote, it seems) will discredit this as being too dark and not like Corrie of old - but I'd disagree. This is about men being bad, women’s rights, misogyny, and coercive control. Although a modern story, the roots of this story lay right at the heart of what Coronation Street is all about - fierce northern women and feckless men.

Keep your eyes peeled for more exclusive cast interviews from this incredible storyline over the next week.

Charlotte Jordan interview: Daisy reaches breaking point in stalking story

Over the last few weeks, stalker Justin has been pushing Daisy to breaking point - sending her flowers, bombarding her with messages, turning up at the wedding fair and even getting a job on the street where Daisy lives.

The Coronation Street Blog and other media were invited to a virtual press event with Charlotte Jordan to discuss how Justin's stalking is taking a toll on Daisy's wellbeing, as well as hinting at how far Justin could go.

"[Daisy] is full steam ahead on planning her wedding, which means full steam ahead on the influencing front," says Charlotte. "Her wedding is her baby. She's obviously putting all her energy into planning this spectacle of a wedding. They are in a really good place. The wedding for her, it's a light at the end of the tunnel."

With Justin's harassment confined to her phone, Daisy believed she could handle it. But when he begins inserting himself into her personal life, Daisy fears this problem is becoming more sinister.

"Justin is harassing her. He is cyber harassing her, and then as soon as it steps over into the wedding fair, that sort of is when Daisy clocks that this guy isn't going to go away. She is out of her depth, really. She doesn't know how to deal with it.

"That episode, when [Justin] starts saying, 'I'm your fiance, and we're going to get married,' that's when it clicks for her that this guy is totally delusional. This is not just like a fan or someone who fancies her from online.

"I've done some research, and we now know that he's what's known as an intimacy seeking stalker," Charlotte explained. "He fully believes that they're in a relationship, and he fully believes that they're in love. She's just really taken aback by it because she doesn't know how he could possibly think that. But he is not a reasonable person. So this is when she starts to get extremely scared."

Throughout recent weeks, we have seen Daisy's confidence being chipped away, and Charlotte told us about the impact that this stress is having on Daisy's wellbeing.

"Daisy is a feisty, confident character. She's got a gob on her, so she's not afraid to tell people to do one if she feels she needs to, but what you see is this guy just totally take her power from her. You can't control how other people behave, and you can't control how other people interpret things, so she feels totally powerless.

"And then you will slowly see Justin eradicate and decimate all the things that make her Daisy, which is just really sad. Luckily, she has people around her that love her and are going to support her through it, but no-one can really understand what she is going through. He is going to slowly but surely destroy everything that makes her her, really."

As well affecting her own wellbeing, the situation also begins to affect Daisy's relationship with Daniel.

"When you are going through a problem, and you feel totally powerless, and you can't say what you want to the person causing you this grief because it's not getting through, she will start taking it out on Daniel because that is the only thing she can do - the people around you get the brunt of it.

"As much as he is supporting her, tensions get really high, and she starts to snap, and she starts to get really fragile, and unfortunately, he is the one that has got to learn how to deal with that."

As this nightmare unfolds, the people closest to Daisy suggest that she takes a break from social media - something that Charlotte feels strongly Daisy should not have to do.

She said: "Victim-blaming mentality is so dangerous and so damaging. We've got this whole episodic at the minute where violent crimes against women, for some reason, it's the woman's responsibility to stop everything, and the onus is always on the woman to change her behaviour and change the things she's doing, and that is just so, so wrong.

"The responsibility should not be on the woman to not post a picture of herself where she feels cute, it should be in educating men on what a healthy relationship is and what consent is."

After weeks of harassment, Daisy finally decides to tell the police what's been going on.

"It takes her a while to go to the police, and actually, because women are taught, 'It's flattering, he's just being nice, he only sent you some flowers.' When you have these incidents separately, they may not seem like a massive deal. But when you connect them all and see how long it's been going on for, that is when it is a pattern of behaviour, and that is when it is dangerous. That is when you do need to go and tell the authorities because harassment is illegal.

"It's Daniel that sort of confirms or validates her fears, I suppose, and makes her feel like it's OK to go to the police and that she should get some help because she shouldn't have to put up with this.

"She is always on edge. She is looking over her shoulder constantly. She never knows where he's going to appear because he is totally delusional and believes they're in this loving relationship, and that Daniel is somehow an obstacle for them. She doesn't know how far that delusion is going to go, and she doesn't know how dangerous that will then make him in the long run. It's just a really scary situation for her to be in."

In upcoming episodes, we see Daisy's stress levels increase significantly as she desperately tries to maintain her normal life.

"She's got Daniel and Christina going, 'Maybe come off social media.' She's been fighting it because she knows that's not fair. She has been really trying to keep a hold of her identity and the things she wants, but this is where she finally relents.

"Daniel takes over her social media, so she doesn't have to see these constant messages. And then Daniel does something which isn't quite right, and it sort of sets her off, and it makes her upset because she has been working so hard to give them this wonderful wedding, and Daniel sort of mucks up her social media.

"That sends her over the edge. Her nerves are shredded because of Justin, Daniel upsets her social media which also just sends her into this kind of chaotic spin. She feels like no-one is understanding her, the police aren't helping her, so her levels are already right up there.

"She storms off to get some air, and then she sees Justin with this bouquet of flowers which is very triggering to her because that is how this whole thing began. She just sees red because she feels so isolated, and she just thinks, 'Well, I'll just take this into my own hands and actually tell this guy to sod off for good,' and it escalates very quickly."

Seeing Justin with the flowers is the final straw for Daisy, and seeing red, she punches him.

"She's not a violent person. Daisy is cutting with her words, she's not cutting physically. It's not her just lashing out - it's self-defence. Me and Andrew [Still] were very particular on this. This is the first time that Justin has touched Daisy, and that is crossing yet another line for her. So even though she feels powerless, she can control who touches her in-person, so she sees red, and she just lunges for him because that is the only thing she feels she has got any shred of control over."

Later on, PC Jess approaches Daisy and invites her to the station because Justin has accused her of assault, leaving Daisy shocked.

"This is sort of the main thing that makes her feel even more isolated and even more alone because she has been the police, I think, two or three times by now. This is the first time Justin has called them about her and suddenly, jump into action, even though they know the history, and they know what's been going on. She feels totally isolated and helpless.

"I think it was really important to do this storyline. It's very clever to do it with a character like Daisy because she is a divisive character - you either love her or hate her. And all the things that make her Daisy - she's extra, she's flamboyant, she's camp, she's big, and you will slowly see that she starts to crumble and get smaller and smaller. I don't think she will ever be the same again."

Charlotte Jordan Interview: Don't Mess with Daisy.

Charlotte Jordan’s feisty character Daisy Midgeley has split fans’ opinion since her arrival in late 2020. The catty, sarcastic and often mischievous step-daughter of Jenny has though added some much needed light relief in the Rovers following the elder’s love life woes and the death of ex-hubby Johnny Connor. Jenny’s usually great for those comedy moments we all love in Corrie but with the addition of a new family member the bickering back and forth has added an extra bit of camp to the iconic boozer. Now Daisy’s getting some proper screen time, how will the character develop?

The blog chatted with actor Charlotte and discussed some upcoming storylines that will lead us into the spring. We’ve seen Daisy reconnect, via a bit of saucy roleplay, with Daniel Barlow. And even though he’s revealed he pushed young Max down the stairs, she’s not yet been put off.

But now a character from Daniel’s past is set to return to the Street and Daisy is not happy…
I think it took her by surprise. You know that he has this dark streak that she was not aware of. But, you know, even if they are apart for a while, they can't last for long. So I think it's a THING.

Perhaps opposites attract?
I think they'll bring out different things in each other. And, you know, they're going to surprise each other. And so that's it's going to take is going to keep him on his toes. And I think he'll keep her in check. And I think there will be a good path.

But…Nicky (Daniel’s sex-worker ex) is back…
She doesn't even know that she exists.

But it’s immediately a red flag. When she’s asking about her boyfriend who she's just got back on a stable footing with, Daisy being Daisy sees as a threat and tries to get rid of her!

So Daisy’s not happy then?
She's a very impulsive character. She's very reactive. So, you know, she'll hear something from someone beautiful, like Nicky, and just impulsively go, nah. No, you can't have him go away, bye! Daisy being Daisy she’ll say something to get rid of her.

And what about Nicky’s past?
I’d like to think she would try to be understanding and sympathetic, but being so insecure, I think she'll just see her as a threat. She ends up making everything about her. So I don't think she'll react as maturely as she could.

She’s driven by insecurity?
Bloody Daniel is not being honest with her. He's not being upfront. He's not being truthful. And for someone who does go on about morality and all of that, he's in a bit of a hypocrite, in my opinion.

What lengths do you think that Daisy would go to keep her man?
She does have a ruthless streak. And I'd like to say because they've been so on an off. For them to just be getting back on an even field and even footing, I think she's going to try and protect that. And being Daisy, she won't go about it in the right way. But it does come from a place of fear and a place of wanting to be with him and just sort of wanting to protect what they have.

Are you looking forward Daisy and Nicky locking horns?
Yes, definitely. That's what Corrie's known for, isn't it really, strong women showdowns. And so hopefully we can scrap these restrictions and actually get it done 'old school style'. It would be lovely.

Is Nicky even a match for Daisy if it gets to that?
She's certainly not going to be a character that just sort of rolls over and takes it. She’ll call her out. She’s not going to just sort of wither away and say, excuse me.

Could she use Daniel’s secret against him if it all goes wrong?
She does have a somewhat spiteful nature when pushed to it. I imagine if things went really catastrophically wrong and she was really hurt then yeah, I wouldn't put it past her. It wouldn't surprise me if that if that did come about. If she ever got really, really heartbroken by him.

Could Daisy and Daniel become the new Ken and Deirdre?
Those are quite some names to be throwing about! I have no idea! If people get that vibe from them, then that’s amazing…wonderful. Who knows, we will see.

We've seen Daisy do some pretty dark things, is she hiding more darkness?
Yeah, that's something that they've (writers) not touched on yet. Even when I've asked, I actually don't know, I've asked about it because her past is something that's really interesting to me. I would like to know about it because she’s such a contrasting character. I'd like to know why she operates the way that she does. And it wouldn't surprise me if there's been some very dodgy dealings there. Or she's had to do some dodgy things to escape some bad situations. She's got a very unstable childhood. And I thought that if you have one of those, it can sort of go one of two ways on it. So it wouldn't surprise me if she's had some very difficult situations.

Do you enjoy working closely with Sally (Ann Matthews)?
Of course I do. She’s a Queen. Yes. I think that me feeling so comfortable on the street so early on was maybe down to Sal. She was really welcoming. She really took me under her wing. Yeah, I think she's a legend.

And what's it like working with Rob Mallard?
It's just ridiculous because we just bring out a very childish side in each other. And so it's always a laugh on set together, lots of giggles. But, you know, we do also take very seriously and want to do a good job, but mainly it’s giggles!

How have the public reacted to Daisy and Daniel?
Very positive, very nice people have lots of lots of lovely things to say about them. And you know that they're opposites in terms of character. So I think they're entertaining to watch.

And if Daisy was your friend and she came to you for advice, what would you say to her?
“I would say you just need to sit down and have a cup of tea. Just let it sit for maybe 24 hours and see if you still want to take this action. But let's just think about it first.”

A cup of tea does solve a lot of things.
