Coronation Street Episode Review;Wednesday 15th of June 8 pm

Imran is dead, Toyah facing a murder charge, and Abi is to have full custody of Alfie? Out of the three, it is the latter that I find to be the most inconceivable in Coronation Street of 2022. Yes, the kid's dad is dead, and Toyah faces a murder charge, but still, you wouldn't let Abi adopt a kid, surely? Arson, substance abuse, alcoholism, theft, forgery: it's a long, long charge sheet. And not forgetting an aborted abduction of baby Alfie, to add to the long list. Surely, surely (as much as I love Abi) not. Tonight, it would seem so. Tonight, we learn that Abi has reapplied for custody, and although she can only adopt her son, rather than fully, we still seem to be ignoring her criminal past - so that's alright then.

Talking of which, Toyah is introduced to her duty solicitor, who's a bit rough and has a (shock horror) tattoo! The residents discuss the whys and wherefore’s of reintroducing the Susie subplot, and even I have trouble remembering what that was about! Toyah? of questionable character? The factory staff have got short memories! Tattoo aside, Toyah must be glad that Adam (and his crazy hair) arent representing her. She may have driven that car into a brick wall, but surely it's mitigated, and Toyah didn't do it deliberately? At least I think that's what the writers want us to believe?

Legal language is banded around in abundance, as always, and Nick was correct in his assumption! If you live on Coronation Street - you are more than used to that kind of talk. Tattooed she may be, but we still get the duty solicitor explaining Toyah's predicament to Leanne and it's explained rather well. Even yours truly understands by the end of it, which is surely a litmus test for all Corrie viewers. Overall, things do look bad - can Toyah’s innocence win things? If she is innocent? I’m still not convinced, and neither is Leanne, even though she ends up paying for her legal team by the time tonight's episode is over. As I have previously exerted on this blog, I think some hidden crash footage is yet to be seen, which will save Toyah from jail? I'm sure the lovely-looking DS Swain is on it. More of her, please!

Cathy's calamitous cocktail class with Jim Fizz may have been full of comedy for us viewers, but the joke was ultimately on Brian. Cathy was drowning in sorrows upon discovering his Dear John letters to Julie Carp, and his hankering for Cornwall. Using Evelyn as a soundboard, tonight Cathy decides to confront Brian about the letters and confess her cocktail kiss with Jim. Meanwhile, Brian remains distracted by the Kabins magazine offerings, and after having a chat with Jenny, contacts Jim Fizz for a cocktail lesson. Unfortunately, Jim blabs about the stolen kiss with Cathy, and the truth is out. Cathy may have mocked up a headline banner proposing to Brian, but it's a different headline entirely by the end of the episode. It's obvious where this is going, but it's entertaining, all the same.

Meanwhile - Gail struggles to steer Audrey away from post-op recovery boozing but lands a job at The Bistro, so Shona gets sent on the wine run instead. Comatose by the end of tonight’s episode, it does seem that Audrey has a drinking problem? Corrie has done this before with Peter, so Im thinking a) it's been done for the older spectrum, or b) it's been muted a bit for comedy value? I doubt it's the latter so we will see how this pans out.

Elsewhere tonight - Weatherfield County unveil their new kit and Tim’s apoplectic! Roy recites his trainspotting memories, which is, of course, Corrie gold. Fiz and Phill’s wedding is confirmed for the 8th of July, and Fiz’s joy is dashed when it transpires that Mimi can make it after all, and plans to arrive early to cause mayhem, no doubt. Save the date on your kitchen calendar!

Brilliant writing again tonight, and following Monday’s hilarity, I think Friday night should be worth a watch! I am @rybazoxo self-styled cobbles connoisseur & Coronation Street superfan

Coronation Street Episode Review;Wednesday 25th of May 8 pm

Fresh from Hope's psychotic attempts at D.I.Y digging and car wrecking, Phill has a few challenges in front of him tonight, and by the end of it, he's fought Tyrone in concrete, made amends with his frenemy, and proposed to Fiz! Is he as crackers as John Stape, hell-bent on writing this true-crime story, or just genuinely in love? What about Tyrone? He's laid his cards on the table with Fiz just recently, and after flailing around in that concrete, fighting Phill, and then finding the ring, it seems he's disregarded his own feelings for Phill's romantic intentions, instead! Less true crime and more a Mills & Boon I think, but you never know with Corrie, is Phill hiding something else, maybe? Tonight, with Fiz back at Number 9, Tyrone relishes the possibility of getting the family back together, ignoring Evelyn’s caustic caution, and Kevin’s wise words. Fiz informs the factory lot of this split - these classic machinist gossip moments make Underworld's modern interior and lax security a lot more bearable. Unlike Sean, who continues to irritate.

Heading over to Phill’s, Tyrone disregards Kev’s advice and the boys are soon fighting in the wet cement. The wet cement was possibly a metaphor here, and I think it worked. I could have done without the gratuitous semi-nudity and the hosing down, but of course, comedy is all about subjectivity.  The banter between the boys and bloke-ish humour certainly had me laughing, anyway. We know these two will be best mates in the end, and with them reconciling for the sake of Fiz, Phill ends up proposing marriage, which is accepted. Tyrone as best man, perhaps?

Talking of reconciliation - hurray! for Daniel and Daisy who are now back together - but where does that leave Nicky? That tiny cramped corner shop flat must be more of a tardis than Eileen’s! Tonight, Nicky tells Daniel she’s moving out, feigning the chance of the exciting new opportunity, whilst struggling to hide her upset at having her hopes of romance dashed. Daisy’s even had a new hairdo in celebration (yes she's gorgeous, and yes she knows it). With Nicky now out of the way, I guess she’ll now want Paul out of the way as well?

Meanwhile, Abi visits Imran and Toyah with gifts for baby Alfie and takes advantage of Toyah's better nature, by requesting sole access to Alfie for a day out on her own - next Monday. Toyah agrees. Toyah also receives a call from social services asking them to adopt Elsie, due to some sort of incompatibility issue. Ironic, given Toyah and Imran’s fraught circumstances, and highly implausible, but still, this is all geared towards next week's dramatics so we can let it slide. Abi is expectedly upset at their good news which prompts a thoughtful look on Kev's face. Next week is a big one for Coronation Street so this is a harbinger of a plot device sown in, in the middle of a mid-week episode.

Elsewhere tonight - Weatherfield’s jubilee flag committee have been busy ( I’d guess Roy and Mary are behind that). Summer’s exam strife continues, affecting the flow of tonight's drama, and it makes the production and direction go a bit weird for some reason. Faye’s early menopause causes Craig some earache, but her heart-to-heart with Sally added a sweet poignancy to proceedings. N0.1 Coronation Street has loose tiles, which nearly maimed Tracy, opening up a neighbourly feud between Ed and Steve. Loved having Bernie back in action tonight, but Paul does seem a bit superfluous in terms of Summer's plot.

Coronation Street Episode Review;Wednesday 11th of May 8 pm

I’m unsure what Emily Bishop or Ena Sharples would have thought, but calling it a 'naming ceremony' does continue Corrie’s embracement of soap secularism, following on neatly from last week's Eid storyline. With neither of Alfie’s parents being holier than thou, a non-christian celebration is far more suitable, and seven deadly sins always make good storyline fodder. In tonight's episode, the battle between Abi and Imran continues. Imran is as slippery as always, and, after feeding Leanne a line or two, Battersby has the naming ceremony idea. I’m inclined to think this is all part of the solicitors' plan. Is it just me that thinks Imran is equally as evil as Dr Thorne? They all agree that Abi should be present at the naming ceremony, but Abi flatly refuses to attend, telling Imran that he will lose everything when she when eventually wins custody of Alfie. Imran then lies to Toyah about Abi’s non-attendance, and the realisation hits that Imran is all of the seven deadly sins combined. Thinking about it, I'm sure Ena would be happy it's a naming ceremony and not a christening after all.

Equally as dramatic, but requiring a whole different set of emotions, is Summer’s continuing triad of issues. Diabetic, dia-bulimic, and seemingly body dysmorphia, I guess? It’s a litany of issues, and you’ll have to excuse my language here, it's a tricky thing to write about. Having overshared her issues with the potential new beau, Aaron tells Summer that he doesn't want to see her outside of the support group. Laying his cards out on Roy’s table, studious Summer is left bereft, and even Asha fails to lift her spirit. Later, we see Summer facing her bedroom mirror, in contemplation, and she scrawls red lipstick all over it. I think this is a visual metaphor, and we've more to come in this story. P.S Please can we have Billy THE ARCHDEACON being anything other than a sidecar in Summer’s diabetic vehicle?

Kirk’s factory promotion is a comedic injection, and I quite like it, but are they using Kirky as comedy fodder for Jacob’s redemption? He’s been in the show a long time, Kirk, but I sometimes wonder where or if he fits in anywhere these days. By the end of the episode, he’s out of a suit and back packing underworld knickers, whilst Jacob lands a sales job. All I think about when I see these scenes, is wonder what Mike Baldwin would do. I know it's been 20 years, and maybe it’s nostalgia, but I do hanker for the days when it was a rough back-street sweatshop run by no-nonsense mouthy cockney!

Meanwhile, Peter visits the Bistro and tells Leanne all about what’s happened, Dr. Thorne propositions Carla and then calls for a truce with Peter. I’d guess his posh white flag waving has some sort of dubiously sinister connotations behind it? The men reach an amicable agreement of sorts, but not before Peter has seen Carla’s text message, and Doctor Thorne takes early retirement, which Peter discovers whilst visiting the hospital to withdraw his complaint. Later on, and back at the bistro, Dr Thorne has arranged an impromptu retirement party, just as Carla has taken Peter out for a dinner. We then discover that Dr Thorne has only retired from the NHS, and has instead been offered a new posh job in America! Peter is fuming and promises repercussions. Is this going to be a Corrie class war?

Elsewhere tonight; Fiz has settled into her new posh house, and seems too busy to talk to Tyrone, with Phill coming onto Coronation Street to pick up the girls. George confirms his sleep apnea diagnosis. Evelyn reveals that she uses her age as an excuse to unleash rude words. I know I'm only 40, but that's also my excuse!

Coronation Street Episode Review;Wednesday 30th of March 8 pm

Can you imagine trying to defend Abi in court? The sheer gall required to persuade them that she's a fit mother and definitely not an ex-junkie, jailbird, borderline alcoholic, cokehead, pyromaniac, car thief, who disposed of two kids, lost a third, and given birth whilst under the influence! Oh yeah, and she abandoned the newborn as well. No judge in the real world would let her access that baby, not a chance mate. So what about soapland? Tonight, Abi faces the court hearing, and Imran realises what he is up against - not only in court - but as the baby's secret father. Toyah turning up at court makes the slippery slimeball solicitor squirm further. Inside the hearing, all of Abi’s dirty laundry is aired, Weatherfield Social services play a blinder, Imran is clearly out of his depth, and an interim care order is placed on the child.

Abi’s emotional upset is visible, as is Imran's, and Toyah soon becomes suspicious. Imran worms a way around it and lets Toyah tell Abi that he can't deal with the case anymore. Abi retaliates and makes sure that Imran can’t see Alfie anymore.

Facing the truth, Imran decides that he needs to be on the birth certificate, and he arranges another solicitor to fight Abi’s cause. I'm sorry, but Imran is such a slimeball! We also get a scene of Kevin and Abi tonight, reminding us that Kev, just like Toyah, is unaware of what the truth is here, and both of them deserve better! In light of recent cast news, I’m interested to see how this story unfolds, once the inevitable truth comes out. Could we see Kev and Toyah together in future, perhaps?

Another one I’m interested in is Laura admitting fake guilt for killing Rick. Tonight, Laura faces a plea hearing, and Gary’s guilty conscience is at its peak. Gary tries to convince Kelly to make her peace, Sarah overhears, and of course, Gary’s ex knows the truth about Rick’s murder. Gary then visit’s Laura in hospital, and makes a final plea of his own. Laura cries her heart out, and for the life of me, I can't quite fathom why she’s covering for Gary? Also, I know mention this every week, but where is the cancer awareness? If you've been affected public service broadcast info is missing. Why? Anyway, Kelly has no interest in Laura’s plight, Sarah lambasts Gary for his murderous lies, and he tells Maria that it’s time the truth came out. Where is this going to go? I am enjoying this storyline, I’m just sad that Laura’s demise is incoming. I guess we get to keep Kelly though. I'm a bit old for the teen stories, but that young lady is a superb actress!

I’d forgotten all about Summer. The recent Corrie teen strand has focused on Amy Barlow’s flighty romance, but now that Jacob is out of the bag, I guess it’s time to re-focus on Corrie’s resident brainbox (and possible, bulimic?) diabetic student. Tonight, Billy (Weatherfield’s archdeacon, remember him?) struggles to reign in her fervent study regime, and the mock exams are causing the teen some stress. Even Todd is showing concern, and I’d also forgotten about him too. Busy with death, I imagine, but I am glad to see these three back on screen. It’s been a while. Todd and Billy both express concern for their daughter and it’s nice to see. A rare and unique blended Corrie family. Untraditional and modern. More from these guys, please, Corrie!

Elsewhere in this hour - Craig rejoins the police. hurray(!) Sally and Tim's cringe sex-life storyline continues, and Emma takes things further with Jon. Bye!
