Coronation Street summer spoilers: Billy and Todd
Coronation Street producer Kate Oates has teased some sizzling summer spoilers for Coronation Street. One of the major storylines we'll see unfold over the coming months will be that between Billy and Todd.
As we know, Billy's ex-fella Drew is dying and has asked Billy to look after his daughter - and Billy's god-daughter - Summer.
After Drew dies, Summer will indeed be coming to live with Billy and Todd. The actress who will play Summer has already been cast, Kate Oates confirmed yesterday at the Corrie press day and the focus of the storyline will be on Billy and Todd's parenting skills.
But it's not as straightforward as that, of course, being soap! Drew's parents won't be happy about their granddaughter going to live with two gay men and we'll see their nasty prejudice emerge.
Also, Billy's past will be explored and we'll find out he's not quite as angelic as he might seem. What did he do before he became a vicar? We've already met his dark and troubled brother, so what is in Billy's past that could come to the fore, I wonder?

This should be interesting. It was commented, on another post about this storyline, that it was odd that the only person in the world to take Summer was a godfather who doesn't seem to have seen her in many years. Maybe having to fight for her will reawaken Todd's parenting instincts.
I'm confused Drew is gay, so why is it a problem when Summer goes to live with another gay couple?
Billy told Todd that Drew's parents weren't happy when he came out and it caused friction
I hope they write in at least one visit from social services. You can't just move a minor to a new household without official assessments. And what about Summer's feelings?
Billy said at the beginning that he was a party animal and into all sorts before he found God so they've got a wide range to pull from, I would think.
I am looking forward to this storyline. It should be very interesting.
I don't like the idea of Drew's parents objecting only because the two men she'll go to live with are gay. As grandparents, it would be more convincing to have them fight for Summer because they are her kin and want to do good to make up for the conflict with Drew. That kind of battle would have depth, the "we hate you because you are gay" angle has already been done and is incredibly superficial (as most hate is).
Canuktuk - wouldn't it be nice if that storyline really was old hat. Unfortunately we are still surrounded by homophobia. Many people are able to keep a lid on it most of the time, but stressful family occasions like this are when the old prejudices can come erupting out. It isn't really a question of whether a story has been done before, but whether it is still relevant.
i wonder whether summer and amy will interact much, being of a similar age. it would be interesting and add extra depth for this character, to see a friendship or even a rivalry emerge between the two.
I was wondering the same thing but about Max. In the Comings and Goings pic, she looks somewhere between Max and Amy's ages. Both of them could use a friend, Max perhaps more as he doesn't have a cousin his age. Always thought Billy would be a good dad, this should be interesting.
Who's Summer's actress?
