The Sun reports, with nothing more than words from "a Corrie source" that Claire King has been signed up as a permanent character on Coronation Street.
Despite the lack of any official announcement, I do hope the story is true.
I like Erica Holroyd. There, I've said it. And Corrie needs more middle-aged women, once the bedrock of the show, now in short supply. We've got Liz, Eileen, Gail, Sally and Yasmeen and that's about it. Mary is mad, so doesn't really count, Julie is leaving, so Erica staying on in the show is great news to my ears.
If you would like to know what happens to Erica's baby storyline, there's a spoiler in the last paragraph of this blog post.

ummm..can't say that I have been impressed with her appearance to date..her pursuit and "pouncing" on poor ol' Nick was a bit over the top, I must say......I guess time will tell how she fits into the Platt family scene....
Liz needs a friend so I guess she fits the bill.
Yuk!
I was thinking this would be the case when I saw her "support" scenes with Liz and Co yesterday. I like this! And there already is some animosity with Gail, who was just so rude to Erica. Yep, this one is not so pointless. Write their cards right and she'll bring her Ma to live on the street. I'm all for it. Any relation to Allison King? The voice timbre has me wondering:)
At the risk of sounding cynical,it seems if your character is linked to a member of the Platt family,[Callum , Michael and now Erica]you get to stay on the Street,if not then your character is axed.
I was liking the budding relationship between Nick and Carla and I'm disappointed that Carla who is leaving will be replaced by Erica who I don't like at all.
She has no spark. I wish they would bring in working class women of that age though as Im fed up wit all the bistro gang dominating the screens- Micky
Not impressed with her character either, she should be gone.
I don't like her either, so far, but her storyline hasn't been that sympathetic. She came in as a cougar, with no further introduction. Her pregnancy seems opportunistic, devised to break up Nick and Carla. If they're keeping her on, TPTB must have something else in mind for the character. Is there any direction we want to see Erica go?
I don't see Nick and Erica being a permanent item. They just don't seem right together. She might end up becoming very needy and clinging to Nick as her last chance of love. He would run a mile, perhaps straight back to Leanne.
I like the idea of Liz having a friend, especially in the wake of her dear friend's sudden death. However, starting Erika off so full-on with Nick and then bringing her back with this baby drama is just too much. Watch, she'll end up with Ken at this rate.
I hated her arrival but liked the toned down good friend we saw this week. The contrived pregnancy story is almost over. She and Liz have history, even tho it was off screen, and she seems to have also made a friend in Eileen. So far, I think she'll fit in well. She just needs something besides being her moms carer and Nicks plaything.
Maybe if they end this pregnancy story quickly and tone down the "cougar" aspect of her character, the friendship with Liz could work. But I agree that a middle-aged working class woman would be better.
Permanent cast member? For what? I am not a fan of her character at all. Why do they have to make these middle aged women so desperate and skanky? So not looking forward to her being on the street.
At this point, I'm not all that impressed with her. I agree with one of the commenters above, she could be ok if they tone her down just a bit. If Carla's on her way out, what's the betting she might be running the factory by the end of the year?
She's suffered from the same problem Andrea did: we're meant to find her hilarious right from the first second, so she's kind of annoying. However, I think Claire King is a much better actress, and I'm happy to see a performer joining the cast who isn't a former post star.
I am surprised and disappointed about the loss of the baby. In recent months post brain injury Nick has found a new niche effectively playing the fatherly figure all over the street. I was looking forward to him having a child of his own. Being a Dad could have been rewarding to the character and to the viewers.
I don't understand the point of the baby story. For what? Not to bring her and Nick closer together. Not carrying full term to show a menopausal woman having a baby. What have I missed here?
Anyway, what does that mean: 'permanent cast member'? Existing actors are getting six months contracts but it can't be accurate that a new actor is made permanent like Barbara Knox and Bill Roache. There's been some misreporting here, surely. I realise it's a tricky balance to bring in a new character who makes an impression without going OTT but they often fail. Gloria was unremittingly rude with no humour, Andrea was unbearably exuberant, a whole gang of young women have been 'feisty'. If we are to like Erica, perhaps we should see more of her with her mother. Not attempting to be Deirdre and Blanche, but maybe on the lines of Maureen and Maud. Please don't let Erica work in the Bistro with yet more gurning from a tipsy Gail.
If her mother is to appear too it's bound to be an ex-other-soaper. Barbra Windsor must be waiting for the phone to ring.
If you think about it, the fire + impending cast departures open up several new job opportunities on the Street. I was never clear what Kal did at the gym, but someone will have to replace him. Then there's Tony, persona non grata at the pub, so Liz will need a new backstop (Erica perhaps?) What happens to the balance of power at Barlow's Buys now that Tracy and Tony are on the outs? Plus, there are Lloyd and Andrea leaving StreetCars, which leaves Steve and Eileen alone with a soon-to-be dysfunctional Les Dennis - and Samia Ghadie, about to take a leave of absence, vacates a position at the Salon, which, unless Kylie learns to cut hair, will need filling. And who will take over Maddie's role at the Garage? It promises to be a musical chair moment!
Permanent just means a 6 or 9 month contract. No actor is there for ever - not even Knox or Roache.
I thought the pregnancy story line was too far fetched so I'm glad to hear it's almost over. I agree that there needs to be more long term middle aged characters on the show, but I really can't decide if her staying is good news or not. Guess we'll see what the writers come up with -- hopefully she's not crammed down our throats like St Ella was.
I wish they would bring in more "manly" men.
