The good people at The TV Times ensure that a copy of their fine magazine drops onto my doormat every week, and it's always a good read. This week there's an interview with Debbie Rush, who plays Anna Windass on Coronation Street, and she talks about playing Anna on Corrie and the Phelan storyline.
Debbie says she's always wanted to be an actress but it wasn't until she was 39 (she's 47 now) that she landed her first professional acting job in Hollyoaks: In the City.
Some well-known stars auditioned for the role of Anna, the TV Times says, but it doesn't reveal who they were. It does say that the character of Anna was almost named Donna, then Sharon before the writers settled on Anna.
Debbie talks about being involved in Hayley's pancreatic cancer storyline which she said brought back some painful memories as her dad passed away from the same disease.
Speaking about the current storyline with Owen and Pat Phelan, Debbie says "It gets really bad, to the point where (Anna and the family) they can barely afford a pint of milk and we see Anna in true matriarchal style trying to hold the family together."
And she adds: "I do hope we stay down in the doldrums - I'm loving it"

I'm glad to see this down-turn too. It means the writers have their fingers on the pulse of a good portion of it's viewers.
It seems they have ignored, glossed over or barely touched on true financial hardship in their story lines for a long time.
That just isn't realistic at all.
Glad to see the old Anna coming back. She was getting way too "Donna Reed" for my liking. Ballsy women are the backbone of this show IMO.
Debbie Rush is an excellent actress...one whom I HOPE we will see for many years to come, on the street!
