News in over the weekend is that Coronation Street is going to be the first TV show to include product placement, or in other words, accept cash in exchange for even more advertising within the programme.
The product placement is going to be for Nationwide Bank when a cash machine turns up inside Dev's shop to replace the unbranded cash machine that's already there, and an advertising banner for the bank will appear outside of the shop too.
The deal, thought to be for an initial period of four months, marks the first product placement in a UK primetime show.

I don't mind if it's not a constant thing, like everywhere you look someone is wearing a logo or using a recognizable brand or even mentioning a brand. that really gets tedious. Seeing Kevin using a branded motor oil or the ATM thing isn't so bad. I guess, being from North America, we're a lot more used to seeing it
I don't mind if it's just around and about. Not focused on, unless somebody asks for something branded in one of the shops or the pub that's fine. Although if they are going to do this they should reduce the amount of adverts.
Does this mean they'll have more money to spend on the show? Could they afford better cast and crew?
We already have the sponsorship item at the beginning and while that seemed strange at first, it has never persuaded me I wanted a bar of chocolate or needed to buy a sofa. So, in moderation, I think it's OK.
I cant say that it bothers me one way or the other if Sally eats Heinz Beans or the cafe serve up Walls sausages, perhaps the extra revenue will mean they can afford better writers, with a bit of humour and wit for a change.
I don't mind a bit of product based realism in the show. I still find it funny when the camera tracks across Dev's shop and all the cans on the shelf have their labels turned away from the front. You won't sell much that way!
The cash machine is subtle, and realistic. Now if they replaced Newton & Ridley beer with Heineken, then I'll start complaining...
