I am SO Loving Sylvia running the cafe with her no nonsense regimen. She orders the customers about. She insists on manners.
And she called Tina a "Strumpet"! Marvellous!!

Yeah..Dont like her one single bit.
Mike
I love her! She's great. :D
And, going by recent spoilers, we'll see her softer side come out in the next few weeks.
I think she's wonderful. Love the acerbic wit in both Waiting For God and now in Corrie. Glad they merge it with a slight soft side from time to time.
Strumpet - now that's a word you dont hear any more and Tina is more a shrew, couldnt really call her a strumpet which means tart, so it was a bit of a silly insult really. I dont particularly like Sylvia, I dont find her brand of rudeness funny. As I have said before they are trying to replicate Blanche and they never will as Maggie Jones was a one off. They should have brought in the old dear that they killed off in Audrey's (Johnny Vegas mum in Benidorm) as she would have been a great character with her own kind of humour, instead of trying to clone Blanche.
Absoloutley love her. My favourite character at the moment.
She's wonderful isn't she? At first it seemed that she had just been introduced to fill the void left by Blanche but recently she has grown on me and I love her scenes now.
She's brilliant. I used to love Stephanie Cole in Waiting for God - she's a great comic actress - and the curmudgeonly Sylvia is a great creation. I can't wait for her to find out Hayley's secret...
I think Sylvie is wonderful. As soon as she appears on screen I find myself eagerly anticipating her next put-down. She's also a great addition to the Cropper household, and gives scope for many more stories featuring Roy and Hayley.
All this talk of her being a Blanche clone, must presumably come from younger viewers. You could just as easily say that Blanche was an Ena clone or a Hilda clone. The fact is that an elderly female character who take the moral highground, but who actually has a heart of gold, has been a staple of the programme since episode one.
I agree she isn't a Blanche clone - that's an insult to Stephanie Cole. She's a proper northern no-nonsense character you find in every street. I love her soft side too - never saw that in Blanche! She's a great, breath-of-fresh-air addition to Corrie and I hope she stays awhile. Looking forward to her finding out Hayley's story - perhaps we'll find out where Roy got his tolerance and understanding from.
Well said John McE.......... I couldn't agree with you more.
Not trying to be mean and bash Blanche, but don't people get tired of the comparison. There where battleaxes before Blanche, such as Ena Sharples and Ivy Tilsley. So I don't see her as another Blanche and don't think she is there to replace her. I enjoy Sylvia and think she is brilliant, one of the best characters in the show.
I agree too, John McE. And you make a good point that Sylvia could mean more stories for Roy and Hayley. I'd like to see more of them.
She needs another character of her own age to exchange insults back and forth with on a regular basis. On her own she's just an old bitch and no one says anything back to her - they just cringe. I get that they're trying to develop her character, but she really is just an old annoying cow right now.
I hope she does start interacting with the other older characters like Rita and Emily. I wonder if they'll tolerate her like they tolerated Blanche? There's another big difference between Sylvia so far, to Blanche. Blanche loved to hear the gossip and would place herself to overhear what she could, Sylvia so far doesn't seem so inclined.
I think she could be the new Annie Walker!
She's fantastic! A wonderful addition to the program. Her performance is nuanced such that you can see elements of Roy in her speech and mannerisms. My fingers are crossed that they will continue to develop the character and then, continue to utilize her in the program rather than tossing her aside like they do so many other characters.
Is it Sylvie or Sylvia? I've seen both written in listings, but the credits go by so quickly now I rarely look at them.
I do so agree with you Nora, if she'd been brought it as the new owner of the Rovers, I would have been delighted, but (a) she would have driven most of the regulars away, and (b) realistically the work load might be too great for an actress of Miss Cole's years.
^ John McE:
her name as listed on the Corrie website is "Sylvia Goodwin".
I so happy they have found a new wonderful character. I miss Blanche and Maude and all the wonderful, strong, yet really cranky, older women that have walked the cobbles. I think the producers should look into cloning!!!
I'm loving Sylvia as well. She's got a tough exterior but deep down she's a softie. As time passes her character will develop and we'll see many more sides of her.
<3 Stephanie Cole!
