Yes, sadly it’s true. After months of speculation, the Stape-inator has been revealed as a departing member of the cast, confirming rumours that a dramatic exit is on the cards. Graeme Hawley, who plays the identity-stealing, schoolgirl-romping, pensioner-suffocating, body- burying, youngster-kidnapping, hammer-time chief, filmed his final scenes today. Scenes have already been filmed which see John threaten to jump from the roof of a hospital, with aptly named baby Hope in tow. The dramatic episodes do culminate in John taking a tip over the edge but the fact that the actor only finalises filming today leads me to suspect that rumours of John surviving and going on the run could in fact be true.
So how do we feel about losing the Street’s king of wacky plotlines? John has grown on me a great deal and, now that I’ve given up on realism and taken the story as it is intended, I’ve been thoroughly gripped and will be sad to see it end. I do fear that writers are missing an opportunity to take it in even more bizarre and entertaining directions but I suppose all good things come to an end and no Corrie villain, unless their name is Tracy Barlow, gets away with their crimes forever.
How do you feel about the storyline? And how do you feel about Coronation Street’s current reliance on dramatic plotlines such as Stape’s ending, Jim’s bank robbery and Sophie’s church roof fall? With news of a further armed robbery on the cards, is it becoming too much?

Yes its far too much, we have become acclimatised now to "sensation" and its become pretty boring with all these "death's door" scenes when we all know quite well that the actor isnt being written out and will made a miraculous recovery within days.
I am sorry to see Stape go and feel they ruined the character when he kidnapped Rosie. I would have liked him to stay and just be a regular character. Hopefully he wont be killed off and the door will be left open. Perhaps Fiz should go too, she seems to be a bit past her sell by now inn Frosty's opinion.
Stape wasn't at all interesting until he kidnapped Rosie and then it got bizarre but a lot less boring even though i always felt he ruined Fiz. I've enjoyed the twists and turns with the Colin part of the story
I think this has been one of the best thought out, acted and developed story lines over the past 12 months. It has been bubbling in the background and is the better for it. It says a lot that for all the unbelievable twists and turns, Graeme Hawley has made Stape such a believable, pathetic figure and puts the acting talents of others to shame.
I hope that TPTB really don't let John Stape disappear completely. We have lost enough real talent from the Street and there are sufficient precedents to allow for him to continue.
I think the worst part is we may lose loveable-but-lost Stape and keep whining, sparkle-less Fiz. Ugh.
I disagree with Frosty. His character came to life when he imprisoned Rosie.
I love John. He's one of my favourite characters. We've never seen a soap character like him before. Harold Shipman meets Frank Spencer. The accident prone mass murderer. I'd happily see him stay on the street forever accidentally electrocuting grannies and dropping pianos on dogs.
Graeme is a fabulous actor too. In my opinion he's been carrying Jennie McAlpine who's skills aren't so honed.
John should have become a "Mr. Chips" sort of character and led a decent life. This is much more useful to watch. We turn on the telly and see wars, bishops indicted for abusing children, violence everywhere. Corrie used to be an escape from all that. It was fun and the best of British soap. I can't wait to see the back of John, Becky, Tracy, Tina, Duckworth, Frank, Maria, Chris. All losers - all completely boring. The story lines are far fetched and not very good. They are trying to mix comedy with the intrepid and violent and not doing a good job of any of it. Eddie, Stape, Graeme, Xin, Liz/Jim could have been such fun to watch. Corrie isn't the same and that's why good actors leave. It's become very seedy.
I'll miss John Stape, I think he's great (the character and the actor) but I preferred him when he was "normal" - why do so many characters have to be so OTT? I don't like the route they have taken him down at all.
I also think that Jennie McAlpine has been shown up for the poor actress she is. If I see that botton lip quiver so unconvincingly many more times, I shall scream!
Started out slow...built up..went over the top...turned ridiculous...crashed and burned.
In my opinion he has had his time. What more could he do? Fiz was such a smashing character who has become a downtrodden wife who no longer has time for the fun things she used to. The street has always had sensationalist stories- the first train came off the viaduct in 1967 remember? But now it seems the problem is they come out of nowhere with no build up and worse still very little gossiping afterwards. Hilda Ogden would have had a field day with Johns antics, Vera too and even Audrey once upon a time but nowadays he will most likely be discovered as a murderer and within a week the street will go back to normal. Wasted opportunities- its the gossip it should all be about!
Stape's "mental illness" has been handled with all the sensitivity of a stampeding buffalo at the Chelsea Flower Show. The "he's radio rental" comments are bad enough, without the programme conveying that mentally ill people are discharged from hospital when they are a danger to themselves and others.
Richard Hillman was the worst thing that ever happened to Corrie. Now it seems the Street is not complete without a serial killer. Next Sylvia will be making meat pies out of chopped up Weatherfield residents. How much better it would have been if Graeme Hawley had less far fetched storylines.
Coronation Street has jumped the shark.
There, someone had to say it.
I love Stape and am really sorry he's going. But I suppose Graeme Hawley has to move on - he's a really good actor and I'd love to see him in something else. Terrible loss to the Street though - he's always seemed to me like a really authentic Corrie character - apart from the killings!!
Ahhhh...John Stape... That to me made Corrie for quite some time. All his acting, and all his stories that he has had to play were brilliant and obviously would not have been succesful, if there hadn't been some innocent (at first) person involved, which just happened to be Fiz. Sometimes Fiz can be dry, sometimes she is really good but the others are just like that, and I don't think they should get rid of her just yet. They should find something really gripping for her character now that John has gone just to keep her alive on our screen. what about her getting on the roof of the prison and insisting she takes off her top until the police realise she is innocent? Well, she has had the nerve to do something like that before, so it must be in her blood!
