Did you know that Eccles is played by 3 different dogs? Or that the first scene in episode one was planned to be a cat jumping out of a dustbin? Or that David Barlow was originally going to be called Enid? I didn't and some people might be tempted to call me a Coronation Street anorak.
These and 47 other facts, some quite well known others slightly more obscure, can be found in an interesting article over at the Daily Mail website.

I love Eccles. He steals every scene he's in.
The fact that stands out for me is this one; 10. For gritty Northern authenticity, characters' names were taken from gravestones in Manchester cemeteries. Is that really true?
Not sure if true but the original names certainly are locally known ones... Barlow, Grimshaw, (Elsie Tanner's maiden name was Grimshaw... always wondered if she could have been Eileen's auntie!) Clegg etc
what a great piece the Mail's list is! Corrie has always been the only soap that hits the spot and I have been an avid watcher from the start, but having just read Tony Warrens' quote that it is a programme about 'the Manchester I know, with dirt under its fingernails.' now I know why! - although Weatherfield for me is forever Salford - Archie Street being a few streets down from my family home.
A friend of mine is a retired Manchester policeman and he says that he was called out to a Manchester cemetery (Philips Park) because someone was suspicious of a man lurking about. He spoke to this chap and his explanation of his spending too much time in the cemetery was that he was collecting names for Coronation St!
Drat! You have just stolen a couple of my 'Did You Know' blurbs the Corrie Fun Pages for this Sunday! Now I am going to have to find some more obscure ones!
