The News of the World today reports that Hilda Ogden's definitely not returning to Coronation Street for its 50th anniversary.
There's a quote in the story from the agent of Jean Alexander, who played Hilda Ogden, saying about Jean: "She's not interested in getting involved again."

To be brutually honest although Hilda is a Corrie icon, who would know her character now if she came back apart from the Websters? The Street has all moved on since she left to work for the doctor. I think she has made the right decision, especially with the embarrassing Bet Lynch return of a few years ago.
The characters who would know her include Ken, Emily, Betty, Rita, Deirdre, Gail, Audrey and Jack. But, apart from Betty maybe, she wasn't close friends with any of the above. I think when she left in 1987 it was apt as all the characters she had been associated with (Stan, Eddie, Annie and Elsie) had left. And her return would ruin her fantastic exit 23 years ago. Maybe Mavis' return would be more plausible because she was good friends with Rita, Emily, Ken, Deirdre and Audrey. And she loathed Norris as well! Plus more characters would remember her as it's only 13 years since she left.
