Preview of tonight's double Coronation Street - Fri 23 Sep

Friday 23rd September
CATHY PUTS ALEX IN HARM’S WAY As they work side by side in the café, Cathy’s snappy with Alex, dwelling on her suspicions about his paternity. When Nigel ignores her messages, furious Cathy leaves Alex in charge of the café and storms out. Roy finds the café in chaos with Alex yelping in agony, having scalded his arm, and takes him to A&E. At Nigel’s house, Cathy bangs on the window, demanding the truth about Alex. As Cathy sits outside his house refusing to budge, Nigel caves and invites her inside. Cathy asks Nigel outright if Alex is his son. Will she get the answer she fears?
ALYA PUTS SHARIF ON THE SPOT Alya tells Sonia she’s outstayed her welcome at No.6. Sonia’s shocked by her bluntness. When Sonia reveals Alya seems to be onto them, Sharif decides it’s time she moved out. Sensing his panic, devious Sonia suggests he buys one of Phelan’s flats for her. Sharif confronts Alya about her outburst. Alya’s unrepentant, telling her granddad that Sonia clearly fancies him. Sharif’s unnerved by how near she is to the truth and agrees to convince Yasmeen that buying a flat is a sound investment for them and Sonia can rent somewhere else while it’s being built.
AIDAN HAS DESIGNS ON EXPANDING Alya and Sinead excitedly outline their bespoke design ideas. Aidan’s impressed but sceptical Johnny demands facts and figures before the venture can proceed.
ELSEWHERE Due to Mary’s new job at the florist’s, Erica takes charge of Aadi and Asha for the day. They’re quick to realise she’s no pushover and the twins vow to get Mary back. Freddie’s disappointed when Audrey turns down his invitation to lunch. Maria advises him not to give up.

Friday 23rd September
CATHY STRUGGLES TO COME TO TERMS WITH THE TRUTH With the truth about Alex’s paternity now out in the open Cathy’s in shock as Nigel explains how he found out he isn’t Alex’s father. He apologises to Cathy for keeping her in the dark. Back at the cafe Roy returns with Alex, and baffled by Cathy’s foul mood, demands to know why she walked out. As Cathy explains all to Roy his calm approach doesn’t help and she blasts Roy for his lack of understanding. As she storms upstairs, Roy feels like a stranger in his own home and glances sadly at a photo of Hayley.
ALYA PUTS TWO AND TWO TOGETHER Yasmeen and Sharif inform Alya of their plan to invest in a flat and rent it to Sonia. Alya sneers at Sonia’s manipulation and Yasmeen’s confused by her rudeness. When Alya refuses to drop her suspicions, Sharif lies and claims he slept with Sonia once, years ago. A stunned Alya works out that Sharif’s buying Sonia’s silence by setting her up in a flat. Sharif admits it but insists he loves Yasmeen and begs Alya not to betray his secret. Will she agree to keep quiet?
AIDAN BASKS IN ALYA’S REFLECTED GLORY Johnny thinks there’s no market for Alya’s vintage designs. Aidan disagrees and goes to a meet a client to drum up interest. Johnny heads off on holiday with Jenny. Revealing their designs impressed the client, Aidan offers Alya and Sinead a £60 bonus each. Sinead’s pleased but Alya furiously accuses Aidan of ripping her off.
ELSEWHERE Maria conspires with Tyrone to persuade Freddie to have one last try at changing Audrey’s mind. At their suggestion, Freddie calls at the salon on his motorbike. Declaring he’s made a mistake, Freddie asks Audrey to join him for a romantic country pub lunch. As Erica’s patience with Aadi and Asha wears thin, Dev confronts Mary with a copy of her contract, pointing out she’s breaking its terms by leaving Erica to cover her duties.

Coronation Street Weds 21st September episode review

Happy birthday, Roy!

Hello! It's just Jordan with this week's Wednesday review.

This particular Wednesday marked the 62nd birthday of Roy, who although often one to dismiss birthdays as trivial, is a little miffed to find that Cathy has apparently forgotten all about it. She dashes out of the café, vaguely telling Roy and Anna she has a few errands to carry out. Anna tells Roy that she is obviously organising a surprise party. Because we're in Soapland here, nothing could ever be that simple. She's not organising a party of any kind and has unfortunately forgotten all about Roy's birthday. Instead, she's off to visit Alex's dad, accompanied by Yasmeen, to try and convince him to give his son a deposit for one of Pat Phelan's non-existent flats. And breathe! So, as Yasmeen and Cathy arrive on yet another dramatic street somewhere in Manchester, Cathy will not be told that maybe this isn't such a good idea. Alex's dad, Nigel, is far less than pleased to see her but Cathy eventually gains five minutes of his time by way of trapping her foot in the door that was almost slammed in her face.

"I don't owe Alex anything"
"You owe Alex the same as what you owe your other two kids"
"You don't know what you're talking about"

The five minutes spent in Nigel's living room are enough to unlock a secret which was supposedly meant to be kept for a lifetime. Cathy tells him that the monthly allowance that Alex receives is hardly enough. She notices the photographs of his daughters littered around the living room and points out that Nigel owes Alex far more than a monthly allowance after abandoning him over two decades ago. This is when Nigel angrily suggests that Cathy has a look to see just exactly where Alex's payments are coming from. Instantly regretting his outburst, he throws Cathy out and sets a ball rolling in her mind, especially when Nigel shouts that he can't say anymore because he's made a promise. Again - this is Soapland, the place where all promises are broken and all secrets are told. Back at the café, Cathy is taken aback to learn of her error. It's okay though, because Alex and Anna have hastily thrown together not-so-surprise suprise party. Roy seems to be nonchalant and forgiving and Cathy dashes upstairs to find out where Alex's allowance is coming from. This revelation takes Cathy even further aback, as she discovers that the allowance payments come from Newhaven, the place where her late husband went on business. The place where he had an affair with Cathy's sister. And that's when the episode ended with a classic Corrie bombshell.

"I think Alex must be the product of an affair"

As of this week, it would seem that Todd and Billy are no more. The Tilly fandom (a lovely term I discovered on Twitter earlier this week) will be breaking their hearts after the pair split in Monday's episode, following Billy's discovery that Todd was the one who complained to the Bishop. Why Todd has suddenly reverted back to his evil self is a mystery to me. Why he was even made to be evil when he returned from London anyway has always been a mystery to me.  Anyway, now Todd is working for Pat and his fake flats and is attempting to flog said fake flats to anyone who passes by.  As the lying goes on, however, guilt starts to seep in. Todd eventually walks away and when confronted by Phelan in the pub later, he seems to be drawn back in.

"Once we've got enough cash, that goes into Vinny's business account.
Then Vinny does a runner. Cue despair and desolation"

Tracy scoffs at Todd as she passes him on the Street and says he will be sorry for leaving her at the flower shop. However, she is getting more and more frustrated as she fails to find somebody to replace Todd at the shop. She's generously paying the living wage, too. That's when she bumps into Mary, who enthusiastically offers her services to Preston's Petals. Tracy reluctantly takes her. 

"I have pretty green fingers myself"
"Oh... right...well somebody that isn't totally irritating-"
"And what I don't know about seasonal blooms isn't worth knowing!"

Elsewhere, Alya has been impressing the boss at work with her knicker designs. Aidan found some of her sketches in her locker and was so impressed that he has offered to have them produced. However, back at home, Alya is beginning to smell a rat called Sonia. She can see that something is going on between her granddad and the woman who is supposed to be a family friend. Little does she know that something has been going on for seven whole years. Something tells me these two storylines are going to collide very soon!

Overall, I enjoyed this episode quite a lot. I was certainly not expecting the somewhat revelation at the end, and the scenes leading up to it were fantastic.  Oh, and a special mention goes to Kate Ford and Patti Clare, who as Tracy and Mary created the highlight of the episode for me. I can't wait to see how this double act pans out! Tracy may well be jailed for murder again...

Todd and Billy back together - Yay or Nay?

It looks like we'll see Todd try to back out of his partnership with Phelan in order to save his relationship with Billy.  You can read all about that here.

This is good news for this Coronation Street fan. I love Todd and Billy together. Billy is good for Todd in all sorts of ways. 

We've had a same-sex wedding in Coronation Street before, when Sophie and Sian made it to the altar, although the marriage didn't take place.  Perhaps it's time for a gay wedding that actually goes ahead this time... and perhaps that couple could be Billy and Todd?

So, what you do say about the possibility of these two getting back together - Yay or Nay?

Will Todd bring down Phelan - or just wind him up?

Who thinks Todd will bring down Phelan? And who thinks Todd will just wind Phelan up even more than he already does?

My own view is that Phelan is such a good baddie, the best one we've had in Coronation Street for a very long time, in fact he's too good a baddie to let go.  Therefore, my guess is that Corrie will want to keep Phelan going for as long as possible.  But, in soap, all baddies must get their comeuppance so there has to be a natural arc to Phelan's storyline which will see him leave one day. In theory, any way...

Next week on Coronation Street, we'll see Todd try to back off from his partnership with Pat and Vinny. He does this to try to save his relationship with Billy, which I believe, is worth fighting for.

Connor McIntyre, who plays Pat Phelan says this about Phelan finding out about Todd wanting to pull out of the scam: "Phelan is extremely anxious for two reasons. First of all, that rocks the whole boat with Eileen. Also, we know there's history between Phelan and Vinny. Phelan knows that Todd pulling out represents real dangers in terms of Vinny just saying, ‘I’m going to kill him.’ Now, for Phelan, that would wreck the whole deck of cards also, so he's very anxious.

"Phelan tries to persuade Todd on two fronts. Firstly, he hits Todd where his soft spot is, which is Eileen and Jason. He says, ‘This is about your mum getting something for herself’ and about Jason’s investment being at stake. Then, of course, he offers to pay for Billy’s charity trip to get Billy on side, so he's hitting him on every front really".
