Luca Toolan interview: Mason makes trouble for Tim

Mason seemed to have turned a corner recently and is on a good and honest path. Do you think he’s really changed from the Mason we were first introduced to?

Yeah, I definitely think Mason has changed. I think you’ve got to remember how much rubbish this troubled lad has been through. Mason has gone to jail, then gone to jail again for something he didn’t actually do, his brothers torment him and now he’s so clearly trying to change his life around. The easier option for Mason would be to give in and join his brothers, but I think it speaks volumes about where his head is at because he’s fighting against it and wants better for himself, which is a really brave thing for him to do.

Do you think the turning point for Mason was Stu’s influence?

Yeah, Stu was a great guy and Mason has a lot of love for him. He was the first person to show him TLC and showed Mason that not every parental figure is horrible. Stu showed Mason a craft, gave him a place to stay, second chances and life lessons so a lot of Mason changing his ways is definitely credited to Stu.

Even though Stu has left, Mason has fallen on his feet with Tim taking him under his wing. What is this like for Mason and what’s it like filming with Sally and Tim?

It’s absolutely mint. Joe and Sally are a force to be reckoned with. Joe is as dry as it comes, Yorkshire lad through and through and just absolutely hilarious to be on set with. Sally is just the loveliest woman in the world who brings so much good energy, so it’s been an absolute pleasure working with them. As for Mason, it’s also been so nice for him. He’s a kid who has had a horrific upbringing and to have people who will actually act like a cohesive parent couple isn’t something that Mason has experienced before. With Stu and Yasmeen, it was great but Yasmeen was always a little bit hasty so it wasn’t that unified love that could feel like parents.

So when Mason apologised to Liam, do you think he really meant it or could he have a hidden agenda?

I think he definitely did mean his apology but part of it was said out of fear and the other part was out of remorse. He’s still trying to come to terms with his guilt, slowly but surely, and I think there still is some denial there for him which isn’t fully allowing him to fully be remorseful but under that hard exterior he does accept that it was wrong what he did to Liam.

You’ve always said you would love to delve into Mason’s background and family life and now Mason has some family members on the street. What’s it been like filming with them?

It’s been mint having two brothers on the street. Working with them has been great, they are two crazy boys who are a lot of fun and they’re both really loving off screen - it’s similar to my friendship with Charlie (Liam Connor) and Liam (Dylan Wilson) off screen, there’s a bond there that allows a certain level of trust where we can really push ourselves and test the limits of the scene.

How scared is Mason of Logan and Matty? Is he in real danger?

He should be running for the hills! Those two are nutters - they are as mental as they can get.

How does Mason feel towards Betsy?

Betsy is a funny one which is something I’ve been trying to figure out myself. One day we’re lovey dovey and the next we’re hating each other which is a roller coaster, but what’s driving the roller coaster is that he really loves her deep down. I don’t think Mason is the sort of guy to give his time and energy to a girl that he has no interest in. He may play it cool and struggle to show that love, but deep down, the love really is there.

Betsy advises Mason to lie and tell his brothers that it was Tim who grassed on him. Do you think Betsy is a bad influence on him?

I don’t think she’s a bad influence on him, I think she just wants to protect him. If Tim takes the blame, although it’s not entirely moral in that sense, that could keep Mason out of harm's way which is ultimately what Betsy wants.

How will Mason feel when he learns about Matty and Logan going after Tim  to ‘teach him a lesson’? Will he feel responsible?

Oh definitely. Similar to Stu, Tim is a person who has taken Mason under his wing and both Yasmeen and Sally had a little bit of resistance to allow him to stay, but Tim has fought for Mason and even snuck him in while Sally is at pilates. Mason isn’t stupid and he’s certainly not taking Tim for granted so he would feel entirely responsible if he was to come to harm.

Mason is one of the suspects of killing Joel due to protecting Betsy. How do you think he will react when Matty and Logan go after her?

I think that could potentially be a turning point for Mason. It’s a step too far, Mason can take all the stick from Matty and Logan, but as soon as they go after someone who is vulnerable, and someone he deeply cares about, then that will push Mason too far and I expect that he will want to fight back.

When Sally and Tim find ‘grass’ sprayed across their front door, does Mason think his chances of staying there are over and will lose everything all over again?

Mason is absolutely petrified. He got kicked out over the brick through the window of Stu and Yasmeen’s house so he’s seen this all before. He understands it though because why would Tim and Sally want to harbour someone who is bringing all of this trouble to their door? His brothers are trying every possible thing  to ruin Mason’s chances of starting a good life, but hopefully it doesn’t come to that.
