So after all that Summer decides she's not going to Oxford and she's going to get a job at the faktry. The message is clear - Working class people, know your place.

It would have been really refreshing to have followed Summer at Uni - it's a part of life for many people (especially parents struggling with "empty nest" syndrome, only to have them come home with armfuls of laudry every 2 weeks!) and one that soaps have never properly explored.

Soaps have a duty to inspire young people to achieve their full potential. It would be nice if just once an intelligent, ambitious young person could aspire to something a bit more. Bethany Platt got a top job at a magazine in That There London with no qualifications or experience whatsoever, while poor old Summer is stuck selling knickers...

Summer gets a job in the factory, what a surprise. Like we didn't all see that coming a mile off LOL. I was really hoping she would go away to school. I find her character incredibly annoying and would not miss her one bit if she left.

There are many ways to enter higher education. It's not simply a case of going off full time to another city which would be a convenient exit story. This is of course what would happen if the actress no longer wanted to play Summer, who might then have come back with another head. The storyline could have been Summer's not ready to move out so she goes to the local uni, or she does a part time uni and maybe part time in the factory. Or perhaps another route altogether - that a degree is only one form of higher education with Summer choosing an HND. Disappointing.

So many missed opportunities for Summer. A different university, local or not. Some other form of further education or job training scheme. Manchester is a big city - why can she only work in the Street?
That said, she drives me mad with her sulking, so please write her out.

From what I remember, Bethany got an internship for a few months. No mention of her being taken on permanently.

Summer is the daughter of an archdeacon. They are literally the most middle-class family in the programme, by occupation as much as education.
