Mary's declaration, 'The game is poised like a rock teetering on a ledge in a Warner Brother's cartoon,'could be a comment with a much broader meaning, considering the happenings on The Street tonight. In fact the only chink of light was brought to us via Mary and Roy. That said, the effect on Roy and Hayley's marriage is somewhat worrying. As Hayley left to dance, with a caution from Mary to mind Norris's bunions, she bent down to kiss Roy, who almost leapt out of his seat. So what is going on with Roy and Mary? There's no doubt they share a rapport, as acknowledged by Roy himself. The highlight of the 'Maryisms' tonight was her success in picking up an old-timer in the PDSA charity shop. A wonderful pun! A chess clock is of course what she means, but an old-timer is a phrase not heard in a while, for an elderly gentleman. Flirtatious? Absolutely, in Mary World.
Just a little more on Mary warrants comment and that is her bringing her diary into Roy's Rolls and finding that, after checking of course, tonight 'looks clear'.And then, 'For now I'll take a muffin.' It's the 'for now' bit that seemed so suggestive of more to come on Planet Mary. On Hayley's return, Mary tells her that she, Mary, has mated her husband twice.
Peter seems to be going for meltdown, arguing irrationally with even those who love him, namely Ken and Carla, both of these deserving of our sympathy; Carla because of the dreadful conference call interruption and Ken who had all his past crimes revisited upon him. Along with Ken there is no parent in the world who doesn't feel some degree of guilt in their child rearing efforts. Peter was amusing though, in a black humour sort of way, when he said on Nick's arrival in the bistro, 'Oh here he is, 'Willy Wonka, the Pied Piper, Sir Child-Catcher.'
Gail is suffering too, though she is profoundly irritating. Did she not realise that Leanne, who, moments ago had asked Gail for a break, was right there when Gail was pointing out to Nick how wrong it would be to pack up and leave Weatherfield.'for the sake of some woman'.
Owen's distress at Izzy's pregnancy brought an amusing line from Anna calling him the sage of Weatherfield. Then the discovery of Faye's trainers in the bin and then Izzy, before her father's opinion was made known to her about her pregnancy, was getting close to the problems Faye was suffering when she asked, 'Do you get on with the girls in your class?'
And then Carla's brother bursts in fresh from his prison cell, mid angry words between Carla and Peter . Oddly Carla tells Rob to put Peter down but Peter wasn't up...
A great double episode tonight. Eva and Rob? Just a thought...

Frankly, I thought that "I'll take a muffin" was a good deal more suggestive than "For now".
As usual tenants move out without a moments notice and people buying a house move in immediately with no wait for exchange or completion. Steve doesnt seem to give a fig about his daughter - seems more interested in pulling faces with Lloyd and comedic scenes with Beth are now missed because the character that should have been written out months ago Kevin Webster wants to move in. Scratches head in disbelief.
If the writer's are going to even suggest that Roy has a fling with Mary I will laugh..he almost topped himself when he 'thought' he had cheated on Haley with the vile Tracy a few years ago and thought he was Amy's father so going down that road will turn more viewers off this program. Roy needs to stay as he is. Mary..she can go anytime..ad's ziltch to the show IMO except annoyance. If she is the murderous psycho that some seem to think she is, they sure are taking a long time bringing this out into the open.
Roy will never cheat on Hayley with Mary and I'd love to see Sylvia giving Mary a good seeing to, giving her the short shrift right out the door.
I can't see Roy ever being unfaithful, but I do welcome the move to make Mary more three-dimensional. She produces the odd zinger one-liner, but her inate spitefulness prevents her being likeable - but fleshing out her past is a way to make her more believeable. After all, Norris is usually a pretty spiteful little weasel (although he's been rather pleasant over the last few weeks) but we can still enjoy his antics because he feels three-dimentional. Mary, up till now, never has.
I think Mary is a wonderful character in Coronation Street, and I love her scenes with Norris. Along with Norris and Mary I also love Sylvia and Emily and there have been some very humerous storylines involving them. I would like to see them on screen a lot more.
