Inside Soap magazine celebrates 20th birthday

This week, Inside Soap magazine celebrates its 20th birthday. That's quite a milestone. It's also quite a magazine! Running a Coronation Street fan website, I take an active interest in the soaps mags and, without wishing to sound like an advert or anything, Inside Soap magazine is the only one I ever buy because it's the only one that's ever got anything worthwhile to read in it.

The birthday edition of Inside Soap magazine is out in the shops tomorrow - Tuesday 26 June - with a 24 page soaps supplement.  You can see Anne Kirkbride (Deirdre Barlow) looks excited about it already.

Inside Soap editor Steven Murphy blogs about the birthday celebrations here.

Soap fans vote Coronation Street most realistic

It's Inside Soap magazine's 20th birthday this week and they recently commissioned a survey asking soap fans what they think of their favourite shows.

The results came in as follows, with most soap fans saying they want to see more humour, rather than grim storylines, in their favourite shows. Can't argue with that!

Four-fifths of viewers believe there should be more funny moments in the plots of the series, according to the poll.

More than a third - 36% - said they wanted to see fewer stories about affairs in TV soaps, and 30% said they would prefer to see less emphasis on "murder and mayhem" in the shows - although a quarter said they actually wanted to see more.

Just over two-fifths (42%) said the shows rarely or never reflected their own lives, and just 18% said a portrayal of a real-life issue in a soap had actually helped them.

Soap fans said Coronation Street was the soap which most accurately reflected reality, chosen by 40% of the sample of 1,000 people. EastEnders was second, chosen by 30%, while Emmerdale came third on 19%.
Emmerdale was chosen as the fictional location where viewers would most like to live, with Walford's Albert Square runner-up.

Inside Soap magazine editor Steven Murphy said: "It's interesting to see how Britons continue to love soaps and their family values, as well as the escapism it provides them with."

Inside Soap chats with Phil Collinson

This week's Inside Soap has a chat with the Coronation Street producer, Phil Collinson, who reveals why some decisions were made and gives hints toward the future.

The Rovers - Phil says that Steve will be the owner of the Rovers for the forseeable, but there will be a new licensee, but it's not Claudia, so who is it?

On the Lewis/Audrey storyline - Phil reveals that Emmerdale and Coronation Street writers discuss storylines and one show sometimes has to drop storylines to avoid similarities, but the Lewis and Audrey storyline was deemed to be different enough from Diane Sugden's storyline with conman Charlie to go-ahead.

On Owen - Phil says that Owen won't be an out and out bad guy, and he's soon to embark on a romance with a certain character.

On the fourth death - Phil says the reason for lying about fourth main character death was to build suspense (and in my opinon, it worked) so that we were left thinking either Rita or Peter were dead.

On Dr. Carter - Matt will feature as a main part of Fiz and John's story later this year, so were going to be seeing a lot more of him.

On the Royal Wedding - Phil said the Street will be celebrating the upcoming event on screen!

Roy Cropper's relative to turn up next year

In this week's Inside Soap magazine, Coronation Street producer Phil Collinson reveals that a relative of Roy's will turn up next year.  He says: "Early next year we might well bring in a relative of Roy but I don't want to reveal more than that right now. It'll be someone who really puts the cat among the pigeons for him and Hayley."

He also reveals some upcoming Corrie spoilers and says this of Jason and Rosie: "We can also expect major things of Jay-Ro. I think they have all the makings of a classic Corrie couple. Jason is Mr Gay Weatherfield  and Rosie is the local glamour puss. They'll be together for the foreseeable future."  Am I the only one to groan at this?

And it looks like Dev and Sunita won't be getting killed off in the tram crash as the article says that the Alahans (note the plural) will have to pick up the pieces after the corner shop is obliterated in the crash.

Other snippets include Gail being mortified at Tracy's return (won't we all?); Tracy and Becky will fight for Steve and Amy (yawn); a shock development will force David to reassess his life (epilepsy?); testing times will unite Izzy and Gary (this one I like!) and Carla and Michelle rule the factory with a rod of iron (this one I don't like!).

Brian Tilsley says No Jail for Gail

The wonderful Inside Soap magazine have launched a No Jail for Gail campaign. Not only is there a t-shirt, but they've taken the campaign to Downing Street.

You can join in the fun on facebook at http://www.facebook.com/nojailforgail where there's pictures of celebrities joining in the fun and wearing the t-shirt. Here's Paul O'Grady, a huge Coronation Street fan. But the picture I would have loved to have shown you on the blog doesn't seem to be on the website although it is in this week's magazine. It's Brian Tilsley, aka actor Chris Quentin, wearing the No Jail for Gail t-shirt! Now, that's class.

Blog Exclusive! Inside Soap reveals all

I've been blogging about Coronation Street since 2007 and in all that time, Inside Soap magazine has proved to be the best soaps mag you can buy. It's got interviews, spoilers, pictures, the works. And now, we've been lucky enough to have an exclusive interview with Mr Inside Soap himself - the editor, Steven Murphy!

Q: How long have you been editor at Inside Soap and when did the magazine begin?
I've been editor here for over nine years now. Blimey, that's a long time! But I did my first work on the mag as a freelance writer back in 1996. The magazine began in 1992 as a monthly, then it went fortnightly in 1996. I took it weekly in 2003, which was a really scary time!, and luckily it paid off. I think that's it now. I don't see a daily Inside Soap any time soon!

Q: How, why and when did your interest in soaps begin?
Well, my mum is a soap viewer. My brother is actually named after a Crossroads character she liked, and no, he's not called Benny! So the shows were always on in the house. Also, I was brought up in South West Scotland where it rains a lot. An awful lot. So as a kid, I was sat in watching a lot of telly! I began working in magazines after I left Uni, and always did entertainment stuff, but slowly soap became my specialist area.

Q: What do you enjoy most about your job as Inside Soap editor?
All of it! It's great to work in a subject area you love. I love the process of making a magazine, coming up with the ideas and working with my great team. Plus the fact at the end of every week you get a present, a brand-new issue of Inside Soap. And, of course, I get to know the soap plots before other people!

Q: Why do you think soaps have such an international, lasting appeal?
I think it's human nature to want to look into other people's lives. Let's face it, anyone who says they're not nosey and don't like a gossip is basically a liar! I think we enjoy the fact we can associate with a lot of the characters' dilemmas, and see a bit of ourselves or people we know in the characters. Plus, soaps are something that you can talk to anyone (well, almost anyone) about. It's something we all have in common. We all want to know when Tony will get his comeuppance or want to talk about what a bitch Rosie is. And I also think, especially with UK soaps, it's because they are really, really good drama. Some people look down on them, but they are probably the kind of people who look down on anything that's popular.

Q: Who are your top three favourite soap characters of all time either in the UK or abroad?
Oh. That's a hard question. JR Ewing, I'm a big Dallas fan and I think Larry Hagman's portrayal of him is a work of sheer genius. Sharon Watts. I love a tragic heroine, and Sharon the the ultimate of those. I wish she'd come back to Walford. And then Steve McDonald. I think he's one of the most realistic portrayals of modern man ever. Steve is just so real. He's basically a bit rubbish at everything and a huge coward, like most men.

Q: Thinking of Corrie in particular now, what do you think is its enduring appeal?
I think the richness of the characters, and the fantastic dialogue. It can be just as entertaining when the plot is about an argument over who owns a bit of cheese as it can be when there's a serial killer stalking the cobbles and that's because we love and believe in the characters so much, and because the writing is so good. I also think it's to do with its history. It has such a solid foundation with families like the Barlows, the McDonalds and the Websters that no matter how many changes the show goes through and it has gone through a lot over the years, it always seems familiar. Whereas other soaps have been through so many set-ups and cast changes that sometimes the viewer feels like it's a completely different show.

Q: What's been your favourite Corrie storylines over the years?
Oh, so many. I love anything with the Barlows. Most recently I really loved the Ken and Martha storyline. I thought it was beautifully written and wonderfully played. Going back, Richard Hillman was obviously unmissable and I loved Kevin's affair with Natalie because it was the first time he or Sally had cheated I just thought it had a real impact, the catfight between the two women was brilliant.

Q: Who are your all-time favourite male and female Corrie characters and why?
Male, as I said, I love Steve McDonald. I also am really fond of Roy. Female, there's so many, but my all-time favourite is Deirdre. I just adore her.

Q: In your job you get to meet and interview many soap actors, but which ones from Corrie have you never met that you'd really like to? Anne Kirkbride I've never met. When I do my life would be complete! I'd really love to have a chat with Barbara Knox (Rita) and Eileen Derbyshire (Emily) as they never do any interviews, and they must have so many stories from over the years.

Q: Are there any snippets you'd like to share about the ones you've met?
Well, one well-known actress did once do the splits in my hotel room! But I promised I'd never tell. And I did once beat Andy Whyment (Kirk) and Sam Aston (Chesney) at tennis when they were filming the South Africa DVD, although they then beat me for about the next five games!

Q: Are there any of the classic Corrie actors from the 1960s onwards who are no longer with us that you would have loved to have met?
Well, I think everone would love to meet the women behind Ena Sharples and Annie Walker, as those characters were such legends.

Q: Can you tease readers with any plans that Inside Soap might have to celebrate Corrie's 50th next year?
Well, we're just starting to think about it now, but there will be some very special treats for Corrie fans, I promise.

Q: And finally, do you know any Corrie spoilers you can tease us with, or is it more than your job's worth?! ;-)
It is more than my job's worth, there are some very scary people in the Corrie press office who will come and knock me round the head if I say too much! But I have just read the storylines for January, and there's a couple of shock love splits on the cards. But other than that, my lips are sealed!

With thanks to Steven Murphy and all the lovely people at Inside Soap Magazine. Visit their website here.

Coronation Street Spoiler: Rosie Webster to be a glamour model

Inside Soap have done a great job on their 2009 Soaps Review which you can buy in the shops now for £2.70. It's full of Corrie catch-ups from over the last 12 months and they reveal a few spoilers too. One spoiler which we haven't seen anywhere else is that Rosie Webster is going to become a glamour model.

"Having enjoyed a taste of what it's like to have money, Rosie realises the world of business isn't for her and she decides her looks and figure are her fortune," says a Corrie mole. Sounds to me like an excuse to show more scenes of Rosie in her frillies.

News in from Inside Soap magazine is that Kevin and Molly's affair will be uncovered by someone close to them both. But who could it be? All I can tell you is that mag also says "a lady" discovers their secret. My money's on Aunty Pam. What do you reckon?

Then as Kevin and Molly's relationship grows, Kevin wants to keep their fling a closely guarded secret but Molly takes a more relaxed attitude to it all. The hussy!

When Ramsay Clegg pops his clogs, Norris will go through his brother's belongings and gets a new perspective on his troubled family and starts to regret his harsh treatment of Ramsay. Ooh, what'll he find?

And guess what day Tony Gordon proposes to Maria...? Only on the anniversary of Liam's death! Maria and Tony pledge their love for each other at Liam's graveside and Tony offers to adopt baby Liam.

Corrie characters come top in Soap Poll

The fab Inside Soap magazine has been running a Best Of soap poll for the last few weeks and the results have been counted and printed today in the mag.

Tracy Barlow was voted Best Soap Bitch.
Bet Lynch was voted Best Soap Landlady.
Richard Hillman was voted Best Soap Villain.
And the Greatest Ever Comic Character goes to the one and only Blanche Hunt.

Maggie Jones, who plays Coronation Street's Blanche, told Inside Soap about playing Blanche: "It's like putting on your best hat and going out. I love it." And so do we.

To see the full line-up from the poll, have a look at Digital Spy.

Tony Gordon moves in with Maria

In this week's Inside Soap magazine there's all kinds of fab spoilers. Not only do Fiz and Sally come to blows over John Stape (again) but the creepy killer storyline just keeps on getting worse. Tony Gordon is going to move in with Maria Connor after a false alarm sends Maria to th'ospickle.

And so when Tony moves in with Maria, the scene will be perfectly set for Carla Gordon's return. I think it'll be fair to say that Carla will not be best pleased.
