The flat is dark, deathly dark. The only light comes from the flickering of a television, its colours bouncing off the face of a figure in a chair. Her hair is wild. Her clothes are ragged. In her hand is a bottle. She speaks.
"BAAAAAHHHHH!"
It's Friday the 20th of March 2015, it's gone 7:30, and ITV is on. The girl shakes her head again. She murmurs something, quietly, under her breath. So hard to hear. She repeats it, again and again, getting louder each time, until finally we can make out the words. Slurred through a drunken mouth.
"Shhhhould've been meeeee!"
The phone rings and with one shaky hand she brings the receiver to her face.
"Yeah? Of course I'm watching it. What else have I got to do? Are you watching it?... Both of you?... Well, she always was the more emotional one. Hang on."
She pauses for a long rackety cough.
"I'm back. Yeah. Look at her. Look. At. Her. All blonde hair and lips. I could've done that."
She takes a swig from the Jagermeister bottle.
"Of course I'm drinking! I'm allowed to, aren't I? I'm old enough. Everyone knows I am now. Everyone."
The last word was almost sobbed, but the moment of emotion is crushed.
"Ah, stop your whining. At least you got to be on TV. At least you got seven years of employment out of it. Pay packets and exposure. I got none of that."
The scene changes, and the woman in the chair lets out a cackle of a laugh. "Look at that jacket! Look at it! I wouldn't have worn that. I've got more class. Some people will do anything to be on tv... what? I told you, that wasn't me, that was my agent."
A burp.
"Sitting there in a pub. The character's fourteen, love! You shouldn't be there! Pretending to be a different age. No class... I told you, that was my agent."
A venerable actress appears onscreen, and the girl in the chair lets out a furious cry.
"HER! THAT ONE! All keen for the publicity shots then I'm out on my ear. No word. Not even a text...
"...what? I suppose. All those years you worked with her and she doesn't phone any more. Very good at acting like a grandmother, no good at being one. Does it all the time. When the kid gets too old or too ugly or too much trouble, out you go, in with a new head, and she never looks back. Cruel."
She takes another drink, but it is empty. With a listless arm she throws the glass bottle towards the tv. It catches on the corner, breaks, the shards disappearing into the darkness.
"I'll be alright," she says to the concerned voice down the phone. "You will too. All of us. Got to stick together, all us rejects. Should phone the Tracys. Have a get together. Few shots... well, can't you get a fake ID? I know a bloke. I'll put you onto him. Yeah."
She slams down the phone, her eyes no longer focusing on the television. She's falling into a doze. As she slips away, she sings along to the brassy theme tune through half-open lips, quietly, winding down.

While we're being convoluted about Bethany, I wonder, were either of the Walton sisters, Emily and Amy, who played her for the 1st few years of her life, or for that matter, Mia Cookson, who played her from birth, for a few months, offered the part for this new incarnation?
No wonder the current character is so messed up. With all that's happened in her short life, she should have been in some serious therapy, to sort it all out, since there was no way her young, ill-equipped mother could deal with the ramifications of all those traumas!
I was so sorry that Dame Judi was too busy to play Bethany. I wonder if they tried Dame Maggie.
What an awesome and hilarious piece of writing. Really enjoyed reading it, quality right up there with Fat Brenda and our dear Emma Hynes.
& The pictures couldn't be more perfect.
Nicely done~
Superb!!!!
Cried laughing.
Knew before I reached the end who the writer had to be. Awesome as ever:)
