British tabloid journalism has had a very hard time of it in recent years. There's been entire Parliamentary committees devoted to finding out if they're dodgy or not. They've been called venal, cruel, vindictive, liars, and sometimes, just plain stupid.
It's pleasing to report that the Daily Star has bucked this trend with today's truly revelatory front page headline.
Thank you Daily Star. It's absolutely new information that Charlie Condou (Marcus Dent) has two children. I mean, one was born four years ago and one was born two years ago, but I understand you've probably been busy following the antics of "Big Bro": after all, no-one else in the UK is watching it. You also probably missed his column about his family in the Guardian, which ran until 2012 and can be read in its entirety here, because, you know, it was in the Guardian, and you tend to avoid that paper. They use some very big words.
You probably also missed tweets like this from Mr Condou himself:
Or this:
Or even failed to read his Twitter bio:
but I know this "journalism" lark is difficult. You have to use a keyboard and stuff. You have hundreds of words to bash out, pages to fill, captions to write under pictures of girls in bikinis bending over and upskirt pics of barely out of their teens starlets. Research takes time and you can't possibly use something like, I don't know, Google, where autocomplete offers up:
This kind of in-depth investigative work is just too difficult for you. You can't let it get in the way of informing us, the Great British Public, the absolutely vital information that "ACTOR HAS FUNCTIONING TESTICLES". Now THAT'S front page stuff.
Kudos to you, Daily Star. Kudos.

Thanks, Scott, I needed a good laugh!
Lol! Good one! Just because you're gay doesn't mean you can't have kids.
Lol. Thanks for the laugh. Well written:)
Well said Scott, unfortunately the Daily Star will never read it, if they were in the habit of reading the Coronation Street Blog, they would have known about Charlie's kids a long time ago!
Good heavens, now they'll expand on this "riveting news" by telling us the children were born by a WOMAN. A woman to whom he's not married, even! Then they'll probably speculate that that Charlie "isn't really gay" and has been "having an affair" with the mother of his children! Good Lord, spare us all.
Wonderful stuff
Brilliant Scott. The Daily Star's universe is very, very small. In fact as small as a dreary 'reality' house in Elstree . . .
The Star is ridiculed everywhere for its ludicrous headlines. However, so a gay man has a couple of kids - so flippin what? In these days of IVF and artificial insemination its hardly big news.
This is excellent. Well said.
The piece above was well-written and funny, although it also angered me because I have spent the last 28 years fighting the media - all of it, not just the tabloids - in my job as a government press officer!
I did learn something from all this, however. Not that it matters one jot, but I didn't know Condou was gay. I thought he was only playing a gay character in Corrie!
Just one other thing while I'm on - the scandalous Mail comment piece about Chris Fountain said Condou and Antony Cotton don't get on. I don't know if that's true, although we do know Cotton has a short fuse - I'm A Celebrity and his demeanour when on ITV after Betty Driver died - AND how Condou said he didn't watch ANY of Cotton in I'm A Celebrity, which surprised me at the time, but I can see how that might be now.
Wonderful blog post Scott. I know that pointing out the failings of The Star is like shooting fish in a barrel but that doesn't mean it isn't fun.
I'm lost for words. Did the Daily Star really think this is new? We've all known Charlie Condou is a father.
I give up.
(Great blog post btw)
I did notice that "Charlie Condou Richard Armitage" was one of the Google auto complete results.. some heated fan-fic perhaps ;)

Charlie's response to this 'news' has been very entertaining on twitter.
This article is suitably scathing.

Beauty! At first I was naively prepared to believe it. Hysterically written. Made my day.
